I started my career few months ago also. No military or law enforcement experience and everday is new. Whether it's your first fight you break up or whether it's your first major contraband you find during any type of search. To keep fighting everyday to stay is hard, the shift drains the day out of you. But to keep motivated and to prideful in your job over sees that drain. Thank you for posting this

You must be able to think on your feet and react to many different emergency situations. A correctional officer must be willing to serve and protect not only the community but fellow officers, other prison staff and yes the inmates as well. One minute a correctional officer may be a first responder dealing with a medical emergency and the next minute a fire fighter putting out a fire in a cell or dorm. A correctional officer wears many hats and is trained in many areas. One of the most important traits in my book is be honest, loyal and trustworthy while watching your fellow officers back at all times and everything else will fall into place. Be willing to listen and learn and do not pretend to already know everything. We never stop learning.

@@cacoca79 Why bring that trash talk to this channel? Tier Talk is attempting to educate officers to do the right thing while out there. They don't advocate treating inmates as sub-human, or aggrandize any inmate abuses. Inmates don't need us??? Tell the suicidal inmate who is bleeding out because he/she thought of a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Tell the gang banger who gets jumped by a rival gang. How about when an inmate get's news that their mother, daughter, son, etc. got killed on the street and they don't have phone time to even call home. Go to some other channel and leave your gangster comments. With that attitude, I am sure that you will thank a correctional officer sooner rather than later.

Honestly I would stay in Corrections if it weren't for the ambition of being on a SWAT team or SRT whatever your variation, I would rather stay Behind the Walls then on patrol because there's more action and I can help more people and make it a better difference prison inmates then random people I come across on calls. I working at jail that we do not have CERT team because we are qualified to do what's needed of that & the Shakedown or extraction and have deputies that can respond if possible lethal force is needed but even if I moved somewhere for prison and eventually got on with CERT I was just rather do it on the streets making arrest / emergency response. In that case I would be moving up in law enforcement but simply going to the police academy and we coming up a control police officer is not advancement it's just expanding

I'm a Juvenile Correctional Officer and have been for about 4 years now. I learned so far that you have to be fair, firm, and consistent. I work with a Juvenile population that already has their sentences and are awaiting transport to the different facilities around the state. I'm 4 years in now, and the Juveniles tell me they can't read me if they wanted to. Ironically, myself and a few other officers don't run into too many behavioral issues with the juveniles. However, I do let them know that if they make bad decisions, there are consequences to the choices they makes. Completele lockdown. Ironically, complete lockdowns comes in waves. When it's a good day, it's a good day. However, when it's a bad day, IT'S A REALLY BAD DAY. I decompress from my job by going to the gym, or just enjoying a multitude of outdoor activities. I'm 4 years in, and one thing I've noticed is the juveniles only use my last name if and when i piss them off by asking them to follow directions. More times than not, I'm met with expletives left and right. It's crazy how the day shifts from one moment to the next. I don't yell, or raise my voice and they tell me I'm a weirdo because of it. Oh well, yelling only begets more yelling and absolutely nothing gets accomplished.

"A lot of people look down on Corrections." Try being in JUVENILE corrections. Holy crap, I wish I had a nickel for every time I've been called a babysitter- I'd retire! Babysitters don't deal with rapists, drug dealers, armed robbers, and murderers...

Budget Guns and Gear Reviews Juvenile yards are gladiator schools. Everyone has something to prove. When you go to a big boy yard,people just want to do their time with as little drama as possible. You don’t want to be the reason the yard gets shut down or privileges get taken away. You will catch a hot one faster than a cheetah on cocaine.

I just started my career as a Correctional Officer in a Max facility. I've seen and done so much in my first day of training it was mind-boggling. I've got to transport a recent active shooter. At first it was awkward. I have one of the best FTO's you could ask for. He's been on the job for seventeen years and comes HIGHLY recommended. Keep doing what you're doing with your series. I find this VERY helpful. I give everyone in this field much respect and praise for keeping the inner walls safe. I hope to be a part of this large but "small" community for a long time to come. Peace to my brothers and sisters in law enforcement!

My advice, every officer has their own way, do not fight that. Do not try to be someone else, inmates have nothing but time, and they will see your facade clear as day. It takes time to find your own unique way of handling things, and when you do find it stay consistent. And have a sense of humor, we are locked in with convicted felons the entire time we work, it is a very negative environment as it is, find a way to bring some laughter into it, trust me, it helps a lot. Have a safe shift.

It also takes a very strong and unassailable deeply ingrained sense of integrity. In my honest opinion all of the attributes that we look at as a profession integrity is wound through all of them. In those moments where we as officers and supervisors are put to the test. It mostly happens when you are alone, with little oversight or backup to lend you the strength. In these moments your integrity is the inner voice that tells you that something is wrong, something is off. I strive to pass this on to all of my new officers and seasoned veterans. The offenders are always watching and will prey on us in that moment of perceived weakness. Your integrity is what sees you through those moments, that all of us have had and will continue to experience at differing times through out our careers.

