I personally sketch on gesso with a metalpoint (you can get a mechanical pencil lead sized silver, gold, or brass wire). It can't be erased, but since it gets covered with the paint it doesn't matter.

I’m surprised that your pencil didn’t work on the gesso, usually gesso adds a bit of tooth that helps pencil grip. Or at least it works for colored pencils. Maybe try a softer pencil, somewhere in the 3-4B range? Might go down easier. A pastel or charcoal pencil might work well too.

@@tirameowsu it's how we learn! You can also take a light sand paper and sand the surface of the dry clear gesso and get a very smooth surface for uses of acrylic paint, posca pens and such. Then you can scale out the size of your sketch on a piece of paper. put your sketching into Place go over it heavily with charcoal and press it onto said work surface to transfer the sketch. So many different ways to do it!

If it's difficult to sketch on I would suggest sanding or maybe doing thinner layers by mixing a little water and sanding in between those layers. Also clear gesso would have worked well so you could sketch first and then seal with gesso. Matte medium works the same as gesso but it's clear and less textured.

In the future you could sketch on the wood and either thin your gesso to be more transparent or use clear gesso so you can still see it. I’ve also found that regular graphite goes over gesso just fine.

Posca Pens are originally from Japan, and in Japan they are very cheap. If you want them cheap, the best option is buying them from a seller that brings them straight from Japan or courier services like Rakuten or Zenmarket. I'm not from the USA, so I don't know how expensive they can be in comparison, but, I swear, Japanese Amazon has so many cheaper alternatives. With Poscas, Copics, Holbein Watercolors, Tablets, my god, so much cheaper. The gesso works great for coating sketchbook paper that would be destroyed by the Poscas xD If you ever want to try painting on top of canvas with the poscas, that's a great option as well. I've seen other people sketching first and then adding a layer of a more transparent gesso on top, although, I've never seen that kind of gesso before, so I can say nothing about it. As a resin crafter, I suggest you go easy with the glitter if you are going to pour over a surface, because, depending on the glitter and other factors... GLITTERCANSINKANDRUINEVERYTHING. So just be carefull, experiment a little with silicone molds. I use to mix a small batch into a silicone mold, then paint on top of the cured resin and then add other layers on top as test pieces and it's really fun to do. Also...be careful with the lighter, you can accidentally burn the resin, and it would look soooo baaaad. I recommend this tutorial, if you want to learn more: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6C8l5p3qL2Gpdk

@@tirameowsu I have seen people even doing it with oil paints in sketchbooks, that's awesome 😂😂 you're welcome. I can't wait so see you try this one more time with larger pieces. Be careful with resin, you could get addicted to it 😂 is so much fun once you get the hang of it.

If you don't want the colour to bleed on wood you have to pass a cutter through the lines, this will cut the flow of the wood grain and it will help keep your colours separated
@TsukabuNosoratori24 жыл бұрын
You should try sandpapering the gesso after you put it down and it dries. I find an 80 grit fine sandpaper makes it a lot easier to draw on gessoed surfaces. I do love how these turned out! I don't have posca pens, but I do paint in acrylics so sandpapering makes the gesso less abrasive.

you could do UV resin! that way you could cure it super fast and not have to worry about cats and whatnot getting into it. and when it comes to mixing things equally, a scale (like a food scale) is super helpful. :) make sure you 'zero out' with the weight of the cup/container you are measuring with.
@tirameowsu4 жыл бұрын
I've tried UV resin before but the one I got never fully cured, it just stayed sticky. do you have a good brand recommendation for UV resin?
@joan_of_snark4 жыл бұрын
@@tirameowsu hm, I don't personally, but I'm assuming it didn't cure completely because you either didn't mix it well enough, the measurements were slightly off, or the layer was too thick (maybe it would work via several thinner layers and curing as you go?). Was the one you used a one-part resin or a two-part resin? could also have been humidity (though I've read mixed things about whether or not humidity can affect it) or perhaps the UV wasn't strong enough or used long enough. Someone also suggested wiping off the outer layer w/some alcohol to get rid of tackiness. Unfortunately when it comes to things like resins, epoxy, silicone, etc. is that they are all a tad finicky, and sometimes you can do everything right and things still don't always come out perfectly

Ahhh they all turned out so cute!! It's a bummer that the gesso makes it nearly impossible to do pencil sketching but maybe you can try simpler designs that don't necessarily need much planning/sketching? It's nice that posca markers are so opaque that even if you did mess up you could always go over it to fix it ;w; Also the resin effect looks AMAZING--I know next to nothing about resin so it was super cool to watch the process of applying it!
