Warning: This is a 30 min video. Some folks hate longer videos, so I've taken the liberty of breakign down the video into chapters, which might help some folks.
Chapters
00:09 - showing clear.
01:24 - Trigger weight and thick wall.
03:11 - Testing the irons.
05:44 - Zeroing the optic.
09:03 - Testing the optic's zero.
12:06 - Added an optic shim due to mitigate possible optic cut issue.
12:29 - Is this an optics issue or optics cut (gun) issue?
19:06 - Rail issue due to non-standard 3-notch rail.
21:26 - Rail issue is pre-existing (has been occurring the past two years with Tisas single stacks).
24:43 - Durability of the gun (hasn't been cleaned or lubed since I first received it).
26:29 - Mag availability.
28:35 - Cyelee optic talk.
The above should help folks that don't want to watch all 30 minutes of the footage. A large portion of the video, I talk about the optic, the optics cut, and the rail, which are negatives of this example of the Carry DS9, sadly.

Doing research on this model. Your experience is helpful. Question, Did you measure the cut? A set of calipers from Harbor Freight has been invaluable to me. It takes time to measure. I hope you worked through this with Tisas. I picked up an Aviator to answer questions I had. I had an excellent customer service experience with SDS/Tisas when it developed some problems. All is right as rain now. BTW when I got the Aviator home, field stripped, it was the dirtiest example of a new gun I ever encountered. I detailed stripped at that point cleaning and lubing it along with noting that the internals were cerakoted. sigh... I used a fine grit nail file and flitz polishing to remove the cerakote. It was all very smooth then. Remember if a Man builds it sooner or later its gonna break. Good information. I hope you continue to enjoy your example. Post an update when you get a chance.

I saw others reach out to Tisas and saw how Tisas responded to others (not really favorable), so I opted to be happy with my workaround of the issue. I don't really trust them to fix it. I document the issue via KZbin so that others can be aware before making a purchase. Eventually, I'll send the gun to someone that can properly mill an optics cut.

@@unixfool I hear ya. I went into this with low expectations to answer questions. I trust SDS/TISAS to fix things. Their US based Smiths are not going to do the same "Style" work as a Nighthawk, Wilson or Les Baer. The 9mm Aviator specimen sent back had/has some fitment issues. I sent a laundry list of small issues, I wanted to make the trip back count. The 2 things that were surprising. The barrel was replaced and the Thumb safety replaced. The barrel was not fit well from the start, however relatively accurate. It is tight now front and rear. The Thumb safety went from just ok to mush. On my list, Not listed in the work order, It was replaced with a new safety (It clicks now but firm). Do not send magazines back with the pistol unless its part of the problem. They will disappear. Mine were missing upon return. I properly complained through email. Nothing, crickets. 3 weeks later a package shows up with 2 new 10 rd mags. I don't know if it was an individual or is being addressed by policy. It is paying attention though. Some Customer Service experiences can really sour your views of a company.... Yes I'm talking to you Ed Brown. My 2 cents send it back to Tisas. Your cut issue will get addressed. What will it cost you to find out? Nothing but some time. I have updated my Aviator with a Wilson BP Thumb safety, a spare set of wood grips, 10-8 NM rear sight, A flat wire recoil spring, GI style. That is about the extent of updates. It is a dollar proposition of how much to put in to this at this time. So basically I have just shy of $600 in. It is a whole lot more fun and better shooting than a Glock.

