great to see Bastion continuing to develop new parts...have been waiting to be able to afford one....saw a bike in the flesh in London a couple of years ago, when the wait would have been 3-4 months...10 months now sounds really long....hope they can ramp up production to get those waits down....

I wish Magnesium alloys become more mainstream for bike parts. "Mag" wheels for sportscars means they are made of magnesium. The GenV dodge viper also uses a magnesium alloy firewall. It is also used as structural material for aircraft. Magnesium would be cheaper than titanium and carbon, and would be lighter than aluminium.

I was hoping to consider a Bastion bike in the future. But wanted to fit mechanical rim brake. So looks like that is not an option. 😥

this didn't age well, poor Australian pursuit team got bamboozled by all the marketing, I bet Alex Porter would have preferred non titanum bars

Is that to say that the combination costs AU$1.500 - or AU$1.500 above the already very expensive Enve fork-stem-handlebar combination?
@Fetucinee
@Fetucinee 3 жыл бұрын
This is what I understood. The $1500 AU is not the price, it's the premium. This is definitely not your bike to take to the beer store for a six pack. ;-)

Woops. I'm assuming the failure came from the lever generated by being stretched over the aerobar extensions.

Interesting to see that 3D printing titanium is holding up, half expected the process to be unpredictable and too time-consuming for production runs, but hearing James say aftermarket might be something they do in the future makes me think they have it figured out.
@global_nomad.
@global_nomad. 3 жыл бұрын
not sure why you would think it was unpredictable?
@JWH.Design
@JWH.Design 3 жыл бұрын
@@global_nomad. depending on the production (printing) methodology you're effectively bonding grains of titanium powder together. So variances in material and layer adhesion can make the process "unpredictable"

Stunning aesthetics. The transitions across materials are superbly executed. Regarding the cockpit's carbon handlebar flats, I wonder if the benefits--a few less grams?--warrant the extra complexity of integrating carbon into the design. Why not make the cockpit all Ti? Perhaps Bastion wants to maintain a uniform aesthetic across the board.

I remember other Ti builders claiming that a Ti bar is too noodly soft at the same weight class. When it is made stiff enough, it adds too much weight to the front end. That's why there are a lot of Ti Bars for tourers where front weight does not mean much, especially with all the bike packing. I tried a Ti bar on my XC bike and it didn't feel "locked in" in terms of steering quality and response/feedback. That said, I am sure they can pull it of with minimum extra weight and internal lattice.

It is for a multitude of reasons, weight, performance, ride quality, aesthetics, cost, production capacity, etc. But definitely it aligns with our ethos of using carbon fibre for long straight sections. 3D printing Titanium is a less efficient way of producing those parts and would result in a more expensive, lower performing product.

A nice bit of engineering, glad to see it, not really liking the fork though. But, it seems it is only for a certain bike build and unfortunately would be a very expensive high end bike. Sorry but $11,000 is what my latest bike cost me and that is as high as I would ever go, in fact I really did not want to spend that much but that's where it ended up. I have the ControlTech Timania bars and stem which are good enough at almost $600 US.

I was really excited to see this, till I found out they still only do fork rakes that are the same as everyone else's. Kind of wonder why do "custom" at that point.
@bastioncycles9919
@bastioncycles9919 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry just saw this comment, whilst we do still use traditional rakes like 45 or 50 on some geometries, we have used every mm increment from 43 up and even ventured to 54 or 55 when needed, especially on smaller frames. Hardly the same as everyone else’s. But the point is for many people actually 45 or 50 IS the right rake.

@@bastioncycles9919 thanks for the Reply! It's funny how much can change in 10 months :) since I posted that comment, I went ahead and got a custom Ti fork made as a prototype, and started working with a carbon manufacturer to make my own forks :) I figured if no one was going to make any low rake forks that were appropriate for the steeper head angles, I'd make my own :)
