Every time I rewatch the greenhouse scene I remember the interview when Moffat said it wasn't possible to include a discussion about the characters' sexuality in the show, because that topic just wouldn't come up naturally. And then they went and made a whole episode where the action takes place in Sherlock's imagination, just so that they could have an excuse for that discussion. You gotta love Mofftiss. :)

Dear Rebekah and TJLCers, I want to thank you all for introducing me to the beautiful love story that is BBC Sherlock. I won't be addressing the fourth season, because this should be a place for kindness. But you have tought me so much about good writing and the importance of LGBT representation, through your passion and caring for the show and its characters. I will never stop believing and am very grateful for being part of the TJLC community, even if it was only for the past two months.

Hey! I don't know if this has been pointed out, ever, before, but I remember reading a quote somewhere in which ACD says that if in a 100 years he is only known as the author of Sherlock Holmes, he will be very disappointed, or some such other negative emotion. This video got me thinking, specifically the unreliable narrator bit in the beginning, about what if he meant that he'd be disappointed if no one identified his pioneering (?) work in inserting all the homosexual subtext he did in his stories, and only ended up thinking of him as merely the author of yet another series of "normal" story telling. Maybe, he too, like John Watson, had to conceal details, and this statement was just his way of saying that he hoped that there would indeed be a time in the future that his works could be seen for what they really were, and not considered to be just a story to be taken at face value. I hope you see this. I know it's a random comment on a video posted long ago but I couldn't message you on tumblr like i did once before. So...yeah...I know it has been ages since this video was released, but I'm only now making my way through your series, which, may i just say, is BRILLIANT. Thank you for doing it with the level of attention to detail and dedication that you do and for making it so pleasant for believers by organising and researching the facts so damn well and simultaneously making it hopefully eye-opening and damn near impossible to NOT believe for non-believers. I hope that last sentence with the multiple negatives and ridiculous structure, and the rest of this comment, makes sense. I'd love to hear - or rather read - what you think about the ACD quote angle, or if you and other qualified, and well-read people in terms of canon think it could have any merit to begin with at all. Much Love.

'Watson, I owe you a thousand apologies' and 'We've shared the same room for some years, and it would be amusing if we ended by sharing the same cell' are two lines from the canon that live in my head rent free. Also, the two lines that finally made them ship Sherlock and John in the canon and thus, entered me in a rabbithole of Johnlock in BCC Sherlock. Oh btw, even if canon Sherlock wasn't gay, he was clearly not straight. He might be aro/ace but not straight, not at all attracted to women. Watson repeatedly states that Sherlock hates women but it is clearly just in the context of romantic/sexual attraction because like, he clearly respects intelligent or working women and doesn't like it when women are abused or taken advantage of. That's not a 'I hate women' move, that's a 'not interested in women' move.

The canon was published in a magazine and everyone believed Watson‘s lies. Moriarty‘s „I read it in the papers so it must be true“ might be the writers referring to that

Great video! :D And I love your green carnation! Doyle's books are SO gay tbh. The show made me read the books (I have a shitty memory for dates but somehow I remember I've read them in January 2014. :o) ), I re read them regularly ever since (which is something I usually never do), the subtext is so rich, it's just amazing, I'm so happy you did a video about it! :D If it interest anyone, here's a website I use as a reference for the canon subtext: www.nekosmuse.com/withlovesh/?cat=3 , there is also this by the same person: www.nekosmuse.com/sherlockholmes/decodingthesubtext.pdf this is really interesting, and even though this analysis is very detailed there is still things to discuss and to work about, these stories are so amazing. And on a little note: I don't think Doyle was as inconsistent as people think he was, because he took care of little details with such precision I really doubt he just mistaken dates or his characters names. Like, for the anecdote, Doyle calculated the length of his short stories, so the time it took to read them matched exactly with the duration of the travel from one London train station to the other - sadly I can't remember the station's names (I think there was Paddington, but I can't be sure, I'll have to re listen to the program in which I heard it, if it can still be found, that was on a History program on French radio), but I guess that was two of the most frequently used at the time. So, really, to me, a man who is capable of calculating that is clearly able to be consistent with dates. And my final proof is that a logical and plausible explanation can be found for each inconsistency. Fox explained it well with the "Mary problem". Anyway, I tend to think these inconsistencies are intentional.

but isn't the romanticism that holmes refers to in the sign of four the love story in the second part of a study in scarlet? you know, the tragic love story between lucy ferrier and jefferson hope? i always thought that holmes was criticising what everybody else seems to be criticising about the novels: that the middle part takes away the focus from holmes and watson and the actual mystery that people are intrigued by.

