Maybe Dad was on the right track. Sometimes telling your kids, "No." Is the best thing for them, shows the most love. Allowing your kids to eat themselves into morbid obesity, heart disease, diabetes and a whole host of other health problems isn't "love". Allowing them to eat to such an unhealthy weight without stopping them is no different from Allowing them to stick a fork in an electric outlet, you're Allowing them to possibly kill themselves either way. Physical or mental abuse isn't okay but not allowing your kids to scarf down McDonald's when they're already so heavy they can't breathe isn't Physical or mental abuse. I don't know what types of abuse, or what they deemed "abuse" specifically besides not allowing them to eat certain foods but while he may have been abusive in other ways he was doing the best thing for them not allowing them to eat whatever they wanted regardless of whether he did it for the right reasons. Their mother would have been doing them a favor by not allowing it either. There are plenty of ways to show love, reward your children and make meals they enjoy eating/do fun activities without unhealthy food and through healthy lifestyles. A child can enjoy vegetables as much as McDonald's if it's cooked right, cooked as a family and cooked with love. Parents have to be parents above all else and it's more important to be a PARENT instead of a friend and sometimes that involves telling your children No and recognizing unhealthy habits and stopping those habits whether your kids realize it's for the best at the time or not. You don't let your kids play in traffic whether they think it would be fun or not, not allowing them to eat themselves into oblivion because it tastes good is no different.

Gospel truth. Many addictions are fostered in the home. Disfunctional rearing,Heredity and environmental issues all play apart. We all fail at parenting in some way. This in an extreme in passive aberrant reward system gratification by the parent'(s). Addictions (including food) are mental health issues. Treatment protocols are life saving. I say this As a therapist who lost 200 pounds 18 yrs ago and maintained it. Very rarely do these love interests in early recovery end happily ever after. At least in my professional experience.

@@finnyinfy they weight has to do with the way she raised them. Even tho they where abused by their father, they where also abused by their mother without even knowing. If you over feed an animal to obesity, its animal abuse, its not the animals fault, its the ones who's raising them. Now you could say its wrong to compare them with animals, but when you're young you have no self control and rely on your others to set bounderies, just like a dog with their owner, the dog will eat whatever the owner gives it, and so will a child. I know their mom wanted their children to be happy, and im sure their father did too, but they both failed, and now their both have severe health problems because of that. Mental problemas and addiction are a big cause for obesity, i myself had severe health problems because of that, i've got to weigh 120kg/ around 280l when i was 16, all because my parents failed to teach me self control and over fed me because food made me happy. Now till this day i struggle with food addiction, going to therapy and fighting it on a day to day basis, i just wanted to bring up the fact that this documentary fails to inform you about those kinds of topics. Compulsive overeating is an addiction similar to drugs and alcohol. Long term sustained weight loss is a life long journey.Intimate relationships early in treatment and recovery often fail for a myriad of codependency dynamics when both partners are struggling with an identical addiction. True, they seem to be lovely kind souls. Friendship is fine but a relationship may not serve them well in a recovery sense. I lost 200+ pounds 18 years ago and counsel other compulsive overeaters in a therapeutic setting.I certainly wish these two success and happiness.

See this is why you don't completely deprive a child of some things. It may not be the healthiest thing. But if allowing them to have a small amount every once in a while and then teaching them why you need to limit those things, this type of situation won't happen. That's what I do with my kids. Keep them on a regular diet and then by allowing a little bit teaches them limiting but still enjoying a "treat"

I was a fat kid growing up(I'm still fat) but 300lbs at 11? That's crazy. This is the saddest story I've seen on this show and that's saying a lot. I genuinely hope they can find the strength to help themselves live.

Muscles need and burn more energy so once you have built muscles (with of course proper protein intake) you're good to go. I've done a normal calorie deficit diet and working out and because I am 5'2" my maintenance calories were 1300. After 4 months of continuous training I have built fine muscles and my maintenance calories went up to 2200. Muscles are the way!!

Sounds like my "mom".. who was mentally and emotionally abusive and would control every part of my life, including not letting me have sweets because she was projecting her eating disorder onto me and my sister (telling me I'm gonna be a morbidly obese whale when I'm older just because I was slightly overweight during late elementary and middle school, I was like 5'4" and 130 pounds at most smh). I'm nowhere near the size of these people in the video, but I still have lifelong issues with food (among other things) because of her. So I doubt it was just not letting the kids eat whatever they wanted..

By the sounds of things the father was abusive. The mother spoke about needing to "escape", and the kids were happy when they left which probably wouldn't be the case if the father made them feel loved and safe.

Monica said when she was 12, she was 200lbs, by the time she was 13 she was almost 350 lbs. That's 150lbs in one year! Carlton was 200lbs at the age of 5 ! They really haven't said just how dad was abusive, outside of limiting food. Dad may not have been father of the year, but he was right about this.

Limiting snacks from anyone especially children will just make them want it more. If they didn’t get big then they would have gotten bigger later. I think both parents were a little wrong in the situation one restricting them completely from junk as the other snuck it too them whenever they wanted.

Why are saying the dad needed to discipline them when clearly that’s all he did (possibly was abusive it seems too) and if he wanted to encourage a healthy lifestyle, he should’ve taught his kids instead of shaming them. My father used to tell me anytime we had pizza at 9 years old that if I take another bite that I will blow up and turn into a pizza and roll down the street. Those comments stay with you. I have struggled with ED and anorexia due these comments & ones liked these. It’s a sword that cuts both ways, they didn’t just wake up one day with a huge hole in their heart to fill with food. Their parents both play a major role.
