I have been fascinated with the 1911 since my grandfather handed me his when I was 8 years old. I just recently turned 73 and I have 17, 1911s in my collection. I have 1911s from Colt, AMT, Iver Johnson, Springfield Armory, Taurus, Llama, Rock Island Armory, Browning and just recently added a 9mm Tisas Stingray. I haven't had an opportunity to take it to the range yet. But a comparison of the Tisas to several other 1911s in my collection shows me that the Tisas is the equal or is superior to any of the other 1911s in my collection even the two Colts in fit and finish. I have 3 RIA 1911s a nikeled 45, a 38 Super and a widebody 22TCM/9mm. The Tisas definitely has a higher standard of fit and finish. I will note that the 9mm barrel from the 22TCM/9mm combination, works just fine in the 38 Super that shows me that RIA is holding their tolerances pretty close.

Low priced doesn't mean cheaply built. RIA and TISAS are great bargains for someone on a budget. As long as the malfunctions are nil, i'd depend on either in self defense. 230gr is going to make you a believer. My old rattle frame GI Joe issued pistol never failed me, again i'd trust these.

@BoomStickTactical Thanks for the video. The differences are the lowered ejection port which saves on digging ejected brass and might slightly enhance increase ejection reliability. The magwell is slightly beveled for easier magazine insertion. Of course the the inscriptions are different. From a few feet away,the differences don't matter. The only thing I did was to change out the grips to a wood grips w/chekering and "U.S." Good enough for MY work. These are fantastic..

Because, and ONLY because you asked, my opinion is to stay with the Tisas. My first modern 1911 was the RIA GI. It was adequate and nothing more at $425. About two years later, an email from CDNN was selling the Tisas SS45 Duty, stainless steel, rail, ambi safeties, Novak-style sights, skeletonized hammer and trigger, G10 grips and a way better trigger pull. For $450. No turning that down. Sometime in there I purchased the much more expensive RIA Rock Ultra 10mm HiCap, which was then, and still is the most unreliable handgun I have ever owned. To this day, I watch every new video I can find on this pistol and if RIA has ever corrected the problem, I have seen no evidence of it. I have, however, made it a point to check out the Tisas Match 45; it has some hand fitting and NO mim parts. In my mind there is no comparison.

Currently own the RIA 1911, was just telling someone I wanted to buy a Tisas next lol. I have no issues with the ria, I was a bit hesitant because of some things I had heard but… happy with the firearm. I’m just now getting back into firearms, sold everything I had many yrs back (with very few exceptions, e.g. family heirlooms) when I was starting my trucking business. So… that said I have been BUYING up firearms & really enjoying the “experimentation” of the cheaper brands while building my collection back up.😁😁

I just bought a Tisas 1911A1 service special it is 45 ACP but it has a flat mainspring housing like the standard 1911 and sights stand up a little taller than the standard 1911 and it has a commander hammer on it. It was a tight pistol when I first got it but after firing it now has that traditional 1911 rattle with the hammer pulled back and and the magazine out. The series is 70 much simpler and I do like it better .

People who do gun reviews have said that the only difference between the Tisas US Army version and the Governmental model was the markings and the expanded ejection port. That is because every single modern 1911 has the larger ejection port. I prefer the series 70 internals. As far as I know that is the closest we can get to the original internals.

All imported handguns must pass a "drop safe" test. While these are "Series 70" _design,_ (no mechanical firing pin block) they accomplish the drop safe feature by using much heavier than normal firing pin springs and a heavier than normal hammer spring (main spring) to overcome the heavy firing pin spring and prevent "light primer strikes". At the price point of these guns, two springs is a much more economical way to achieve this goal than a mechanical system like the "Series 80" (as Colt calls it) or the other systems used by Kimber, Ruger, etc. The bad news is that whatever imagined advantage there is to a Series 70 handgun is lost in overcoming the heavier trigger pulls caused by the heavy mainspring. That spring is putting a lot of tension on the sear. That tension must be overcome to fire the pistol. It also causes the pistols to be harder to "rack"...cock the hammer by manipulating the slide. So how do you "fix" it? Simple. Replace the heavy firing pin spring with a standard 1911 firing pin spring (this also makes it much easier to remove and replace the firing pin retainer, firing pin and extractor for cleaning) and replace the 23-27 lb. mainspring with a 15 lb. mainspring. I purchased a "kit" of mainsprings with 15, 16, and 17 pound mainsprings from Wilson Combat. I use the 15 lb. spring in my "Charles Daly" branded Armscor pistol (who also makes RIA and Citadel pistols). Use the lightest spring that gives 100% reliability. I also use a recoil spring rated for the ammunition I am using. (I keep several different weight recoil springs for different ammunition, from light target loads to heavy +P defense loads) To keep the "drop safe" feature, replace the firing pin with a Titanium firing pin. I used a Wilson Combat "bulletproof" titanium firing pin. I also replaced the extractor with a Wilson Combat extractor...but that's optional. Be sure to measure the diameter of the tip of the firing pin before ordering a new one. The Armscor pistols take the mil-spec standard diameter firing pins, but some makes may use a smaller or larger firing pin. Firing pins are available in different sizes. This whole process takes less time than I used to explain it, minimal tools (and tools which any 1911 owner should have anyway) and about $60 in parts. You get a true Series 70 with the added advantage of being "drop safe" and an easier to manipulate pistol and somewhat lighter trigger pull. I own 6 1911s, 3 Colts, 2 Kimbers and the Charles Daly Armscor which I purchased for an "I can't go wrong price". The Armscor pistol has been great, and was the best value for dollar of any of them.

