Saltwater just needs more maintenance. That 45 Honda was probably owned by someone who did not understand how important it is to flush it out after use and/ or seasonal storage. Ive owned many motors 20+ years old in salt and they have minty mint waterjackets.

He unscrewed the lower unit drain plug and allowed it to leak to check to see if there was water in the oil, then he removed the spark plugs to do a compression test. those are not even parts to the motor lol. One is a wear item and the other is a drain plug.
@br549times35 жыл бұрын
@@gamesofcontent - the lower unit drain plug was to check the oil quality from the lower unit and to make sure it was sealed and not full of water. The spark plug, he removed to do the compression test. Both of those would be valid things to check. However, kind of unrealistic. You go to a private individual to look at their motor. You let some gear oil out? I mean yeah, if the seller is ok with that.
@P61guy615 жыл бұрын
Yes. So they don’t swindle you by selling an engine to you that they know has problems.
@bruktmoped5 жыл бұрын
You would of course check if the owner is ok with you doing these tests, maybe even before you come to look at it. If they dont like it, just walk away, they clearly know about issues with the engine.

@2fast4you256 жыл бұрын
A few mistakes in this video, to check compression you need to fully open up throtle. Second you need to know what kind of compression that particular engine your buying works with. Having same or similar compression on cilinders do not tell you that engine is good or in good shape. If that engine works with 160 psi and you have both cilenders at 135 psi....well that engine is no good. Also need to hear an engine run, a non running engine wont give you an idea how is the engine. If the guy salling it wont run it dont buy it. If you run it you will find out lots of things, if impeller is good, if crank & bearings make any noise, you also need to check if gears are good etc etc.
@RonMillbrae4 жыл бұрын
You don't need to open up the throttle to a test on a 2 stroke. Look it up. The compression is amazing. Most 2 strokes have compression around 120-140. No more

Great video. Very helpful and informative. I intend to get a boat and use it in saltwater. What can I do to prevent the salt buildup you showed? Is there a special way to flush it? How long should I flush? Flush with anything special, or just freshwater? Thanks for all you do for the boating community.
@jimwoods95512 жыл бұрын
Flushing doesn't work, even with chemicals. Pull off the cylinder head (2stroke) or a water passage cover from time to time to assess how much salt is building. The larger the motor, the more critical inspection becomes.

Have u ever de scaled the cooling system? Basically the run a special solution through the cooling ports and the entire system. This solution is like a clr or something that just dissolves salt and mineral deposits. They let this stuff run for hours using a pump. It eats away all this buildup inside the motor. At the end you can see all the crap that comes out. Very impressive. Yamaha dealer did mine. Made a big difference. There are many KZbin videos on this subject.

Please don’t use music when you’re speaking. I imagine most of your target audience does not care for music on their videos anyways. Your music is always super loud compared to your voice. So even when it’s not playing when you’re talking and you go to an outro with music, I have to turn the video off because it almost busts my eardrums. I watch at work with earbuds and I have the audio high so I can hear your words clearly - the music comes in 10x higher than your voice and that is painful.

Great video. Interesting about differences you read in workshop manuals. Mine says compression evenness is more important that the usual PSI. They also quote 20 PSI as the max diff between cylinders vs your 10 PSI. But obviously the less diff the better. Other point I read was the importance of earthing the leads when testing compression. If you don't it says it can damage your ignition system. I'm also an offender there.
@ct17627 жыл бұрын
grounding leads wont do crap. wont hard electronics at all. compression should be no more than 15psi variance. 20 is usually too much indicating a worn/stuck ring and/or scored cyl walls or blow head gasket. pop the heads off and have a peek just to be sure!
