I agree because I usually like going with the flow as much as possible. Besides, it's the most frugal way to manage it. Or if we really want the traditional look we can still cut and weave in the yarn ends to achieve that goal. But the great thing about this particular product is that it should eliminate having to juggle more than one skein at a time, and having to think about which color do I need to grab next. I expect it would also work well enough for alternative, more linear stitch patterns.

I think those who really love making granny squares for specific projects will like this once they figure out what works for them to make the colors fall in place. I like making granny squares as well, but if I ever get my hands on this yarn, it won't be for the purpose it was manufactured for. I've recently discovered the joy of crocheting granny rectangle blankets, and want to see how the colors in this yarn pool up in that pattern when making one giant piece. Also how it appears in other stitches and patterns will be fun to discover. I think it will be fun, and can't wait to get my hands on some.

Following a spinal cord injury, breast cancer, chemo, radiation, massive MRSA infection and adverse drug reactions, I found that neuropathy, chemo brain, etc made it impossible to hold my knitting needles or even understand patterns (have been knitting since 5y.o.). The crochet hook and patterns were almost as bad, but I remembered a square "granny square" baby blanket I had made years before, but wanted to make one a rectangular shape. Of course I found EASY online instruction and have since made several of them in varying sizes. They showcase unique yarns so beautifully. Please share your work if you so choose to make a granny out of this yarn; I'd love to see it!❤

Ok so, I actually love this yarn! Once I made a couple of squares I got used to the tension I needed, and the squares are small enough that redoing a row or part of a row wasn’t too big of a deal. I did manage to get 14 squares out of a ball, and I love that the colors are already chosen for me! I struggle with making decisions (and I also really REALLY hate weaving in ends)

I think it's a cool idea and brilliant for people on a budget who don't want to use multiple skeins just to make multicoloured granny squares. I'm fortunate that I can fund my crippling yarn addiction and will stick with using separate colours, it'd be more stressful to worry about my tension on top of it. But I'm glad this yarn exists anyway, it does have its benefits!

@GillianBergh
@GillianBergh 6 ай бұрын
If you have the patience to crochet or knit, I don't see why this yarn would need a greater effort, as it's a smooth one, or should that be even? I haven't the patience for uneven ones, such as eyelash. It's quite hard to see if you drop any stitches with them, and also the same when it comes to picking them up.
@jequirity1
@jequirity1 5 ай бұрын
@@GillianBergh The patience comes from needing to re-do every row to get the perfect tension. You can see in the video that some colors needed looser tension and some needed tighter tension, otherwise the colors don't work up right-- this is frustrating to work with.

I got two skeins of those purely because I thought the colors were fun. Didn’t even realize it was for granny squares when I picked it up. Then my mom pointed it out. I got the Black - Carnation. I normally work in the cool tones and most often blues/purples. So I was trying something different. Long story short I was trying to trick my grandma into picking a yarn she liked the color of so I could make her a Celtic scarf for Christmas, plus a matching hat. (Hence the second skein, Which I still have enough of for 3 to 4 more hats) I’ll tell you now, it looked WILD!

For someone like me who doesn't do granny square or projects that require multiple color changes because I HATE weaving in ends. This would actually work for me. It would be worth having some colors off a little to not have ends to weave in. But I'm also not making anything to sell it's usually just for me, so if it's not perfect, it doesn't bother me. I also like the idea of not having multiple skeins of yarn in different colors to work with and leftover yarn in all those colors.

This yarn is actually perfect for people learning color pooling. The granny squares are small enough that re doing the rounds a few times while you learn the colorway isn't nearly as painful as having to frog an entire row of a wave stitch blanket 😂 I think a workaround might be to keep your tension a TINY bit tight and then do an extra DC or slip stitch at the end of the round with any extra yarn. I can see someone figuring out a color pooled mitered square with this yarn. Color pooling is hellish at first but it's one of those things that only gets better with time. You learn how to figure out each yarns colorway and adjust your tension with each color accordingly. Overall I'd rather just pick out all my own colors for granny squares

I will be honest, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS YARN!!!! I know, I am crazy fir saying this. First, I use an H/8 5mm hook. Second, because my tension varies, I created a work around for the squares I am making, so my color changes take place, even with extra length of the color. I am enjoying, working with this yarn. I do what is working for me. I just wish I was able to get the Lily Pad colorway, but it was sold out.

Before the video started. I already knew how this would go (including that no one can return items and NOT buy yarn at Joanna's, it's too tempting). Everyone crochets differently from tension to speed to using a different hook material, all things thet would effect results. So while i guess this video proves its possible to do what the yarn claims you can do, the conclusion is obviously unless youre the person who tested the yarn before it was marketed to the public, you very likely are going to get different results. I dont mind acrylic yarn (it was hilarious to see Tony basically roll her eyes at it because she didnt want to diss it too much 😂) i just don't think constantly fighting to have the colors match is worth it. Crochet is supposed to be fun/relaxing, having to frog every row and redo it til it matches is the fastest way to either make me throw out a yarn or abandon my previous pattern. Its a cool idea to not have to weave in any ends, but for me personally if i wanted a specific color on each row i also want thr ability to change it around if i feel necessary. All that being said, i would consider this yarn if it was on sale. I LOVE colorful granny squares and I love the colors changing in there own because i personally prefer multiple colors per row. I think it would look neat. So while it's cool that its technically possible to make a granny square using one color per yarn, thats not how i make mine anyway ❤😂. So for me its a 6/10. It would be 8 but -2 points for that ridiculous price. This is acrylic yarn and from my experience red heart doesnt seem to one the "premium acrylic" end but they sure like to charge like it 😒. Ive knitted/crocheted with better acrylic yarn for half the price of red hearts.

