First of all: thanks for this Dave. Tires are a HUGE topic and can be a difficult decision when you aren't sponsored. It took me 7 weeks to make a decision on my newest set. I wanted something comfortable for my family and myself with good road manners as well as being able to handle road hazards, off road duty and still look decent. Like the "in-betweener" Dave mentioned. I looked at Hercules terra trac TG, Milestar patagonia xt, kenda klever at2 and falken rubitrek along with a bunch of cheap ones like prinx, delinte, advanta and even considered spending an arm and a leg for some BFG, NITTO, etc...I decided to buy American and went with these Mastercraft courser trail HD tires that were made in Findlay, Ohio. I'm not telling anyone what to buy, but I will say if you have a dual purpose truck, the sidewall rating/bite and tread depth are phenomenal on these for the price range. I'm near 5,000 miles in on them, just rotated and zero signs of wear. They look good and ride dead SILENT. They shed water and grab hard on dirt so far. No squirm or squeal when pushed hard on the street around curves, when accelerating or braking. I have not had them in the rocks yet, but will soon just to test them some as this is my all-purpose rig and not my trail truck (trail truck is rocking Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ just bc I got a good deal on them I couldnt say no to and they had 5 in stock. they seem to work well too, but don't get many street miles at all). So I just wanted to share as another option everyone may not know about is all. They aren't the cheapest, but FAR from the most expensive and I personally feel like I got every bit of my hard earned moneys worth here.

I can't honestly say, most people don't need an mt tire. A good at tire would do everything they want it to. I had 2 sets of mts on my rodeo and I got soo little use out of them. Great video man.

Without a doubt, the worst tyre I have ever had, were BFG KO2s. If the tyres were cold, and the road was even damp, my truck would slide all over the road. Once the tyres warmed up, they were fine.

Great topic for a vid! Fwiw both bias ply and radial ply tires use a fabric cross section. Bias are laid across each other in an X all the way throughout the carcass from bead to bead, and radial ply is simply the same thing but the plies are laid straight across from bead to bead, radially. Where steel belts come in is underneath the tread pattern and they are laid circumferentially but not from inside bead to outside bead (or vice versa). Rarely are there any steel belts in the middle of the tire sidewall. There may be a metal loop contained with each tire bead, also running circumferentially through each. blah blah blah. Random thought. Correct me if I am wrong, for I am often! wrong, just never in doubt. Cheers.

I have a lifted tj on 33s. I went with BFG KO2s. My new set I went with 33/10.50/15. The previous set I had was 33/12.50/15 mile star Patagonia tires MT. The difference in weight and ride quality was night and day. If you need to hit the highway or cruise cement for a while before hitting the trails like me I highly recommend the BFG KO2. if your ride is a dedicated trail machine that you trailer, I’d recommend a big mud terrain. Just my two cents 👍🏼

They have worked very well for me on Texas limestone and some muddy/sandy forest trails. These ones in particular are also load range E, 3 ply, HD. I love the Maxxis trepador 37 12.5 17 C rated on my full-size wheeling truck. It’s a half ton truck with 1 ton axles, and I don’t put anything heavier than some camping gear in it. They work great for everything, super flexible in the dirt/rocks. I’ll never buy BFGs ever again. Same truck, pre axle swap, had 7 33 12.5 15 tires separated badly. Last one just lost the whole tread at 75 mph on the I-10. Changed my shorts, checked tire pressure, still at 35 psi.

The tire I used to love the most was the Maxxis Bighorns, but they only ran up to a 35, and now they're discontinued. I've never liked the BFG M/Ts. IRoks are great in snow, but they puncture easily with hidden sticks or sharp rocks in snow! For snow and mud wheeling I prefer something with a bigger spaced block tread. They bite the snow and pull you through. Some people say an X/T or A/T are better for snow because they will pack up, but I've always seen people spinning more. As far as sidewalls, more sidewall (8 or 10 ply) works best on trucks. I run a 4 ply on my Jeep because it's so light.

On my 5th set of 35s on my TJ, and I think the best for rocks has been the Nitto Terra Grappler AT that they stopped making for a 15-inch wheel. First was a set of Pro-Comp X-Terrain directionals, then the Nittos, then a set of Pro-Comp MTs, then some old and used BFG 1st gen MTs, and now General Grabber X3 MTs. The more siping, the more biting edges to generate friction when on the rocks.

