I read it. I had to take pauses in between, because at its heart, theirs was a depraved relationship. She was literally a child when they met, and when they semi-consummated their relationship, I believe she was actually 16. In my mind, I've listened to and studied Marvin's music for all my life , and after this autobiography had to completely compartmentalize the vast difference between the artist and the man himself. My mother passed in September 2022, she grew up in Washington, DC and went to school with Marvin Gaye. As I wrote her obituary, I remembered the stories she told me about being invited by Marvin to travel with him as a background singer. My mother would not go alone and her best friend would not go with her so she turned down the offer. After the funeral, I ordered Jan Gaye's book out of curiosity. I did not read it until I heard the unfortunate news of her death. Upon completing the book, I realized my mother dodged a bullet - perhaps a life scared by drugs and sexual abuse. May Jan Gaye rest in eternal peace and may her story shine a light on the protection society needs to provide for its young women.

The glue that help Marvin and Janis was addiction to drugs and sex. As much as I love Marvin he was a domestic violence abuser. Threatening to kill Janis taking her son away from her. Expecting her to be sexual with whom ever he chose. As well as his need to control her. Sad that after all the abuse she suffered as a child, she fell for what was familiar by accepting all types of abuse Marvin used towards her.
@navismith Жыл бұрын
This is victim blaming. I never understood why people love to use the narrative that someone purposely chose an abuser instead of understanding that abusers are extremely manipulative and will make you believe that they are kind and caring. Many abusers suffer from severe narcissistic personality disorders or antisocial personality disorders. Making them more prone to manipulate others very well. Some even play the broken person role. Making empathetic people feel the need to help them even though I’m reality they have no intention of getting better. It’s likely that if she knew what she was truly getting herself into and wasn’t a child she wouldn’t have just been with him knowing all of this.

By all accounts, Anna didn't care what Marvin did as long as it didn't leak out to the press. Everyone I know (and I have some contacts in Detroit) have always said this. Anna knew EXACTLY what she was marrying and was prepared for it. It wasn't like she was young...she was older than Marvin. It wasn't a marriage of love anyway. They were both getting what they wanted out of the marriage. Anna lusted after Marvin and Marvin married her because he knew Motown was the reason he got to where he was. Anna and Marvin were both swingers and it was all very understood. They had an arrangement that worked for the both of them. Supposedly, Anna is the one who taught Marvin what to do (in the bedroom). Some of the Gordys were pimps and prostitutes...this was known. They hung around all of that behind the scenes. There would need to be like a "The Crown" type of miniseries to even begin to cover all that went down at Motown. I would be here for all of it too!

When I was 22, I ran into him again. He asked how my mom was and then asked me out on a date. And before I could get over the shock of him asking and to reject his offer, he said, "I've been waiting for you to grow up." Since then more and more men from my childhood have exposed their true intentions and I a now questioning all of these hidden predators in my life. I bought his book not too long after it was released. It was interesting to say the least. Marvin was extremely talented as a vocalist, musician, songwriter, composer and producer. Marvin could have been a record executive. However he had a brutal childhood at the hands of his father. Not condoning his behavior but Marvin never sought any type of treatment to resolve his issues. As far as the mind control goes read his book Divided Soul. Someone in the commentioned his lack of moral values. That was passed on from his father. Also it seems like he had a love-hate relationship with his mother.

There isn't any amount of money that would justify it to give my child or me peace. Money just can't buy your piece of mind back or the innocence of your child. Anyway I believe those are just rumors of unreliable folks who are just spreading gossip on someone they barely know and that's sad.

I grew up loving this man's music, and although I don't listen to music anymore, his songs still flow through my mind, especially "What's Going On".