I saw someone post their support experience on a 1911 forum: www.1911forum.com/posts/13982200/ “I bought a pre-cut slide a few months ago that had the optic cut problem. I ran out of elevation on my Holoson 407k without being able to zero. I contacted SDS, which paid for returning the slide, and got the slide back about a month later with nothing but an unfitted cheap delrin plastic wedge in the box, which was not a good fit and leaves very little stud elevation to catch in the corresponding optic holes. I was hoping for a recut or a replacement slide. It's a lot of money to spend for a defective part. I'm done with SDS and Tisas.” In my opinion, that was handled by Tisas in an incompetent manner. When I've seen Tisas interacting with folks in the forums regarding this issue, Tisas has been very defensive -- more so than warranted. This is why I was standoff-ish about dealing with them about it. I'd rather just leave my assessment on KZbin, supported by Tisas' forum interactions, than have to deal with them doing the same thing with me. This situation sucks (as well as anyone that's affected by it), but that post kinda vindicates my feelings on the issue. This is offputting to the point that I don't think I'm going to recommend Tisas products to folks anymore. I will probably post a quick video about this so that viewers have additional data points to work with. I’ll eventually send it to a 3rd party to get it milled properly.

Well picked mine up today, 507k mounted, trigger work. Took it to the range to feel the trigger and zero the dot. Trigger felt great, BUT dot was pointing to the sky. Could not lower with adjustment. Glad I found this video, ordered the shim from Amazon. Went thru 4 mags, iron sights are off to the right but love the trigger, 3lbs.

Mine mounted an optic without issue and has been great so far, putting another 150 through it tomorrow. I mounted a tlr7 sub on mine as i liked how it fit better than the tlr7a. Definitely recommend taking it all the way down and tuning the springs for a better trigger pull. About an hour of work and itll be a nice 3-3.5 all day.

Thanks for viewing and sharing your input. The main issue I have is that Tisas has issues with things such as sights (they've documented issues with sight cuts), M1918 rails (they've documented issues with the way the rails are cut on Carry models of their guns - the TLR7 Sub is the only one that'll fit; options are extremely limited), and now they've problems with optics cuts. I share any info (negative or otherwise) that impacts me and that's what I've done in this video. You may not have an issue with yours, but there are enough folks having issues that Tisas has publicized that they've actually made adjustments to the optics cut to remedy those issues. There are trends that they're setting that isn't really conducive to their established reputation. Discovered issues should be remedied.
@breakdown7153
@breakdown7153 5 ай бұрын
@@unixfool I think you absolutely should document issues so others know if it is a trend. I have several tisas 1911's of various ages and have been lucky I guess with no issues in any of them. I hope yours gets sorted out! And yes the short "1913" rail on the carry is annoying but 🤷

You can adjust any 1911 or 2011 trigger by bending the leaf spring under your mainspring housing.Get the 45 auto shop manual it gives detailed instructions on every part and how to adjust and fit everything.
@unixfool
@unixfool Ай бұрын
@@alpalmieri8644 after I saw how the stock spring was, I opted to just buy one from Wilson Combat. The OEM one seemed hard in tension, which made it difficult to adjust. As well, it was oddly twisted a bit. I didn't even need to adjust the WC one but it will allow better adjustment than the OEM one. The new leaf spring lowered the trigger weight a bit and offered easier adjustment, but didn't resolve the stiff wall issue. A hammer spring change helped with that.

