I’m with Lydia on this! I was once invited for a birthday lunch and I happened to get there a little late. I had budgeted for my meal, my drink and the birthday girls lunch split, I had budgeted for like 7k.. wuehhhh! These girls were having shots upon shots, cocktail upon cocktail and even sending shots to girls at another table, plus the starters and drinks they’d had before I got there! Let me tell you Maina! The bill came and lo and behold! Each person was expected to chuck like 15k!!!!!😅I was the one saying aaaah I’m sorry that wasn’t in my budget. Unfortunately the other ladies weren’t understanding and they were like this is how we do! I was like no! I’m not about to pay for drinks and things I didn’t partake! So no! If you eat and order something..be prepared to pay for it and not get carried away and split the bill equally! No ma’am!

You only split the bill if the food was around the same cost. Just because all of your friends are in the same money bracket doesn’t mean you can say that they have money! That extra 3k from splitting the bill could have been used for something else that they have budgeted for towards something else. Just because I might make 100k doesn’t mean I’m looking to spend 100k. If that makes sense

I have very very weak money boundaries. And listening to this conversation, I now realize that I have enabled my friends and family to use me. Am the kind who will go out with friends, pay all the bill n expect them to send me their share; and when they don’t I get angry n never ask them… and still repeat that the next time 😢😢😢. I will heal coz this is crazy… I think this originates from people pleasing, coz am like Murugi. Never want to start those small small calculations on the table when the bill comes. It’s such an uncomfortable situation for me btw 😢

Billionaires respect ten shillings the way they respect a million shillings. So in my opinion there is no shame in paying your fair share at a dinner table and paying for what you had. I am sure the person who had more doesn't mind having others pay their share when it is split equally but does the friend who repeatedly has to pay more for others feel that that equal split arrangement is fair? Broke energy is relying on other folks to top up more than what they had to cover the expensive taste of another. I am fairly well compensated but I will pay for my consumption because I feel that is me keeping better track of my spending.

This episode is a whole social experiment! You can CLEARLY tell the differences in money personalities between Murugi and Lydia. This was very raw and you can tell the honesty. Having friends from different backgrounds (extremely wealthy to extremely not wealthy) has taught me to be more considerate. I lean a lot towards Lydia's money personality. Funny how both Murugi and Lydia come from almost the same money upbringing.

I really look forward to a time when we can have healthy money conversations without ever feeling like we are in a tight spot; I will not go out and pay for anyone's bill again if I never told you, I used to pick up tabs when I was younger and had no boundaries. Why do I have to pay 4,000 when I consumed 2,500. A platter, a whole bottle of a drink is different Joan! That is one shared meal, but different meals as in, to each their own. I want to burst this myth, Joan, millionaires get their own bills and that is why their never go broke, they are not paying bills because they are rich. That is a poor money habit, I have heard even Mark Cuban say this. A very bad habit. That is what encourages people to be entitled. And if you examine the cultural differences of Black people, you will notice this mentality; the friend or relative that has more is expected to pay, pick up, and care for everyone's bill all the time. We definitely need more financial literacy as a people.😊 I agree with Joan to only ask people you are close to to lend you when you need the money. Fuel the cars if they give you lifts all the time especially if it is out of your way.

Why do we, as Africans, need reasons for people to pay us back? If someone lends you money, you borrow the money and know you have to return it on a specific date, but you do not honour the date. Why do I have to first tell you a problem I am trying to solve, the need for the money, and the urgency? Please lets pay when we say we would pay regardless of whether the people that gave the money are well off or not.

To avoid that awkward “calculator moment” when paying bills, this is what my friends and I do: One person pays, then they(the person that has paid) keeps the receipt. So the next day, they send everyone their bill. So we send the money to whoever paid. I hope that makes sense. You will never see us doing calculus at the restaurant/club. Disclaimer: You can only do this if there’s money-trust within the circle. You can’t do this with flimsy people!

