In short, leave the same amount of thread on each end when setting up to give yourself the widest range of adjustability, like a turnbuckle.

Hi Mike could you do a video on how to tighten up a steering box? Not sure how tight to do the adjuster. Also ive had a very strange issue at the moment with 2 good recons where if you turn left the steering goes really tight as off there is no power steering. Replaced with LR recon and was a bit better but getting worse again.

I think your problem is not the steering box adjustment but maybe bad hoses or the pump pressure - I know it sounds stupid, but I had a guy last year with the similar issues, and the box was fine - it was the bits that connected to it that were faulty - I seem to recall it was a hose that was not right - fitted a genuine hose and all was well That said, it could be anything - if you can grab some good known parts from a mate and try them, then you can isolate the problem by substitution, but I would not recommend adjusting a LR recon box as you could make matters worse!

See that cross eye? My friend put his spectre 110 (don't ask 🙄) in for tracking and the drag arm was siezed solid on the cross eye, I'm not sure why they were trying to shift it and not the track rod but hey ho, it was a quick fit type place, they applied a lot of heat followed by their biggest stilsons with a scaffold tube on the handle, it didn't want to move, so having tortured the poor thing they gave in and sent him away.... He made it 2 miles before the cross eye thread sheared off and he was left with no steering, luckily he had just turned into a garage when it let go! I managed to get a new Cross eye bracket and new drag link from my local LR spares and fitted it at the roadside, could have been a lot worse.

@@BritannicaRestorations shall I tell you about my (then) 6 month old Ford galaxy that broke down? Towed into my local Ford dealership, a week later the service manager tells me that the fuel tank is red rusty and all the fuel lines the same.... All needs replacing due to suspected contaminated diesel corroding everything , I pointed out that the tank and lines are plastic...... He shut up then. 😂 I walk around like Victor Meldrew in total disbelief at people's incompetence.

Should the steering wheel adjustment be done before, or after, a wheel alignment? Also, I assume it’s the same principle as a Disco 2? Cheers Mike. 👍🏻🙏🦘

Aaah! I'll have to go do some fine tuning. Mine has always been out by a little bit. Maybe a 1/4 turn. Thanks Mike.

Did you also read Michael as I did in passing in the manual a few months ago that the box is central without the the same amount of turns from left to right, interesting hey? I didn't see that in reading for pleasure in the past. LOOK AFTER YOUR TURBOS BECAUSE WHO WANTS TO PLAY WITH THEM! ! !

Maybe that is why they pin the arm in the straight ahead position?

See my comment on Mike’s previous post on the steering. It’s the rubber gaiter on the indicator stalk
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 2 жыл бұрын
It depends if the blue ring on the stalks is in the right place or the prongs on the back of the steering wheel is not in the right place

Mike, put the pin in the pitman arm to box, then adjust the steering wheel by removing it and replacing it at straight ahead, then adjust the length to bring the primary wheel true, then you can carry out tracking, good string and a spring and have never been more that .25deg out, but I still think you are the very very best chap talking about landys, kind regards Phil
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Phil - I have done tracking with string, but front mudflaps spoil the outcome - sometimes as they get in the way But you do the tracking first THEN the steering wheel straightness - not the other way round
Answered question. Why is there play in my Adwest power steering box?
