Agreed on that palm nailer, built a large deck in our back yard and the tie down straps it would have been hard to nail them in with the angle, that palm nailer saved me! That shelter looks more and more like a tank! Just what you’d want in a bad storm.

Very nice! My only suggestion would be to make something to latch the hinge side, something in the style of a safe (se Sturdy safes for inspiration). The door would be impossible to rip out then, now it is only the hinges holding it on one side.
@TKCL3 жыл бұрын
I've been thinking about that, but in reality three 3/4 inch bolts/hinges hold that side as well. It's highly unlikely our weak storms here in Florida could ever knock this door off.

The slab is 8 inches thick. I'm not done securing just yet. I'll be putting 4 earth augers into the ground and tie to those so it could never topple over. Yes that palm nailer is awesome!

@@TKCL Thanks for the reply, after seeing video of a tornado picking up and tossing semi-trailers around like rag dolls I was hoping there was some kind of tie down system in place. Wouldn't be any fun being inside that shelter as it was tossed across the field. Stay well, John
@TKCL4 жыл бұрын
We do not get very strong tornados here, and I would be doubtful of them turning the shelter over. With that said, might as well make for sure this could never happen and make it as secure as I can.

Watch putting those nails in the palm nailer! If you push a nail in it and it triggers the hammer it will shoot them out. Trust me I have done it. 😂. Put the nail on material then in hole of palm nailer!

I'm curious as to why you didn't lag bolt the tie-downs in?
@TKCL3 жыл бұрын
Because they came pre drilled and rated for nails. There's over 20 16d nails in each strap. That's a tremendous amount of hold down power, especially when you times that by all the straps in there.
@jeffreysmith2363 жыл бұрын
You did have to predrill holes in the concrete before nailing the brackets to the wall, right? Those anchors bolts were not self-tapping?

@TKCL3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I'm probably going to be in the neighborhood of 3000 once it's complete. Lumber prices are outrageous and not helping costs. Most metal and concrete shelters in this size were around 9k, way out of my budget.

The custom touches are nice and save money but ultimately they have delayed getting the project finished. I think there is a fine balance, particularly with something being built for the express purpose of safety. That bit of saved money would be all I could think about if something happened and I couldn't use the shelter
@TKCL3 жыл бұрын
The shelter has been ready to be used for the last several weeks. It's fully functionable as far as safety goes. The only reason it's not finished now is because my lack of being able to record for KZbin, I've had too much going on in the background with the house.
