I miss Tom Durkin so much! His call of the Classic race on 2001 was a Gift to The U.S.A and racing fans around the world.

I still have an AP photo of Tiznow and Sakkee inside the 1/16 pole. Tiznow was looking at Sakkee as if to say...”There’s no way I’m going to let you win this race!” Sure enough, ducked over to his left, picked up his knees a little higher, and tried a little harder. Tiznow just plain refused to lose. One gutsy stretch drive.

What a great race this renewal of the Breeders Cup Classic was! With the events of 9-11, Americans were badly in need of something to feel good about again and the mighty Tiznow provided it for them that day at Belmont Park. On the flip side of that same coin, kudos to the fantastic race that the European shipper Sakhee ran that day also. What Sakhee very nearly accomplished, having won the G1 Prix De l'Arc de Triomphe over 12f on turf at Longchamp and then coming within mere inches of winning the G1 Breeders Cup Classic over 10f on conventional dirt just weeks later was not only incredible but unheard of.

The greatest call and greatest Breeders Cup Classic ever. Tiznow, one of the gamest horses ever. Hat tip to Sakhee for making that stretch drive so memorable and bringing out the best in Tiznow.

Was there. Had purchased BC tix before 9/11. Very eerie and different atmosphere than the Belmont I had just attended the June before the attacks. Witnessed one of the greatest stretch runs ever and race calls ever.

I had forgotten who the jockey was on Sakhee, and then I saw him whip the crap out of his horse right to the wire, and I said, yup, that's the cruel wop Frankie Dettori.

Hats off to Sakhee and the jockey. From turf to dirt, a 12 furlong specialist, run on a shorter 10 furlong on foreign soil where the winner (via a nose) was born and trained to run on dirt all his racing life.

Damn, all kinds of narrative breaks in the showing of the race. Somewhat like a lousy movie with a couple dozen flashbacks, as though that will make it a good movie. Can we just see the race without the Moses Down From The Mountain fawning all over this wonderful horse?
