We continue trying to fix the Td5's "death wobble", by doing a Discovery drop arm conversion, fitting SUMOBARS, and new shock absorbers.

You have obviously never watched Wheeler Dealers. Ed China top tip “When removing the steering wheel, do not remove the nut fully. That way when you pull on the wheel you do not whack yourself in the face” 😂

Steering wheel removal. Leave the nut on a couple turns, brace knees up behind bottom of wheel and then a sharp tug on top of wheel and off she pops. The nut stops it smacking you in the face!

Hi Guys, Liam I would suggest when removing a steering wheel, undoing the retaining nut until it is FLUSH with the steering column (the bit it's attached to!!!) & only then unstick the steering wheel from the shaft (so you don't wear a steering wheel on your face; OUH PAINFUL), then you can remove the nut & steering wheel, job done!!! Liam lots of people call Land Rovers, CARS. I have no problem with that, whichever model it is (yes including 101 Defender, S1,2&3 & early Discos). I prefer the Discos (any & all) to the Defender, especially 3 to 5 & Sport! Don't let people make you call them Land Rovers when you want to call them cars, as they ARE cars (& lovely ones also). What happened to those rather nice spectacles you had for about one video? Keep up the good work. Byeee, Ian.

Gillian St-Claire second that. Always leave the nut one torn, on the column tp prevent it decapitating you.

i got the same problem with my defender td5 '00, as you, i tried many things, the only one that fixed the wobble was a new power steering box.

You going to need to take the steering arms off again, as the wobble is most likely the swivel housing preload is to light, results in the wobble. Regards to the steering wheel make sure the drop arm is in the centre first the adjust the wheel to that and your need to adjust the steering rod after that too

I remember quite a while back we tried everything to solve a rear suspension problem on a Landrover County. It later turned out to be a worn A frame ball joint.

Put the steering wheel back to where it was and adjust the track arm to straighten it. The clock ring you mentioned under steering wheel is not adjustable.

Hey. Firstly, you should note that there is a difference between a death wobble and a steering wobble. Death wobble is a steering shake that affects the entire car, the whole things shakes violently and you NEED to slow down to eliminate it. Called death wobble because it feels like you're about to crash and die! Steering wobble is where the steering wheel kind'a shakes a bit in your hand. Sometimes over bumps, sometimes on smooth road. They're not the same thing. Death wobble indicates a major suspension problem(bushes, loose joints, bearings(swivel) etc. Like the last reply said(Balh_) .. make sure you check the steering shaft too. Also check front shock bushes(will cause steering wobble). Personally, I'd just change front shocks too. But it's important for us to help you if we understand if you have a death wobble, or a steering wobble!

Also try fitting a set of standard wheels and tyres to the front to see if that stops the wobble

for the death wobbles check your tyres for diameter as some tyres wear differently as they age regular rotation can help. Also you should get yourself a can of neverseez pure nickel antiseize compound and apply to anything with threads or tapers whenever you have them apart. you don't need much so a can will last until either you or your defender expires. this makes dissasembly much easier next time.

I’ve got 265/75/16 BFF KO2’s in my Land Cruiser and I’ve had them balanced three times. I’m fed up with them to be honest but I’m going to try Dyna Beads inside the tyres. Google them. They’re used in trucks to balance tyres. Apparently they’re a bit like lead shot.

Check the bearings in your swivel housings and your wheel bearings for excessive movement, that can give you steering wobble for sure.

Check the wheels for center buckles ..... had the same thing with my ninety and did all except the disco conversation.... even put heavy duty springs in .... turns out to be the wheels centers ...exact same wheel type of wheels as well modular.... I recon it’s to do with hard off-roading. Oh and I it fixed it ..... change your wheels out .... allloys are preferable (they don’t bend) Also some wheel balancing machines won’t show a center buckle

Your new drag link may need to be a different length since you changed the drop arm. Because of this the front wheels may not be aligned and need to be adjusted via the track rod. Check the distance between the front and back of the front wheels. If not the same you will certainly get tire wear and probably some wobble when road friction differs. Good luck.
@gillianst-claire176
@gillianst-claire176 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, you mean measure the distance between the front of the front wheels & then the distance between the rear of the front wheels & compare them, find what the Toe should be (+, 0 or -) & compare it to your measurements!!! OR...Take it to a tyre garage & have the Toe checked, would be a better idea!!!! I hope this helps you & anyone else. Regards, Ian.

Your hitting the wrong part, you need to hit the end of the track rod at the drop arm end and hit the control arm on the end at the wheel, thrash it with a 7 pound hammer it will come apart.
