Welcome back to another episode of TJLC Explained! In this video I talk about everyone's least favorite episode, The Blind Banker. Hopefully I make a good case for why it's less terrible than you think.
TJLC stands for The Johnlock Conspiracy or the belief that the writers of BBC Sherlock have intended for John and Sherlock to end up in a romantic relationship since the start.

7437 is John's PIN - a passcode that is equivalent to SHER (of I am SHER locked). If that doesn't show you how well the writers have prepared this, nothing will.

Ahh Soo Lin did leave because she was getting 'unwanted attention' but it was really from those badies, not the guy who liked her. Like how Sherlock had left after TRF because of Moriarty. It reminds me of the waterfall scene in TAB when John says to Moriarty, "I do believe [Sherlock] finds your attention a shade annoying"!!

Aside from Sherlock just being happy about being able to make others happy in the scene towards the end with the secretary, I've always found this scene especially poignant when he says "didn't know its value, just thought it would suit you." And then the camera immediately cuts to John after explaining how much it's worth.... Aka, Sherlock didn't realize how important and vital to his life John would be when they first met, he just thought he would make a good roommate/partner in solving crimes but he's at least starting to understand now. Every conversation he has with the secretary actually could be seen as her being a parallel for John in this episode, with him not feeling appreciated every time Sherlock is trying to do things on his own (or so he perceives anyway).

When John says "Why, why? What are you doing?" at 22:25 he sounds confused, but also so hopeful? Maybe this is just my view of it, but I can imagine his heart rate has picked up.

Okay but the part about Moriarty and Mycroft being controlled by a female leader is actually right because, sure enough, Eurus shows up in season 4. it wasn't Mary who was the secret mastermind after all.
@christinabeyer9298
@christinabeyer9298 4 жыл бұрын
Right. And Eurus was the real head behind the "Miss me" campaign. Eurus wasn't Moriarty's tool, it was the exactly opposite. Eurus was in truth always the real mastermind and leader behind Moriarty.
@jamesofglory
@jamesofglory 4 жыл бұрын
@@christinabeyer9298 Yeah exactly, imo I really like that they didn't totally villainise Mary bc she was a kickass lady even if she was shady. Eurus as the female leader behind the whole scheme works well too bc she's acc related to My and Sherlock. Moftiss are arrogantly decent writers at the best of times but they did something fairly interesting w the concept
@christinabeyer9298
@christinabeyer9298 4 жыл бұрын
@@jamesofglory Yes, I you can like Mary or not, but I've never saw her as a villain, a totally bad one, yes she was an assassin and super agent, and it could be possible that she worked for Moriarty someday and was one of his snipers at the pool in Tgg. Mary was a freelancer, she worked certainly for more people who needed her "help". But a criminal mastermind like Moriarty or Eurus? Nope, not at all. And the "M" at the end of the episode stood in my opinion for Moriarty, not Mary. The plan to burn out the heart of Sherlock was in reality from Eurus and Moriarty acted probably since Tgg on her behalf. Eurus to Sherlock in Tfp: "Moriarty always wanted revenge, and his revenge is obviously me." Makes sense. Moriarty always acted on Eurus' behalf. Sherlock: "Five minutes. She only needed five minutes to do this all to us."

that`s my problem with most (typical Hollywood) movie romances, all so boring and un-realistic. They just meet and being attractiv people and have a Happy end together like this will be the Love of there lifes. It's just useless , when the Story/movie is not bad at all. Like something that "must be" in the Movie for some special audience.

Wonderful! I love as well how they both couldn't see the ~code~ at the same time, until John took a picture of it on his "phone" and showed it to Sherlock then. It's quite a lovely nod to the phone = heart metaphor, where they might not be able to see their actions and code in the real world, but they definitely exist on their hearts. Thanks again!

I'd just like to point out the irony that Sherlock considers himself to be a 'high-functioning sociopath', yet sociopathy is most common in business executives like Sebastian. Also, Seb's disregard for the murder further pushes the idea that he is somewhat sociopathic. Meanwhile, Sherlock obviously cares for the people around him. Is it possible that Seb is a foil for Sherlock?