I was having trouble following you when you were talking about the dot pointing up. Wouldn't that change based on where your eye is located behind the optic and what the elevation screw was set to? Did the Holosun have a gap when mounted? Wouldn't the bottom of the shim have a gap also? What issue did this cause that couldn't be fixed by adjustments to the elevation? Did it bottom out the elevation screw so you couldn't sight in the red dot? Sorry for all the questions, I just didn't fully understand the issue beyond there being a visible light gap under the cheaper optic (forgot the name). Edit: after I got to the 23 minute mark I see you said you had to fit the shim. Did you have to file off some of the front? Do you think this is standard or maybe a worn tool didn't cut your optic cut large enough? Also, have you contacted Tisas USA about this? I am picking up my Duty model tomorrow and I hope this has been fixed and isn't a "feature" on all of them. I don't think I have seen many or any with optics installed in reviews yet, besides yours. Thanks for posting.
@unixfool
@unixfool 7 ай бұрын
I'm sorry for the incoming wall of text: Yeah, I said in the video that both the Cyelee and my Holosun 507K showed a gap when mounted. I'd mentioned that bit of information because a lot of folks were reflexively saying, "it's the cheap optic that's the problem" -- if that were the case, only the Cyelee optic would've had the issue and the Holosun would've been fine. While the optic dot location will change in relation to the location of your eye, if you're sighting the irons and then look at the optic, the dot (within the glass) should be in a *generally* centered location. The dot shouldn't be super low or super high on the glass. When I placed both dots on the gun and then looked down the irons, both dots were almost off the glass...was 12 oclock high. The Holosun was doing it but wasn't doing it when mounted to a different 1911. The bottom of the shim isn't showing a gap, but the shim isn't metal. It's a thin sheet of delrin, so I'm assuming it's compressing and filling in the gap when I screw down the optic. It's thin, so it's probably bending a bit to fill the gap, as well. I didn't try to zero either optic when they were sitting so high. IMO, doing that would've been a waste of my range time, so I opted to use the optic shim and zero the gun...even while I was able to zero the optic, I may have been at the edge of elevation adjustment (not sure, as I never reached the bottom, but I had to add a LOT of adjustment). I also chatted with someone with this exact same gun and he had the exact same issue with his Holosun 507K. He said he wasn't able to zero his 507K because he ran out of elevation adjustment, so he used an optics shim to get better adjustment (that's what they're designed to do). Yes, I'm thinking that the optic is cut wrong, probably due to worn tooling or something that is just out of spec. I've seen at least three folks talking about them struggling to get the optic mounted properly. The main reason I spent so much time in the video discussing it is because I think some folks are way too quick to blame a cheap optic as being the cause of such an issue (luckily I had two that I tried). Another reason is because Tisas sometimes knowingly does not use proper specs - a good example of this is the Pic rails on the Carry 1911s...those rails are cut in a non-standard fashion, so that most lights can't fit the rail. Another is the sight cuts - they are notorious for not fitting most Novak style sights. Note that I don't think this issue is so widespread, so your Duty may be OK. Some guys may be able to have just enough elevation adjustment to sight in their optic, so maybe they're not complaining. If you receive your Duty, you can always use an optics shim, so all is not lost. Another option is to send the gun to get a proper cut (which I may do later on). I have not contacted Tisas about it (yet). I hope the above answers your questions. Again, sorry for the wall of text, but you asked a lot of questions that needed detailed replies! :) Thanks for watching - I'm actually shocked that someone commented on a topic that was that deep into the footage, as many folks seem to hate videos longer than 10 min.

That clears things up, thank you. I guess I missed some things you had explained already. I actually prefer long format videos and refuse to watch KZbin shorts. Not all of us have completely lost our attention span. Long, well thought out explanations are why Paul Harrel is my favorite content creator. By the way, I just picked up my Tisas DS Duty from the ffl and I have to say that the trigger on mine is amazing. It is about 3lbs and the wall is just perfect. The guys behind the counter said they are going to pick one up after feeling mine. Fit and lockup seem really good as well. I may want to carry this gun and I am a little concerned that the trigger is too good. I don't know if I got lucky or maybe they are correcting issues in assembly/manufacturing. Anyway, good luck with getting yours sorted out. At least you have some beautiful 2011s to fall back on. I plan to get the updated SAS II UL later this year! @@unixfool

Any other version of the TLR-7 will not, from what I've seen folks complaining about. Of all the compact/small lights, that is the only one that will fit, across the spectrum of lights. Again, this is from what I'm seeing folks complaining about, so I've no first hand experience, but it is a bit difficult to ignore.

I personally like a trigger with some smooth creep in it. That hard wall is distracting to me. Take up the slack and then steady pressure through the creep and ignition. Unless the trigger is very light, less than 3lbs, then I like a very discernable wall. I shoot both well, but a hard wall slows my split times as I have to be just a little slower on the trigger press.
