Күн бұрын

In Today's episode of TJLC Explained I talk about some of the common romantic devices that have made their way onto Sherlock. Spoilers: there are A Lot of them. Maybe I should try a different approach...
TJLC stands for The Johnlock Conspiracy and is the idea that the writers of BBC Sherlock have intended for John and Sherlock to end up in a relationship together since the start.

Also, I recommend HIGHLY "The Hero With 1000 Faces" by Joseph Campbell, he writes about a story template as old as humanity which underlies SO MANY of our most beloved stories, movies, tv shows, etc., not just ancient myths. ASIP is a TEXTBOOK hero-journey, it's GORGEOUS. (and I think the overall arc of the series is too)

So I'm currently watching Sherlock with my family. They've never seen it, I've just recently decided to share it with them so they know what I'm talking about all the time lol. But we just finished HLV and when the "John Watson is definitely in danger..." part came and Sherlock heroically began to struggle up the stairs to John my whole family went "AWWW" and I was just shaking with laughter muttering "he's so gay" into a pillow. Then I turned to my sister and announced "I freaking hate this show" and she just looked really confused

This is one of my favourite TJLCE videos! Once you actually realise how many classic romantic tropes are used between John and Sherlock, it's ridiculous how cheesy the show becomes. Brilliantly done, as always! :)

It finally happened. I actually believe in TJLC now. Omg. What am I going to do with my life till January. This was such a great episode. Thinking about Sherlock in a narrative structure point of view makes so much sense. The tipping point for me, after everything, was realizing what the tarmac scene TEXTUALLY said. Naysayers can scream all they want that all we have is subtext. But Sherlock had already told John he loved him at the wedding, he used the word love. What could he POSSIBLY have to say at the tarmac if not clarifying love as romantic? There is literally nothing. There's zero things. That's text. Omg. TJLC i real. My life. My brain omg.

i rewatched this, and thought something: the way in princess bride the grandfather tries to 'save' the grandson from the last kiss, and the grandson demands to hear about it paralles eerily about the s4 and the "ending" of the series: wild adventures and no 'icky' romance. i have no idea why the long wait (there was a theory about the latest of sherlock homes stories to becoming public domain being the reason). but i really think that making a fake ending (like doyle killed sherlock off and then brought him back when the audience wasn't satisfied) is to contrast that without sherlock and john's romance the story isn't complete.

actually, in the pre-court mirror Held Gaze scene from TRF Sherlock and John aren't looking at each other - Sherlock is the one to look at John when John is looking at himself, but when John's eyes move towards him, Sherlock's gaze moves to himself as if he wasn't looking. these are very minimal eye movements that require much much focus but it's there. idk i think it makes it much sadder :(

Honestly, I agree with you a hundred percent. However, I'm afraid that due to pressure from other stakeholders, they may never do it. Is there any way we can believe otherwise? Because, at the end of the day, this is a huge risk for many people! Will the benefits outweigh the risk? I'm afraid that they might leave it deliberately ambiguous. However, at this point, no matter how they end the show, it will anger a huge chunk of people. The only way they can avoid that is if they leave it ambiguous so people can believe what they choose to. I really really want to believe it, but I'm too scared to. Help!

I totally see Johnlock but I fear Mrs M has a point. BBC may want to see LGBC people happy but by now the show is sold to and hugely popular in so many countries which are far from gay friendly. And you know money could maybe change the formerly wanted way the show takes. I fear Mofftiss perhaps are not allowed anymore to ship Johnlock openly and without a doubt... so I really really hope Mofftiss and BBC will stay strong and let the show and our boys go to what it's all meant to be!

maithri swamy honestly, The writers NEED to reveal the the story of johnlock because if they don't, they will be just one more brilliant show that threw away what could have made it glorious and possibly go down in history. Inaccurate representative is still alive in media today, so they should make a stand and let the story be told the way it's meant. Both actors I beilive have played a gay character at least one in their Carrers before so they should not have a problem with even a small kiss for a scene. Even if johnlock simply said 'I love you John/Sherlock.' It should be enough for it to be satisfying. Netflix just uploaded the fourth season and I am scared to watch it.

Love the videos! My parents are very persistent that Sherlock isn't a gay love story, and I used to believe them. I'd blow off every suspicion I had, because as a gay woman, I thought it wasn't right to be telling a gay love story as public as Sherlock. When I was younger, if I ever (I mean ever) brought up my sexuality, my mom said I was "getting on a soap box." She said the same thing about the possibility of Sherlock being gay. Now, I couldn't believe more in your message. I'm confident my parents are wrong about Sherlock, and that someday soon, they'll be watching the wonderful episode when John and Sherlock finally get together and they'll be baffled at how a story they were convinced was perfectly straight turned out to be gay. Thank you so much for helping me believe!

I would like to add that I think the tarmac scene could be compared to when the Grandpa stops the story at first before the boy tells him to continue. Sherlock leads the audience to believe there will be a confession, hints at a kiss (Mycroft certainly thinks there will be), but there is none because they haven't resolved everything yet. Unlike in Princess Bride John and Sherlock still have demons to slay before they can get to the kiss they've been waiting so long for. It could also signify how the audience is ready for a kiss now, a lot of people have come to realize that John and Sherlock's relationship is so meaningful that there needs to be a confession of some sort to finish their characters arches. I'm so excited for season 4.

