After 9 years of use on my Ranger I've replaced two of these in the past year. Any idea why they're now going bad?

I got a plug color is Gray and blue wire's can't find where it plugs in but won't start now it is the wires in front of the coil packs where does it plug in

I have a vertical plug. Bought 2 different ones that were horizontal. Truck wont even start .. so I'm sure that's why.. thanks

what if your ford explorer cranks when it is hot and dry and sunny outside but will not crank when it rains. could the coil pack be bad?

not a mechanic but from what ive read that means your coil pack is cracked and when its wet around the spark has something to jump to through the crack

Kevin honey : More than likely, you have a problem with the starter solenoid and/or starter motor. First, the weather conditions you mention. When dry, you start. When wet, you do not. These are the facts. Therefore, water is more than likely shorting out the starting circuit, which includes the starter solenoid and motor. However, your crank and/or cam sensors can cause a no-start condition, along with your fuel pump or circuitry not functioning properly. Recommendation: Get a Haynes Manual for $30, as it contains a list of problems and causes that can cause those problems. Go from there, and remember: You need four things to make a vehicle work: 1) Air; 2) Fuel; 3) Spark; 4) Timing. Any one of those things, or the lack thereof, can cause a vehicle to not run properly. i do believe mine was a horizontal coil then when i bought a new one i got a vertical one and it worked just fine. I wonder why that is.

Those Ford coils fire on two cylinders at one time. In your case 1-5, 2-6 and 3-4. The easiest way to test it is 95% of the time one goes bad it's on the secondary coil. Unplug everything and measure the resistance between 1-5, 2-6 and 3-4. Set your ohm meter up on 20k. Normal is 11K to 17K. All readings should be close to each other. You can check the primary also which is done on the plug in. Put meter on lowest ohm setting. Left to right pin 1 and 2, pin 1 and 3, pin 1 and 4 should be 3 to 7 ohms. They correspond with the cylinder pairings. Your case pin 2 is cylinders 3-4 on the tower plugins. Pin 3 is 2-6 and pin 4 is 1-5. In your case you would have had a bad reading on the back two towers or pin 1-2.
