Maybe Dad was on the right track. Sometimes telling your kids, "No." Is the best thing for them, shows the most love. Allowing your kids to eat themselves into morbid obesity, heart disease, diabetes and a whole host of other health problems isn't "love". Allowing them to eat to such an unhealthy weight without stopping them is no different from Allowing them to stick a fork in an electric outlet, you're Allowing them to possibly kill themselves either way. Physical or mental abuse isn't okay but not allowing your kids to scarf down McDonald's when they're already so heavy they can't breathe isn't Physical or mental abuse. I don't know what types of abuse, or what they deemed "abuse" specifically besides not allowing them to eat certain foods but while he may have been abusive in other ways he was doing the best thing for them not allowing them to eat whatever they wanted regardless of whether he did it for the right reasons. Their mother would have been doing them a favor by not allowing it either. There are plenty of ways to show love, reward your children and make meals they enjoy eating/do fun activities without unhealthy food and through healthy lifestyles. A child can enjoy vegetables as much as McDonald's if it's cooked right, cooked as a family and cooked with love. Parents have to be parents above all else and it's more important to be a PARENT instead of a friend and sometimes that involves telling your children No and recognizing unhealthy habits and stopping those habits whether your kids realize it's for the best at the time or not. You don't let your kids play in traffic whether they think it would be fun or not, not allowing them to eat themselves into oblivion because it tastes good is no different.

Gospel truth. Many addictions are fostered in the home. Disfunctional rearing,Heredity and environmental issues all play apart. We all fail at parenting in some way. This in an extreme in passive aberrant reward system gratification by the parent'(s). Addictions (including food) are mental health issues. Treatment protocols are life saving. I say this As a therapist who lost 200 pounds 18 yrs ago and maintained it. Very rarely do these love interests in early recovery end happily ever after. At least in my professional experience.

See this is why you don't completely deprive a child of some things. It may not be the healthiest thing. But if allowing them to have a small amount every once in a while and then teaching them why you need to limit those things, this type of situation won't happen. That's what I do with my kids. Keep them on a regular diet and then by allowing a little bit teaches them limiting but still enjoying a "treat"