Splitting the bill isn't broke energy. I'll forever stand on that hill Splitting the bill is what creates entitled people. Smts someone is actually full. They drink a milkshake ya 500 but you had food and juice ya 1500 and you want me to cater for you?? Also, in this scenarios you find that you're in a grp. Eg, you're travelling as friends and had some lunch. Ama churchmates you decide to go have some lunch. Obviously everyone for himself.

tt's rude to ask how much money someone else makes, and it's also disrespectful to share how much money you make unless there is a good reason to do so, i.e., someone is looking for a job in your field and wants to know a typical salary range. But, again, this can make people feel uncomfortable.

If its not a big difference that's okay, but a big difference!? But maybe when I become a billionaire the conversation maybe different 😅time will tell.

I also tip only when the service is great. There’s a time I went out for lunch with a friend and she got mad coz she wanted BOTH of us to tip.I felt the service was nothing out of the ordinary so I wasn’t going to tip but she wanted us to split the bill right down to the tip 🤔 it was so strange. I also later realized that I pick the tab most times, it’s either that or we’re splitting the bill, I was like no, not doing this anymore ✌🏽 people can be weird about their money

I agree with Lydia on this one. Everyone should pay whatever they partook unless the bill was somewhat equal. Clearly Murugi is speaking from a place of privilege and has never been at a place where they need budgeting especially a large group. I remember I was part of a group where we did a baby shower, we had agreed to split the bill as the food was relatively the same and some drinks. However some people in the group started ordering bottles. And they drank alone. By the time the bill was coming, everyone was to remove 18k. We refused. The ones who took the bottles were to pay it themselves as they did not even involve us, and those of us who had food and cocktails, the bill was 5k. Until the manager got involved, the cops were almost being called for our lack of agreeing. In the end, the bills were split, and everyone paid for exactly what they took. After that large groups and food is a no please., unless it is agreed upon initially everyone to pay for themselves. The waiter will be informed beforehand whether to split the bill or bring one bill.

Splitting bills is not broke energy. Actually Lydia paying your end when Murugi picks up the tab might be one of the reasons the froendship has lasted. She may be able to pay for all the lunch dates but it's rude to assume. Murugi may say she never overthinks it but chances are that if you didn't pay back 3 or 5 times consistently, she would notice and would create awkwardness in that friendship.

How much people are going to spend in general and who's giving what amount( some may give more if they're comfortable)should be discussed before going out instead of getting uncomfortable on site. If anyone wants to take something extra that's not on the planned budget that should be on them- How I see it

Being able to get a loan is not a sighn of wealth. People take bank loans through salary check off, they take Sacco's loans ,live in nice houses with 30yrs mortgages, have car loans for the nice cars they drive. So outwardly they look wealth but if you take their net assets less debt they have nothing. Then they live paycheque to paycheque, some if their jobs ended they don't have enough to retain their lifestyle for the next three months leave alone six months. Outward appearance is not a true indicator of wealth

Debt financing allows individuals to leverage borrowed funds to invest in assets, expand their business(side hustles)operations, or pursue projects that could generate income or appreciate over time. When these investments yield positive returns that exceed the cost of borrowing, they contribute to wealth. For example, real estate purchases, business expansion, or investments in high-return projects often involve debt financing, which, if successful, leads to greater wealth accumulation. However, if the debt is mismanaged, used for depreciating assets, or if investments fail to provide adequate returns, it can quickly turn into a financial burden. High debt with poor returns drains resources, hinders wealth creation, and risks financial stability. In short, debt financing can be a pathway to wealth if it fuels profitable ventures but requires cautious management to avoid the risk of debt-driven losses.

@@wakeshograce3049 what about debt to fund lifestyle. I agree with what you are saying. Debt to start a business. Debt to develop real estate. Most people I know are in debt to fund a lifestyle

The “Why wouldn’t you pay the 3 thousand extra?” and “there are certain conversations that millionaires are not having”?!! I’m sorry that my bank account set up in a way that I can only afford to pay for myself in a particular season😭 If I spent 500, I’m not paying an extra 3k. It just doesn’t make sense