A tire I never hear about is the Sailun TerraMax. Had them on a daily/wheeling rig as their A/T variant, did good in the mud and snow (pushing snow with the headlights kinda deep), and still got 50,000 miles of good street manners out of them. When the rig transition to a wheeling camping rig, put the R/T variant on and did great in the mud, snow, and OK in the rocks. There's definitely better tires out there but at $100-$200 a tire still today for 33"-35"s can't complain about the value. Does anyone else has experience with these tires?

I’m not done with the video but I’ve been running a 40” sticky Baja boss Mickey…I’m happy with them so far. Under my 2800# zuk they work great! I run mostly rocky terrain in SE Oklahoma.. Clayton, twin mountains, rugged mountain ranch type terrain. I run with a lot of krawlers, treps, and SXs.. I loved the iroks back in the day. I ran a 36 on the same zuk.

Really good; the trick in my view is buy what you want. Daily/Weekend-Warrior is vastly different than a trailer rig. Front Lockers/ Rear Lincoln, shackle flips steering rams etc. relegate ones rig, so shoot for the moon. The sweet spot is 42" love the bogger cut for snow rear w/ SX up front leaving water available if rear-steer. Front planted on rock, boggers digging in the slime.

I ram the delium mts as a budget tire when I finished my 1 ton swap until I purchased my Maxxis RZRs. To be honest I loved them. I rock crawled and snow wheeled with them. Only think I didn't care for was the E rated side wall. Had to air down quite a bit for any side wall flex. They balanced easily as well.

Good video! Hope to see the Unreal Adventure content soon. Just subbed their channel. I like my BFG AT and MT tires on my ZR2 Blazer. They have low-no road noise and awesome off-road handling. I'm not extreme at all, or a rock crawler, but just an average trail/trail blazing guy. Like you said, tires are temporary, worth trying out some different stuff.

I had those Mickey MTZs, I didn't love them. It took a ton of weights to balance and they wobbled a lot on me going down the highway. I much preferred the Ridgegrapplers I had before or even the general grabbers I have now that I absolutely love. I know they aren't an MT but they are great all around daily drivers.

My biggest complaint with going from 15s to 17s is that the load rating jumped from C to E for common old school sizes. I love the RT/Hybrid segment though. I went from MFG KM's to the MickeyT BBAT's and love them for a draily driver. They're D's though. For my YJ, I would have wanted to run C's but they weren't available in a 35/315. For my vintage Jeep, I just bought some STA 650-16 Super Traxxions for that vintage look. I wish they had 700-16 in the tread. I just didn't want to run 700-16 NDT/NDCC's for a street use.

For me the most important thing is cost, especially for offroad based tires. They all are not going to last if you have to street them a lot, that is just the nature of the tire design for offroad. I won't even look at top priced options, I always start with the bottom price and try to find the ones with the best tech/features available for the types of terrain I'm looking to use them on. Compound is really important for offroading different terrain, I find that is talked about the least with durometer readings which is just odd. The dirtbike community talks a lot about that for example. Trying out some Prinx HiCountry M/T HM1s on my CJ5, interested to see how they do on the PNW trail and street conditions. Great video, loved seeing all the awesome rigs you got!

I bought a TJ on eBay that had ARB's on both ends, an Atlas 2 with a long arm set up It also had Swamper Irok's and those were the best tires in all kinds of conditions. One of the best snow tires I've had on an off road ready rig. When they wore out I replaced them with General Grabbers, worst tire ever. The Grabbers couldn't even handle rain. I replaced those with Mickey Thompson MTZ P3's Like the Swampers but better handling on road. I've been disappointed with the BFG's A/T's that I put on my Tundra. Should've bought Mickeys.

My neighbor had the early generation of the mile star MT. Those seemed to have some problems for him with tread coming off and blowing out the sidewall. Granted he beat on them at low PSI and got several trips before failure. Overall I don't think they are terrible if you're not gonna get super rough with it, a more expensive tire can handle heavy abuse better.