I was worried after so many people haven’t liked it but I like that even if something doesn’t work for you, you explain the pros and cons and how it might work for someone else. I love the look of granny squares but I’ve never been able to make a full project with them for a few different reasons. For me I struggle picking colors that look nice together so having a set color scheme is wonderful for me. I also hate weaving in ends to the point that I wont even finish a project if it has too many ends so fiddling around with the tension and switching hooks might be worth it to me. I would rather redo a row multiple times than weave in multiple ends per square.

Love your videos! And love love this granny square yarn. Found the secret: first, ditch instructions on the back of label. Use a 6.0 (J) crochet hook, chain only two in the corners (instead of three), and leave out the chain one between clusters. This way you will always have yarn of each color left over at the end of your round. Then instead of stressing, simply slip stitch along top until you get to the next start of a cluster where your new color lines up. Works every time without fail and you can't tell. The key is to be flexible and this yarn will make beautiful granny squares for everyone!

I have now watched 3 different KZbin crocheters review this yarn and everyone has had the exact same issue of the colors not matching up with the round. The other two I watched actually got better results by not doing the squares the way the pattern says to. And so far I have heard from just about everyone that they do not make their granny squares like that, which makes me wonder who they had designing this yarn and that pattern that makes granny squares in such a strange way. I feel like to truly love this yarn and make it worth your time you have to REALLY hate weaving in ends. I cannot imagine putting so much time and effort into undoing and redoing every single round until you get the perfect color change unless that is less frustrating than weaving in a few ends for each square. I’m definitely going to pass on this yarn.

My observations after watching 5 KZbin reviews of this yarn: If you experts can’t get the colors to come out perfect (and nobody can), what is the hope for us?! The time it takes to keep ripping out the rows, just get regular yarn and hide your ends. And lastly, you do realize that since you used some of the purple that was needed for the next square, the next square will be really messed up. You are so kind in your opinion, so I’m going to rip off the band aid for you. Used for its purpose, this yarn sucks! 😂 I love you and your channel.

Agreed! I watched videos from people who beta tested and helped the brand bring it out and they're also frogging and switching hook sizes. I already give up and throw my crochet in the closet when I mess up, I don't need the added stress 😂😂😂

Thanks for trying it for us Toni! I'd been contemplating how I'd use this if I got any, and honestly it probably wouldn't be granny squares. I'd rather just weave in ends than try to manage the tension to that extent. This looks like it'd be fun to just use in a hat, scarf, crocodile scale project, or a sweater- something you're not trying to plan the color orientation for. The colors they used are mostly okay too.

No one really seems to understand how difficult it would be to produce a yarn like this. The fact that they even tried and it's mostly successful is a feat. I'm shocked at the snooty reviews I've seen of this yarn.

I'm not, to be honest. The fact that this was probably difficult to produce says nothing about its practical utility for most crocheters. Are these reviews you mention actually being "snooty" or do they actually have valid points? Aside from that, I wouldn't want to think that someone had an obligation to give a positive review for factors that, like it or not, are irrelevant to the user experience.

I was fascinated by the title and concept, but the problems were obvious to me for one main reason. Tension. My mother taught me to crochet, and of course she started with the granny square. I'm 62, she's 83. She tried for 50 yrs before I "got it" and became comfortable doing it. But our squares were never the same size. And it is only now after all this time that I can even adjust my tension voluntarily. It looks like it would work as an ombre multicolor yarn. But I could never make it work as designed. Probably a me problem, but to many variables for general use.

Hi Toni!! Hello Everyone! I too bought the Granny All in One yarn. I am missing a couple colors. I had no plans to make any granny squares LOL! I I love granny squares. I have made several of Juan's Backgammon scarf with a matching beanie. I saw a lady in one of my crochet groups use it to make a simple double crochet afghan. Made a beautiful abstract design. So I copied her and I am making 3 of them. Only I am doing double crochet back loop only for a little texture. One is with Citrus Twist, one with Black Dove and Shadow - I'm alternating the skeins, when one run out I add the next. The 3rd one is Black Moody Cherry. I love the colors!! Have a great evening!! I love your reviews!!

I avoid red heart simply because I don’t do well with acrylic. Acrylic seems to irritate my skin and I have to limit the amount of time I work with it. I have a ton of it I bought at garage sales and it’s pretty enough, I just can’t work with it very long without my hands breaking out.