Oh god, all these tropes. So many. I think someone once calculated the average time of the show in relation to romantic tropes and the result was one romantic trope every nine minutes. Of course that was before TAB, so we're probably down to like seven minutes now. I have been waiting for that particular comparsion since you started this series and I was not disappointed. I still remember seeing that tumblr post about "Character A and B" and then "Now, did I just describe the plot of Sherlock or...?" And I sat there and screamed. Bless you for all the amazing work you do, Rebekah. Also, that new intro is great and you are so adorable!

To be honest, the comparison between The Princess Bride and Sherlock was the deciding reason that convinced me at 100% that Johnlock is canon and won't be disowned to the very end of the show. It would be an awkward coincidence for Moffat, stating so vehemently that he loves this movie/book and putting whole plot lines of it into Sherlock, not intending to put the meaning of these tropes in, too, I mean: By creating, you would normally realise those things, wouldn't you. xD (Well, as for me, I do.) Btw, it's kind of cute how the little boy represents the homophobic/blind audience. Just perfect reference.

This is great. Incidentally, I think I may have already read up on all the things you mentioned in this episode, but it was still great fun to watch. I'm basically addicted to this series and the joy of TJLC. There's one thing I wonder, though. I've heard in the past about Victorian fans of the original series (which I'm reading, by the way), but I'd love to know more about it. What I know is that when Holmes died, they were black bands and inundated Doyle with fanmail until he brought Holmes back. I also know they wrote stage plays and put them on, and even put a few seconds of him on film when the technology was first invented. What I wondered was if there were any sources available that you know of that addresses the reaction of fans during the original canon. I'm not sure that it could be linked to TJLC in particular, but I've been looking, and have only found a few scattered bits. I'm probably not great at research, anyway.

Those last few sentences of yours about how everyone would easily see the lovestory in the show if it was a straight lovestory left my crying because you are so utterly right. And I am sometimes so angry at that. All the people go "but The Woman" or "but he kisssed Molly and Janine" ... and I just want to scream in frustration and say why on earth do you see but do not observe???If this would be a heterosexual lovestory you all would clearly pick up on the fact that all of this women mean nothing at all to Sherlock in a romantic way. And NO Sherlock is not asexual as well. Cause again if it would not be a gay love you would recognise all the looks, the intimacy, the want and longing between John and Sherlock for what they are and meant to be. Not only friendships but also love and sexual desire. Johnlock is so plain to see. So obvious in front of us. How can people just not see it??? Do they watch another show then me? And if you only choose to not see it because you don't want it to be a gay lovestory... even worst simply because you don't like it ... than hell yes. You most definitely should go and see another show. Cause this awesome show is full of homosexual and bisexual characters. And everybody in the show is just fine about it. And damn that is what society should feel about it: it's all fine. P.s. As English is not my mother language I hope this is understandable.

It's funny how some things are noticed very late in an episode. If you stop the scene where John talks to Billy from the "hounds of Baskerville" at the counter (5:55) you can see the words "Vacancies" and "Hancock's" put into focus. interesting

I really loved this one. Not only because I have seen so many of the romantic tropes myself on this show but mainly because I adore The princess bride and actually hadn't heard this connection before. :)

20:34 I can see this scene over and over and over again.. my gosh is SO ROMANTIC!! The music... the hero scene... He's actually and literally came back from death for John, people. For John.

There's also another parallel: after "dying", Westley came back to Buttercup in a disguise, just as Sherlock did when coming back to John wearing that tuxedo and a painted-on mustache. :) and the mustache looks so similar, too! haha

Please marry me. Thank you for pointing all this out, finally I've something to show my dad that John and Sherlock loving each other is real. But in all seriousness you are very very beautiful, you seem like such a joyful person, definitely gonna subscribe !

Ahh Rebekah!!! I never get tired of The Princess Bride/Sherlock parallels, I love that movie!! :D I'm so glad you included it because I wanted people to SEE it SO bad and my little vids only have like 400 views ^,^ So thanks again for being a public face for our fandom, I can't stress that enough!!

I just watched your Sherlock Spoiled vids and they are AWESOME! I haven't seen a lot of the movies you lifted lines from, but it doesn't matter, your skill at matching the lines with the scenes is amazing! The ones I did see, you have clearly carefully chosen matching SCENES, not just any scene you could paste the lines onto. WOW.

And I'm so scared it won't happen. I've seen an add, in which Sherlock says "I love you", and I'm so terrified of if they're going to do something to make it not happen, or to not happen quite right... I'm just so scared... So very scared it physically hurts...

I know right?! It's absolutely terrifying to me as well. It feels almost like this will be a tease but it wouldn't make sense, they've been leading up to this moment, I just hope they're not fooling, I will actually freaking sob if JohnLock becomes a real thing I will be that happy... heres hoping that this new series brings Sherlock and John's feelings to light.

Hi there, I know you've finished making this video series. But just wanted to let you know that whatever the future holds for BBC Sherlock, this series you made is a total masterpiece. This video in particular is a great example of one of the many really solid and evidenced queer readings of the show. There is still no other reading of the show that makes sense. These videos will have a really positive legacy in years to come.

Brilliant job Rebekah!! Speaking of parallels, there's also Vastra and Jenny from Doctor Who, I really hope to see your analysis on their relationship someday (both characters were written by Moffat) :) Thank you so much for all the hard work you put in these videos, never before I realized how much alike The Princess Bride and Sherlock actually are, what a nice surprise