The biggest trait to me, it the oath you take to the county, state, federal government of your facility. If that oath is violated, it effects ALL of us. You have to realize you protect the public, your fellow officers/staff, and then the inmates. You have to fight for each equally. THAT is the toughest part. Many (and I have worked with a few) have a mind block that certain inmates don't deserve protection. The ability to toss that block aside is the hardest, but the most mandatory.
@TierTalk
@TierTalk 7 жыл бұрын

The CO has to be a jack of all trades, an authority figure, a team player, but also able to be strong in themselves. You are a para everything., legal, teacher, Councillor of drugs, family issues, relationships. The CO is the answer to every question or doubt the inmate has. For example "what is my chance of getting parole?", "can you check the spelling and grammar on this assignment?", "My girlfriend is doing this, what do I do?", etc. The CO is the complaint person for everything, medication, food, canteen, and have to be able to answer those questions or know where to get the answer. The CO has to be capable of approaching issues from many points, as all inmates are different so different approaches need to be made to try and avoid force. The CO will have to use force, even when they are loath to do so. Its the only job apart from the military where your co-workers will come in for an OT they don't want so you can have some vacation time. A place where co-workers will work unwanted OT so you wont be short staffed. When I started the Jail I was at held about 725 inmates, and we had a night shift of 10 including the control officer. Its a job where you need supreme confidence in your abilities and have and use those skills each and every shift. The CO is on duty the whole time they are at work, even on break they are expected to respond, and do. The job is always potentially deadly, and also highly political, so you can end up in a tight corner very quickly either with the organization or the inmates. I never pursued a promotion that would take me off the floor. The administration was very bad, but I loved working the floor. There is not even a participation award for corrections, we are the poor cousins of law enforcement, and always the ones who get blamed for any issues in the justice system. The media loves to tell a story about a bad event in a prison, even when the staff are completely bound by policy and procedure. A good CO is respected by the inmates, and every staff and inmate knows who is respected and who isnt. They have names for each of us, from down right rude to almost liking. Inmates don't have many people in their world they can count on to tell them the truth, and COs are usually in that group. We are some of the best people they know. there is much more to it and the man says, almost too much to explain. We are even more to the inmate than parents are to their children and think about explaining that role. Stay safe and watch your back

I think what we are going through will soon pass. Politics have destroyed how we are seen but I do expect the truth to surface. That is one of the reasons I do what I do. I will tell you this…for those who are in law enforcement at this time…it maybe tough…but the fight reinforces our dedication in being a part of this great profession.

How do corrections react in a situation where facies is thrown into there face? Do they just go and wash it off or is there a certain treatment for when this occurs?
@TierTalk
@TierTalk Жыл бұрын
They will be sent out to medical for evaluation. There will be a request for the inmates medical records to make sure that we can assist staff with what’s needed. But yes, they will have to go through a series of treatments to ensure they didn’t catch any communicable diseases.

A person who works corrections, in any capacity, has to be understanding. But, not to understanding to the point of being gullible. Or to believe everything someone says. In my experience, communication and boundaries are of the upmost, and paramount importance. Speaking as a CO in a nys county jail. But still, all the same. My GF is a co at a nys shock incarnation facility also. LOVE BEING AN OFFICER. To protect and serve brother.

Finding people with the traits everyone else here has listed is very important. In our PTO training program, I try to also get a feel for their mindset and their comprehension of the idea that thank you s will be few and far between. But ass chewing may be regular. Or that your skin needs to be extremely thick. Or that this job will pay your bills, feed and support your family, but will not give you a summer home with a 200 mph Ferrari in the garage. If we feel they have those traits and this mindset (working for the greater good, as you say) then we go forward with our training.

It’s tough. It seems to be a trend. Staffing is low and inmates are being let out. The key Hansel is to reach out to someone from New York State and ask them what their thoughts maybe. If you are on Facebook, I can post your question on my profile page to see if anyone can help

I Wish I knew someone to reach out to that was actively working. I only know of two officers at Rikers that tell me it’s a mad house. No structure and could you believe some of the doors are not securing properly. I’m taking an exam at the end of the month for Baltimore county police. Let’s see how quickly I get an opportunity presented to me. I’ve head their is a better structure being in forced by the new chief. Fingers crossed….

I love your video first time watching just wanted to let you know that I am one of those sisters I have been injured on the job and I was considering not going back but there's something pulling me back because I believe in the correcting part of Corrections and there are some kids in there that were sold for drugs and they ended up like their parents and had no chance they had no chance and if I can tell then they're worth something I could change the world each officer could change the world for someone but I also do not let anyone come before my brothers and sisters in arms in Corrections I was considering not going back but I can't help it I have to, it's been 18 months to where I can walk again finally and I'm going back probably next month do you think I should?

Is a profession that gets no respect or credit. Most people think that prisoners are locked down and that the "guard" sits in a gaurded area playing security gaurd all day. It is the other way around these dudes convicted felons are walking around the offercers all day face to face, eye to eye and the officers do NOT carry guns in there. All you have is your verbal judo and interpersonal skills. Remember these inmates have different personalities so one size does not fit all inmates.