I just wanted to say yet again that I admire the effort you put into these videos. I can't (and probably don't want to) imagine how long all the editing must take. To be honest, I never rewatched TBB before because I always thought it was "that episode that didn't go well" so today was the first time that I went back to it since getting into TJLC. I was quite fascinated at what I've seen there before (nothing much) and what I'm connecting now. Now I just see tea in Sherlock and start thinking whether the polishing symbolic was about Sherlock or about gay love in general and someone talking like this when I was first watching it... Somehow I understand the frustration of the casual viewer, we have to sound crazy to them. And I nearly died laughing at 32:36. Didn't expect that.

wow, I can't count how many times I've watched this episode, and how many metas about it i've already read, and I still learned and noticed new stuff here! One thing I picked up on even before discovering meta on tumblr, was that ASIP is structured like a TEXTBOOK Hero's Journey, all 12 steps, the whole call to adventure, threshold guardians, etc etc. right up to the "return with the elixir" at the end. What I'm now picking up on is that, like so many of the individual episodes, it acts like a template for the whole show. In the big picture, ASIP is the "ordinary world" and the call to adventure. TBB is the refusal of the call, and then renewal / acceptance of it. I'd say the pool scene in TGG is crossing a threshold. ASIB, tests allies & enemies; THOB approaching the cave; TRF the ordeal, or one of them anyway. I think S3 cycles back through some of the "special world" steps. It makes sense, since the structure is common to *many, many* stories, that it would apply equally to an individual episode and to the series as a whole.

I'm watching this videos for the first time (I didn't officially know TJLC theory until a couple of weeks. I mean I didn't know all this...) And I'm glad that I'm not the only one believing this. I think this episode is gold for who looks it closely, for all the reasons that you explained and because it show us the development of the relationship. Because they lie to each other (or, in fact, they do not to say anything to each other) like in the first minutes when Sherlock is fighting and do not tell John that, nor when he's killed on Soo lin's house, and in the End, when John sees the Chinese man painting the eye just in front of his appartment and dodn't tell Sherlock ... So Thanks, I love it when you do that thing with your hair (when you say "seriously" or so) hahah so cute.

I only recently learned of TJLC, and this series was one of the first explanations I found about what it is. I always shipped John Lock, but never dreamed it might become a reality. Thank you for making this in such detail, details which I often miss because I am unable to concentrate that closely to the show. I can not put into words how much I look foreword to these videos all week and I can only contain my excitement by re-watching the older videos during the week. These make me so happy and I truly think this world, and this fandom, needs a little more happiness. I appreciate all the time you put into watching the shows over and over to make these videos and the person who helps edit these to make it possible for us to view it so seamlessly. I sometimes think editors get neglected in thanks from the stance of the people making comments, so I wanted to put in my two cents. Thank you both so much, and please keep up the great work.

rewatching these and noticed one thing that's going to make me rant...blind banker is the only episode mycroft doesn't appear in (ish) even with the train wreck of a fourth season, I'm still convinced that rather than moriarty, mycroft is the main villain of the sherlock series, but not the usual "all i want is to kill/destroy the main character" type. He allows terrible things to happen for logical reasons, but sherlock constantly gets in his way. the way he was introduced, "M" is actually mycroft, and Mary worked for Mycroft all along (technically...which is another reason why John and Mary wouldn't be happy with him at their wedding, because she was the close eye he had on john) and is possibly the sniper at the end of this episode, but also worked for moriarty (in the pool, and someone would have had to watch sherlock jump to call off the other snipers in TRF). now im reaching here, but when we get to the TRF tea scene, moriarty refers to himself as the king, while mycroft is often associated with the queen (homophobic jokes + the painting in his office/lair). And later we get the line "Am i the king of england?" no, because there is no king, only the queen. From the same scene we also get the quote "no such thing as a private bank account now--they're all mine--no such thing as secrecy. I own secrecy" but moriarty didn't have the code, he used people. However we do see someone hack bank accounts and that was...(drumroll) Mycroft in ASiB, aka "the cia or secret service on a freelance basis." finally it makes still makes sense to me even though i so badly want to give up on this show that i poured my heart into, because mycroft/mark is the writer. and in the end just like how jiju kills soo lin, mycroft/mark (though i want to blame moffat the most) killed "sherlock"

I don't know if this is an error in production or deliberate, but all of the Asian characters in this episode are supposed to come from China, but they speak with a very Straits accent (people of Chinese ethnicity living in Singapore/Malaysia/Indonesia); none of them have a mainlander Chinese accent, which is very distinctive.