One sort of adaptation that i have yet to see any JohnLock shipper mention is that of Data and Geordi as Sherlock and Watson respectively, in Star Trek The Next Generation. Data and Geordi themselves are very blatantly another closet couple, though only because of the people paying for the shows at the time - as opposed to being closeted because the societies the stories take place in were homophobic, and it was seen as very fitting (by other characters in the show as well as fans) that they were the ones who constantly played as Sherlock and Watson in the holodeck. Along with that, their version of Moriarty was extremely calm and proper compared to other versions - he didn't stood in the way of the couple at all and had a healthy relationship himself, yet he was still a genius who could be interpreted as a villain without going overboard. That is to say, their (future) Moriarty was not at all opposed to homosexuality and so Sherlock and Watson/Data and Geordi were completely free to be together, simply because it all was recreated in the far future when most cultures had no problem with homosexuality either. There are also a lot of other parallels in both Star Trek, Data and Geordi and of course Kirk and Spock which relate to Sherlock Holmes - such as Data having a brother he didn't get along with, Geordi having a sister he didn't contact often, Geordi being the more "human" of them and giving Data feelings in every sense of the phrase, Geordi being a sort of doctor to Data, Data's seemingly emotional detachment in most cases (except when it involved Geordi), etc. And also John being initially portrayed as having a "disability" just like Geordi was initially portrayed as being "blind". I think that tells us a lot about JohnLock as well, even if maybe moffat and gatiss may not know about this particular representation of the characters. Also, Spock once said he was related to Sherlock Holmes somehow - Data was "the new Spock" in TNG - Spock and Kirk are confirmed cannon as well, so basically...it's all gay :)

I actually think some people back during that time DID get it. Not everyone back then, just as now, was on the homophobic bandwagon. I'm sure many read it for what it was, and loved it as it was, but it wasn't as if they could talk about it openly. Also, this can tie into the "Mary Morstan being completely fabricated to hide their relationship" theory. Imagine someone close to Doyle actually telling him, perhaps knowing already, perhaps not, that the romance between them was actually getting to the point where it wasn't subtext anymore. (Seriously read the canon guys, I don't know how anyone could misread some of those lines, I mean come on.) As we all know that was extremely dangerous back then. Solution? Mary Morstan.

It actually makes a lot of sense that Watson was never canonically married. In HLV we find out that Mary isnt really named Mary at all, so hers and johns marriage isn't actually legitimate. The writers must have picked up on the canon that Watson never actually names his wife and used that in their adaptation to prove that he isn't actually that in love with Mary to officially marry her....maybe because he loves Sherlock?? ;)
Hi Rebekah! I was gonna send you an ask on tumblr but couldn't so you probably turned them off to get a break from them :) Anywho, I've got a question for you. Is it generally thought (among TJLC fans) that Sherlock is a virgin in the show?
@teddy97707 жыл бұрын
The TJLC community would prefer Sherlock to be a virgin. The only possible candidate for an intimite partner in the BBC show is Irene Adler (people like to think they shagged after he saved her from being executed), but that doesn't match our idea of Sherlock being gay. He could have had sex before the events of the show, but he was so emotionally unattainable when it started, that this is rather unlikely. Furthermore, Mycroft points out in 'Scandal of Belgravia' that Sherlock wouldn't know whether sex could 'alarm' him, hinting that he knows that Sherlock has no sexual experience. He also didn't sleep with Janine, deliberately risking his plans of bringing her to heel. The truth is, that we don't know for sure. What we know is that he (at least in BBC's adaptation) has sexual urges and gives in to them, because his folder in Magnussen's head said his 'porn preferences' were 'normal', whereas other characters' such as Mrs. Hudson's said 'none'.
@shivanitelang77602 жыл бұрын
@@teddy9770 Even Benedict Cumberbatch said that Sherlock slept with Irene after that incident...Personally I wasn't convinced about it that much because they never implied it through any symbolisms Or between the lines that he did that during the episode... Moreover everyone on this show (writers, actors, etc... including Martin Freeman) have lied so many times before so it doesn't really feel quite true. I don't know what to believe. I'm a TJLC supporter myself but I was really confused when I found Cumberbatch's statement in his interviews
@christinabeyer92982 жыл бұрын
@@shivanitelang7760 Please don't take so much care of that "statement." It wasn't meant serious. ELLE UK: Would you like Sherlock to shag Molly? BC: No! ELLE UK: Would you like Sherlock to shag anyone? BC: Oh he has. He shagged Irene Adler. They definitely got it on that night they had together when he rescued her from a beheading [laughs]. ELLE UK: "No they didn’t." BC: "Well that’s for me to know and you to not know." Benedict laughed after he said it.