@@jasonlehman2090 Great. That's the best way to pass the drop test for importation but it is a little pricier for the manufacturer than a couple of springs. Colt never needed the whole "Series 80" nonsense, all they ever needed was a titanium firing pin.

Series 80 utilizes an firing pin block deactivated by an extra lever from pulling the trigger. Gunsmiths have complained that it messes with a good trigger job. That is untrue. It's been around long enough that most competent gunsmith ought to he able to deliver a crisp, clean trigger job. I've had 2 series 80 1911s, one tuned by a local gunsmith, and one tuned by Terry Tussey Gunsmithing, both with super nice triggers. Series 70 does not use a firing pin block. Springfield Armory uses a titanium. Firinf pin to reduce the mass and potential for an AD shoukd if be dropped in its muzzle.

The buls are a more polished pistol but they have cast frames where the tisas, girsan and springfields are forged. I have a bul armory, a girsan 3 tisas and 2 springfield armory 1911s. I have customed my girsan and got it as polished and as accurate as my buls and springfields but at that point i was at the 1200 dollar mark so i have learned to just save and buy the more polished units. My 3 tisas are the commander length bobtails 2 aluminum forged frames and one steel. The tisas have zero front and back strap checkering and their barrels arent as good as the bul and springfields (accuracy). The springfields are emissarys 5inch railed in 45 and 4.25 inch commander length in 9mm. My bul armory is more a kin to a 2011, it's the double stack sas2 ultralight 3.25 inch 9mm. These are all quality pistols but the most accurate are the emissaries and the bul. If price point is a factor, you can indeed buy a quality 1911 for 500 bucks and in some cases less. I highly recommend Girsan simply because it came out of the box with a trigger as good as the more expensive guns and with bolt in simple mods it shoots and groups as tight as a big buck 1911, mine is the mc1911s, and its a winner.

I have both. I've got a pair of tisas M1911A1 GI model... And several Rock Island armory full size models one of which is a standard GI model and a pair of them are the A1 hybrid Patriot Brown. I say hybrid because the A1 model does not have a flat mainspring housing but the Patriot Brown RIA does. I have no complaints for either. I've put several thousand rounds through all of them and honestly I've never had a single malfunction. No stove piping no failure to a jack no failure to feed. But then again I baby the hell out of the 1911s and I always take them apart when I get them and I do some light polishing on the inside. If I had to pick one of the two... As far as the companies... I would go with Rock Island armory. They have a better overall reputation. And I believe that they are of a slightly higher quality overall. But again don't get me wrong here...tisas does make a very solid product. And honestly... I always end up taking the insides out of these budget priced 1911s and I replaced them with the bulletproof line from Wilson combat. And I mean everything on the inside including the barrel bushing on the end. some of the stuff does require some fitting. But with a little bit of patience... Trust me you can do it. The 1911 at first might seem like a very intimidating gun because it comes apart into quite a few pieces. I'm talking complete slide disassembly and complete frame disassembly. Yeah it is intimidating at first but if you just practice putting it together taking it apart and taking your time and paying attention you will get comfortable with it eventually. When it comes to the 1911... All modifications whether cosmetic or internal components I'm comfortable enough with my own abilities to never need a gunsmith for anything. With the 1911. Not other pistol platforms. But then again I've been shooting the 1911 and modifying them on my own for the better part of 25 years now. I have full face in both manufacturers mentioned in this video. At the end of the day what's really going to matter the most is how well you take care of your weapon. The 1911 tends to be a bit finicky. If you're going to be shooting hollow point ammo out of it... Make sure that the tips of those bullets have a slight curve to them do not get a flat top hollow point. The 1911 is not designed to fire bullets like that. Just make sure you keep it properly lubricated and cleaned and it should give you a lifetime of service. Reliable service. I trust my life and my children's life to the 1911. And I pray I never have to use one against another human being. But if it comes down to it... Whatever it takes to make sure my babies are safe. And the 1911 it does now come in every caliber you can imagine. I won't purchase a 1911 if it's not a 45 ACP. I like to stick with the original caliber. Anyway this is a great video it's very well done. And thank you to anybody that's still reading my rant. Stay safe out there and God bless.

@@BoomStickTactical You prevent hammer bite by installing a beaver tail. Why do you think they were invented...just to look cool? I spent over 17 years in the Marines (who know a thing or two about shooting) using 1911s for over half of that time. We were taught the "proper way" to shoot a 1911 was get as high of a grip as we could on the weapon. For anyone with large or meaty hands this meant the grip safety would be sunk into the fleshy web between thumb and pointer finger. Thus ensuring a hammer bite. I would end up bleeding after a day at the range for qualification. And in fact have a scar that is still visible after almost 40 years.