Agree with your review 100%! As an experienced crocheter/knitter, I also found that I had to adjust as I went, and for beginners, this is a non-starter. That being said, I understand why Red Heart/Yarnspirations gave this a try. I would agree with your 5/10 crochet hooks evaluation but I would add that the IDEA and INTENTION behind it was a solid 8 or 9 out of 10. I don't want to discourage innovative thinking - thanks for the review (and validation!) and thanks to Yarnspirations for trying a new idea!!

All of this! I already know my tension, well, its just that, “my tension”. I’m confident enough in my crochet that I know I could make adjustments to get this yarn to work, but “would I really want to?”. However, I believe that there are many who love this yarn, and don’t mind the decisions like color placement and pattern being done for them, but that’s not me. I’ve watched quite a few reviews of this yarn, but I felt (que the old school term), “played”. This was the first video to address all of the elephants in the room chilling with this yarn. One idea I saw on Yarnspirations is using this yarn as just a normal yarn to make a stripes. It results in stripes of various widths and it's actually pretty. We got this yarn in at the store I work at and I love the aran - cream colors! I would love to try making granny squares with it but if it's too frustrating I can always make something else with that beautiful yarn.

I appreciate that you tried this. I felt that it was too good to be true and while I am happy to know it worked for some people, it does detract from some of the creativity of crafters. I had wondered about how many colorways they had, and I think I'd like more of a variety. Though I admit I do like color changing yarn because then I have less to weave in. I use mandala yarn at the moment for a blanket that I am making for my son and yes, I have cut the yarn a few times. But other than that, I just use a color until I have to change it. So, if I were to replicate the technique with the same yarn, there's no guarantee it would look exactly the same as the first one I made. Which I like. But that also depends on how the yarn is prepared for sale. You know what would be interesting to use this yarn with considering how the color changes are already done? Freeform crochet. I haven't done it before but have seen some rather interesting creations from others using that technique.

I believe that after the first few 'fiddly' ones, you would get the tension right, you can't just do one granny square and consider it thoroughly tested. Once you have the tension right, OMG how quick this would make it to make up blankets, especially for those of us that like making charity/donation blankets.....think how cool it would be to be someone who gets squares donated - to now have squares that are easier to put together because they're all the 'same' tension.....stick with it hun, I can see it would become a great experience and you could mix and match squares from different balls to make different look projects. :) Hugs, Naomi from Sth Australia xx

Toni, thanks for reviewing this. You are an experienced crocheter, so to loosen tension in one round and then tighten in the next, it's obviously not you. This reminds me of the yarn that was created for pooling plaid scarves. I have done a couple, and while I LOVE the end product, I found the process quite fussy.

I just did my first granny square. Ended up using a J hook but then used I hook for final round to tighten it up some. If I had some yarn of a color left I slipped stitched over to next ch space or so. I have done a circle and then a hexagon with I hook and did well with it. I HATE WEAVING IN ENDS AND THIS WORKED WELL. i do like the colorways also.

Personally, I would use it, only not the way it is intended. I take my scrap yarn that has at least enough length to make a few stitches and attach it all together in a giant ball and then make one large granny square about 45 inches each side. It is a quick project that only takes a few hours while watching a movie (or youtube) since I don't even have to look at what I am doing once I have the first row done. A truly mindless project. As for the squares, they work great for when you are just a little chilled and you drape them over your lap or wrap them around your shoulders. They also make wonderful dog blankets and my dogs have a rotating stash of them and a few more have gone to my local animal shelter. I would use this yarn to finish out one of those giant balls of yarn when I feel like making one of these giant granny squares but don't have quite enough scraps.

I was curious as to what you had to say about this yarn when it came out and I am so glad that you didn't disapoint by reviewing it. YAY! This yarn reminds me of the planned pooling yarns that were so popular a few years ago. My tension is not average and I usually have to adjust many things to make gauge and I know how frustrating that can be to myself who is an experienced crocheter of many years so I agree that this yarn is not for beginners as it could set them up for failure to craft launch. There are several people who I know personally who attempted to learn crochet with the planned pooling yarn to get a buffalo plaid blanket as it was single crochet and how hard could it be (their words not mine) and when they couldn't do it got frustrated and donated all of the yarn to me for my classes and samples. Thanks again for your honest reviews!

i agree with everything you said! i’m working with the same color way you used and for me, i just know my tension is so tight that i can’t be bothered to frog every row. i’ve made peace with it and honestly i don’t mind sewing in ends so for me, it’s nice that the color palette is picked out and all the colors are weighed out and i can just cut the yarn at each color change

As someone who's always been intimidated by Granny Squares, I love this! I learned how to crochet when I was about 9, but I picked it back up during quarantine in 2020. I know basic stitches, but trying newer things has always put me off because stitches & projects tend to look way more complicated than they are. But this is a great way to practice tension as well! I absolutely love Red Heart yarns.

The concept is genius...if we all crocheted the same way! I taught my daughter to crochet, but even she and I have very different styles (how we hold our hooks, our yarn, etc.). And I don't make my magic circle the way the instructions state. I like mine to close. I don't think this will be a big success because of it's limitations. Thanks Toni!
