Many KZbinrs perform the measurement for squareness but I've never seen anyone before show what to do if it's not square. Respect.

A massive thank you for this. I had glued up a large mitre joint on a cabinet and realised afterwards I had not set the joint to 90 degrees. I thought there was nothing I could do.... until I watched your video. I have the same heat gun which I used on the MDF panel. It started to scorch a bit but then, just like manic, the bond came apart. I couldn’t believe it. I reset the joint to the correct angle and it made my day! Thanks again!

I’m so happy it worked for you! I have never tried it with mdf. Was there any chip out at the break point? I’m not surprised by the scorching, my guess it is the bonding agent in the mdf or just the fact it is made up of small particles. Anyway glad you could fix your project!

Thank you sir. This makes sense. It certainly works on those silly price tags the box stores slap on all the lumber, but I’d never tried it to release the glue in a wood joint. I needed to today and it did the trick. Thank you again.

Ah, thanks! I was looking for something to undo a once loose chair that a friend "helped" me re-glue... Thought I would have to find some chemical to dissolve it, not knowing that it has themo-plastic properties. Tanks, the chair is straight and strong again!

I knew what your solution would be because by accident I had a lightbulb moment years ago. I'm glad you shared on this video. I'm selfish and too lazy to have a YT channel. PVA is a plastic so like most plastics they soften. I use hot glue as well for an extra hand. I'm enjoying your channel. New subscriber.

Thanks for posting. My problem is vastly different but I hope for similar outcome. I have storage bay doors on our motorhome which consist of a sandwich of plastic, Styrofoam (white), and filon(thin fiberglass sheet)or plastic(like abs or PVC), all held together inside an aluminum extruded 4 part frame which is screwed together with some kind of adhesive( I think the brand is Stika, but not 100% sure) The Stika place(that manufactures and sells it) said I might could get it to let go with a heat gun but it would probably make a gooey mess. These doors are 30"w x 46"L x 1 1/2" thick and have delaminated in spots. New doors are 600.00 + the cost of painting them and our doors are in perfect paint condition, so I'm hoping I can get these apart. Thanks again for your video.

What is the frame screwed into? Could you try acetone to get it release? You can use a plastic scraper to try and pry it off as you heat it as well.

Foolishly made some drawers for a nightstand build and skimped on making sure the drawer boxes were square. Just about done with the build and now realizing these out of squaree drawers will not work. Hopefully this technique works on Titebond III. Ugh, when taking shortcuts comes back to bite you in the ass.

Did it work ? If so how long did u do heat gun for
@lexdiamond20
@lexdiamond20 5 ай бұрын
@@Patron77770 Yes, worked perfectly. Technique was heating a corner until the glue was soft enough to fit a thin metal spackle blade in. Kept wiggling the space slowly as heat was still allied to open the joint even more. When I was able to fit my fingers in, they replaced the blade. Slowly opened the joint even more until I was able to slowly pull it apart entirely. Had to do this 4 times as I needed to fix 4 drawers. Lesson learned to not take shortcuts and make sure your joints are aware. Also, make sure to keep the heat gun at the correct distance from the piece. Enough to heat it but not scorch the wood. And this was 1/4" plywood I was separating from 3/4"; butt jointed. Not too sure how it would go with so a 1" maple or walnut mortise and tenon joint. But then again, I would take my time making drawers if they were built with expensive hardwood lol

It isn't always the fastest, but it in my experience eventually it does let go. Other than trying this, I haven't found any other way that works as cleanly.

Any suggestions on separating glued wood that's been bonded together for 15 years? I want to use a bed frame that has rails for slates and I have a stand alone metal mattress platform to use instead. Hope that is understandable.

Let me know how it works. I’ve only tried this with newer glues. I’m usually the source for the wrong and this has gotten me out of some bad spots. Be careful though if the finish is important and this technique also works very well for stripping finish.

Great video! About how long did you apply heat?
@SoWeBoughtaHouse
@SoWeBoughtaHouse Жыл бұрын
Hi Chris - It took less than a minute on that joint. It could vary with the glue type. If you want to test the amount of heat and time, you can take a piece of scrap wood and let a glob of glue dry on it. Once it is dry hit it with the heat gun and see how long it takes to soften and get pliable. It is also a good way to make sure the heat won't burn your workpiece.

When I made the video I only had a Titebond II Joint, but I did some test on rabbit joint with Titebond III and was able to break it, but it took about twice as long under heat. Maybe two minutes on that joint. I hope that helps.

@@SoWeBoughtaHouse Yes, this is very helpful. Thank you for the answer! I care not so much about the time (fixing such mistakes should not be too often, after all), but more about the quality and the chance to break everything. As far as I can see, the adhesion of the glue to the traces of cured clue is very bad, so I would need to remove it all cleanly, before gluing again. Is that right? Was that possible?
@SoWeBoughtaHouse
@SoWeBoughtaHouse Жыл бұрын
@@Micro-Moo Hi Moo Moo. If you can completely remove the piece you can scrap the glue off with something like a card scraper or lightly sand. In the demo I did it was a carcass so I just needed to move the piece and could reinforce with screws,. One thing to be carefeul of in the heat can make a board cup if you have it on too long. Ig I make a bad mistake, I make another test joint out of scrap and try the heat gun to see what happens. You can test the time, change the temperature, make sure you don't cup or damage the wood in any other way before trying the final piece. the bad news is after all that you still might need to do soome reworking, but at least you don't need to start over. If you have any other question or something comes up, feel free to send me a message.