I own handguns from both companies. That are indeed fine choices. I think Tisas has a slight edge over RIA in fit-up, finish and in materials. The frame and slide are forged on the Tisas whereas RIA uses a forged slide and cast frame, not that it really matters to the average shooter. I cringe every time I hear "Series 70" used when talking about 1911s. It's kind of like when someone takes our their cell phone to "video tape" something. There was a single part that was introduced in the Colt Series 70 that differentiated it from previous 1911s of all makes. The part was a collet-style barrel bushing that was intended to improve accuracy. It was soon discontinued and has not been used in 50 years. The Series 80 is indeed a modification is of the firing mechanism. Series 70 never was.

"There was a single part that was introduced in the Colt Series 70 that differentiated it from previous 1911s of all makes. The part was a collet-style barrel bushing that was intended to improve accuracy." It wasn't just a single part. It was a two-part system: "Accurizer" barrel and collet-type bushing. The barrel had a slightly larger outer diameter on the muzzle end for the "fingers" of the collet bushing to grip tightly when in battery. It worked well to improve accuracy, but it was also more prone to breakage than a standard solid bushing, and made field-stripping more difficult. "It was soon discontinued and has not been used in 50 years." It was used for 18 years (1970 to 1988), and it's only been 36 years since 1988. Series 80 came along in 1983, supplanting Series 70, but Series 80 originally retained the Accurizer barrel and bushing in addition to having the new firing pin safety. In 1988 they went back to the standard GI style barrel and solid bushing, but of course they kept the firing pin safety.

@@MaximRecoil 1911s are a passion of mine and I own many. I've always considered the collet-style barrel bushing as the exclusive difference at the introduction of the Series 70. New rollmark aside. The accurizing barrel was really nothing more than fitting the bushing to the barrel. Surprisingly, my lowly Remington R1 Carry had the best barrel to bushing of any 1911 I own under $2000.
@MaximRecoil
@MaximRecoil 4 күн бұрын
@@jaydee5156 "I've always considered the collet-style barrel bushing as the exclusive difference at the introduction of the Series 70." It's not a matter of opinion. The Accurizer barrel is, as a matter of fact, different than a GI-profile barrel, so there are two different parts that constituted the Series 70 changes, not just one. Like I said, the Accurizer barrel increases in diameter at the muzzle end (the section that's larger in diameter is roughly an inch long). A standard 1911 barrel has the same diameter for the entire length of the bore, like a pipe. It is very easy to demonstrate this even if you don't have calipers to measure it. With an original Accurizer barrel removed from the gun, and with the collet bushing slid onto it, you can easily see/feel that it grips the muzzle end of the barrel tightly, but if you slide the bushing toward the chamber, it soon loses grip on the barrel altogether and can slide and spin around freely. That's only possible with a barrel that increases in diameter at the muzzle end. There's even a video here on KZbin that you can watch that demonstrates this, if you don't have the parts to try it yourself. The title is "The Collet Barrel Bushing" on a channel called BATJAC J.W. "The accurizing barrel was really nothing more than fitting the bushing to the barrel." No, that would have defeated the purpose of it altogether. The idea behind it was to achieve a tight barrel-to-bushing fit while in battery, _without_ having to spend the man hours fitting each bushing to each barrel. The collet bushing's four "fingers" are springy, so they can grip tightly to a certain tolerance range of diameters, just like a rubber band can fit tightly around a range of diameters, so no fitting is required to achieve a tight fit when in battery.

So for those of you that don't know the difference between a series 70 and a series 80... The series 80 has an extra safety measure. It has what's called a firing pin block. It's just this tiny little rod that sits in a channel preventing the firing pin from moving forward... As you are depressing or squeezing the trigger it moves it out of the way and allows the firing pin to fall onto the primer. I personally have had a series 80 and I got rid of the damn thing. I do not like the extra safety measure I believe it is unnecessary in a 1911. There's enough safeties as it is. And the firing pin block is just one more damn thing to take apart when you're taking the slide apart. It's a personal preference thing. I will stick with the series 70. I will never own another series 80.

"No one prefers a series 80." Wrong. I prefer Series 80. I've removed the Series 80 parts from my 1990 Colt Government Model, replacing them with a filler plate designed for the purpose, and I noticed no difference whatsoever in the feel of the trigger pull. Since I couldn't tell the difference, there was no benefit to removing that extra layer of safety, so I reinstalled it. Also, the Series 80 mechanism has a [probably unintended] benefit that most people are completely unaware of, i.e., due to the way the plunger part of it in the slide butts up against the extractor, it acts as an anti-clocking device for the extractor, eliminating the need for the extractor to be precisely fitted into its hole in order to prevent clocking. With the GI design, an extractor that isn't precisely fitted can clock/shift and that's a common cause of reliability problems. With Series 80, the extractor doesn't have to be precisely fitted, yet it still works as well as one that is precisely fitted.