It sounds a bit like Cantonese to me, not Mandarin, and there are a lot of people that speak Cantonese in mainland China as well. If that's not Cantonese, it could also be a dialect. In China, people from different provinces or even different cities have their own dialect (accent). Only people in Beijing speak only Mandarin, in other cities, people speak Mandarin AND their own dialect.

6:24 I always thought John quickly saying "Colleague" after Sebastian remarks "Friend?" is because John doesn't want this douchebag Sebastian to think that John & Sherlock are boy"friends." It could be the usual "John doesn't like to be called gay" but I also think John senses Sebastian is a jerk who could hurt Sherlock (a la Anderson and Donovan).

Maybe (most likely) I missed something. But beyond indicating there'll be more layers of symbols and subtext (and ciphers) to be cracked, doesn't that last graffiti seen by John but not Sherlock look a little bit like an eye? As in I, as in I owe you?

lovely elaboration on TBB! was looking forward to this one (well, specifically to this one as I'm looking forward to all your videos) because yeah, it sort of is a 'boring' episode in light of the others but the foreshadowing of the series made it all worth it. hadn't come across meta touching on this yet, and it was fascinating to see it like this! I'll go look for some of that meta now. I was wondering though--you said sherlock and john ended up back together at 221B after the confrontation, do you see that as a foreshadowing for the series too? I'm pretty sure it is tbh, but I'm afraid it'll stay on ambiguous/platonic grounds, which I definitely hope they won't do. with all the stuff they've built up--especially in s3--there's no way they can end the series without addressing that, and NOT sherlock and john as best friends because s3 has exhausted that narrative (as lsit said, there's no other way for their relationship arc to go if it's just to stop at bffs). so I'm holding out for an unambigous/romantic end.

I think that even if the factor of TJLC would be omitted, it's not poor writing. I mean, after the initial interest (to get to know a new person) there's usually this phase of sobering up and possible first collisions. Especially with a person as eccentric as Sherlock clearly is.

Okay the scene where Sherlock says: "Look in his case, there was something packed tightly inside it." and John says: "Thanks, I'll take your word for it," and "I'm not desperate to look around some blokes dirty underwear." This gives me some hardcore sexual vibes, anyone else??? I had this feeling from watching the unaired pilot that suitcase meant something sexual. The creepy, sexual predator cabbie took her suitcase and discarded it. I thought maybe it referred to the person's sexuality in general. I tried looking it up but failed to find any meta on it. Is this an unsolved clue??? ALSOOOO does it not seem like John is overtly trying to hide some sexual frustration? He so desperately DOES what to look through one specific bloke's (I don't have to say Sherlock, do I? Okay, Sherlock is the bloke!) underwear but Sherlock keeps leaving him out of the sex, erm, I mean cases... This might tie in with the meta-analysis that these "locked-room" murders are symbols of Sherlock's locked heart? WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN??? Idk I'm just going off. Somebody help me I am new to meta-analysis. If anyone wants to shed some light on my struggle, PLEASE DO.

This isn't really johnlock related, but as far as I can remember, when Sherlock is telling Amanda about her affair and how he figured out from the hand cream she was gifted, Amanda touches the jade pin in her hair!!

Is there anything in particular that indicates Sherlock is rattled by John's 'colleague' comment (other than their following minor fall out in this episode)? He seems to glance at John for a moment after the comment is made but other than that it doesn't seem to have much of an effect on him.

Funny note about Sara Sawyer: Was re-reading "Study in Scarlet" recently, right after watching your video on Holmes canon and Watson as an unreliable narrator. In "Scarlet", Sara Sawyer is the name of an alias the killer uses to steal a piece of evidence from Holmes. SARA SAWYER DOES NOT EXIST.
