This was meant to be a straightforward 'RACP Repair & Reinforcement Process' but we were shocked when we saw how much corrosion had been eating this 2005 74k BMW E46 M3 alive!
Even with its desirable Manual Transmission and Coupe body, it had suffered a particularly hard life and corrosion has been taking hold over the 16 years it's been on the road.
Once the owner watched our 33-minute Intro video (what you're about to watch) he was horrified and a lot of the underside corrosion came as a shock.
He took a few days to think about his options and then decided to cut his losses with the vehicle and move on to something newer.
He offered the vehicle to us and we purchased it for its running gear.
Watch until the end of the video to see what's happening to this vehicle!

I had similar level of rust on a 320cd e46. Took over 250 hours of work to remedy the mid to back underbody where rear floor panels, battery box, inner rear arch panels, rear subframe cradles had to be replaced along with fabrication of new brake pipe brackets. I wouldn't advise anyone to attempt this themselves unless they are interested in learning appropriate restoration techniques...Thanks to this channel for providing me with great advise and direction through all of their restoration videos on the E46 chassis. You guys are awesome for sharing your knowledge with the E46 community 👍

@@465painkiller465 To me it wasn't about how much the cars value was, I saw an opportunity to learn a new craft and acquire the equipment that would allow me to work on more valuable cars in the future. If I botched the job it wasn't the end of the world, but thankfully it worked out amazingly so it was a really big win overall. There's another KZbin channel "Fitzee's Fabrications" that really helped me learn about panel fabrication using basic tools (if BMW dealership panels are too expensive). I wish you the best of luck with your 320i mate. Nothing is impossible to achieve if you have the patience and dedication✌

Absolute nightmare. I'm not totally shocked it got this state though - you will be lucky to find a rust free one at this point - nearly all of them must have had arch or sill repairs by now. Modern cars are quite good at hiding their rust with plastic sill protectors and the like. Glad to see the touring project will get running gear out of it. Car probably still worth 7k or so, but it might have been bought for 18k or so with those miles... Hopefully it wasn't too painful for the owner.

My solution to trapped corrosion is as follows. I remove as much corrosion as possible, spray it down with rust killer then coat the seams with large amounts of copper grease followed by wax-type rust-proofing. Then I will inspect and repeat if necessary every year... It does not look good but it will stop the rust. As you say cleaning up and painting is not going to work.

Remarkable that this isn't a regular upload, it's great. Well that must be a very disappointed owner of a low Mileage M3. Actually, it's not worth much more than the engine/transmission, what will it be 6 to 7 thousand? However, it would be a pity that it is not being restored. A nice challenge especially as the aren't any replacement or repair parts available.

I got rid of my 2003 E46 330d last year - it had half the corrosion this M3 did but the rear arches were worse. They were poorly "repaired" by the local BMW dealer under warranty and then they wouldn't touch it again when the rust came back 12 months later. This M3 is shocking!! But same outcome as mine, cut my losses and sold it as a donor car. The drivetrain now lives on in a technoviolet coupe.

As a Jaguar owner and welder of many and various things, I get somewhat fed up of people slagging off Jaguar cars for corrosion. I have a 2001 Jaguar XJ8 with 119K on the clock with nowherenear as much corrosion as the BMW in this video. It makes a refreshing change to see a BMW rotting away rather badly and needing saving from the scrapyard. A lot of cars rust away mainly because of bad maintenance by the owners from new.

Another great video James but, wow, what a mess ! I can only guess that this car must have been kept in a salty environment, perhaps near the sea and could hardly ever have had the salt washed off the underside (surely there must be a less damaging way to deal with frost and ice on our roads?) Anyway, keep up the good work.

I have significantly modified it and tarmac rally and tarmac hill climb it around where I live in Lake Taupo. I have owned and worked on a lot of BMWs The one shown in the video looks like it is really past redemption. As you said, when corrosion gets between spotwelded panels and flanges that is really the end I have eight BMWs of various models plus a BMW G1250 adventure bike. Constant salted roads in the winter at the merest sign of frost. It’s certainly got worse in recent years, cars rusting in the UK. I think it’s a combination of cars not being built as well (crappy e-coat on the underbodies instead of proper protection) and the salt we use seems to stick more to the cars. Maybe mixed with molasses etc to help adhesion to the road surface? I’ve heard this is sometimes used.

@@malcolmlee3285 The 12-year warranty applied to the later e46 as well. I know because it applied to my own e46 M3. My 2005 car looks better underneath than the majority of e9x cars I would wager, and it's not low miles, just been cleaned reguarly underneath and rust protected at intervals. The useage profile of the vehicle makes the most difference to the bodywork condition rather than design or material, you can see this in US cars depending on where they live in the country. @@--LZ--- Hhhmmm... the more people that think and do that, the more these will appreciate in value. Would you also scrap an E30 M3 Evo with this level of corrosion ?

@@davyboy888 depends on the sentimental value and amount of money you have... usually restorations like this are done by professionals which it is their hobby as well, so they take it as an interesting project for fun on the side, and they dont have to pay themselves for the hundreds of hours needed. Or some rich guy can just pay them the 50k dollars or whatever needed and get a top notch restoration.

Bullshit, this happens to any e46 or BMW of this vintage used in normal UK conditions. It’s completely unacceptable.

@@royfontaine5526 Not if people washed their cars properly, or just washed the underside once a year… If you drive it in salt, and don’t wash it afterwards, this will happen to any steel bodied car. These were galvanised body shells.

@@jamesbaggaley1460 Absolute rubbish. I wash our e46 thoroughly and in time it’s rotted just like they all do. And no, they were not galvanised.

Absolutely nothing here that would suggest to scrap a low mileage car. I've seen 5 year old land rovers with worse. The new civic look like this underneath within a year in some cases. A capable garage with a reasonable hourly rate would have this solved easy enough.
