T.M. Krishna as always, finds soulful Kritis - in this case from Basaveshwara. The "Vachana Sahitya" as it is widely known, are compositions by great philosophers; composers mostly from northern part of Karnataka. Very much popularized in Hindustani style of music by stalwart singers like Bhimsen Joshi, Basavaraj Rajaguru, Jayanth Mevundi and many others - these are similar to what Tamil Nadu is familiar with as "Nayanmars". Vachana Sahitya also focussed on women and foremost among them was Akka Mahadevi. It is truly fitting and graceful of Krishna to sing the famous Vachana of Basaveshwara - who says to the Lord (in this Vachana) "You are the father, the mother, you are my relative and friend. Other than you I have no one else". It is important that singers break barriers of language and geography that had separated the land and people. Bring them closer to show - we as a nation have a uniform message by philosophers, composers and thinkers, across the land. Sung in different languages and styles, and the message of Bhakti (devotion) reverberates - right across.

I don't understand kannada, but the words seem to be like 'tvameva mata, cha pita tvameva, tvameva bandushcha sakha tvameva....'. I guess the roots of both this and the Hindi hymn share the same origin.

Hey quick question. Please reply and help me out with this. Do 'Vachana' as you said also considered as a pure classical performance? As a Hindustani classical musician I don't really understand the Carnatic concepts. Carnatic categories are very complex to me. What I do know is that Charnams and Varnams are pure classical and appropriate for a performance when it comes to a ''Classical Music Competition". Just like we have Bandishes in Hindustani. Whereas thumris and ghazals aren't considered as a pure classical form of art. Please help me out here. 🙏

Tande Neenu-you are my father, Thaayi Neenu-you are my mother, Bandhu Neenu- You are my friend, BaLaga Neenu- (I don’t quite know what this means, but from context I think it says that you are my everything.)Who is one Basavanna is referring to? He says it in the next line - Neen allade mattaaru illayya Koodala Sangama Devaa. Meaning : There is no one expect you oh Koodala Sangama Deva! Koodala Sangama Deva is the signature or the Ankita Nama of Basavanna. It also refers to God. Most likely the Hindu God Shiva) The next lines go on to explain where God is.Haala Laddu, Neeraladdu. Nimma Dharma, nimma Dharma. Meaning: He is not in milk or in water. He is there is your Dharma. In what you do, in your actions. Dharma is an important concept in Hindu literature as well as The religion itself. It simply means that God is there in everything you do. The milk and water appeal to the common man, but they also represent a bigger idea- Results. Basavanna being a philosopher probably wants to convey the point that people should do their duties properly without the expectations of results, because as far as they are concerned, the results are in the hand of god. This is my interpretation and by no means the only interpretation or the true interpretation. I felt it better to explain it rather than merely translating it into English. Hope it helps to satisfy the curious mind of whosoever it may concern. Please do correct me if I am wrong in any way!

Fine rendition. It is rare that Tamilian classical singer sing Kannada Vachanas. Usually they tend to sing the compositions of Sri Purandara Dasaru. Very good departure from the routine. But incidentally, I am unable to reconcile how a leftist columnist like him also sings devotional compositions. It is an apparent contradiction.
