The Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS) is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to treat complications of advanced liver disease, such as portal hypertension. During the procedure, a small shunt is placed within the liver to create a direct connection between the portal vein (which carries blood from the intestines to the liver) and a hepatic vein (which carries blood away from the liver).
