Lazy Game Reviews did something like that. He had an old copy of a Red Baron flight simulator game, and it came with a coupon for Red Baron Pizza, which said it had no expiration date. LGR tried using the coupon at some grocery store, and it went through with no problem at all. The cashier didn't notice anything about it until he pointed out that it was something like 25 years old. :-D

I love how on the Italian version of the TMNT2 VHS they translated only half of the subtitle "the secret of the ooze". Ooze in Italian isn't really a word and with the subtitle translated like that it makes it sound like Ooze is the name of a character in the movie instead of just the Ooze that turned the Turtles into what they are. It's such a weird localization choice. The first movie is called "Tartarughe Ninja alla riscossa" (which sort of translates to "Ninja Turtles to the Rescue") because it was also the localized title for the cartoon on italian airings.

Alright, as an Israeli fan of your show, Phelan, I might be able to fill in some blanks (at last, the opportunity is at hand!). First of all, the fact that they dubbed the movie into Hebrew is pretty unusual, since Israelis in general don't like dubbing and prefer subtitles, especially in live-action movies. I guess they made an exception in this case, since this is a children's movie, and kids might have a hard time reading the subtitles fast enough (and most of the characters are puppets anyway). As far as I can tell, there was no Hebrew dub of the sequels. That logo at the upper left corner is for "Classikaletet", an Israeli video distributor which specialized in children's movies and videos. Let's just say that this company was a major part of the childhood of every Israeli of my generation. According to the writing next to it, GMC stands for "General Music Company" Video. I don't know who they are, but I think it's safe to say they're unrelated to the car manufacturer. The logo next to the Pizza Hut logo is for "Strauss", an Israeli ice cream and dairy-product company. The writing in yellow next to it is advertising one of their most popular products, "Milky", which is chocolate pudding with whipped cream (it's also not that good, but we didn't really know better back then). And yes, that is in fact the first movie split into two tapes. My best guess as to why they would do that is that they can charge more for two tapes than one. Keep up the good work, Phelan!

The German DVD (and Blu-ray) releases of Turtles II and III also had director commentaries. You should seek those out, Phelan. Also, the Australian DVD of TMNT (2007) included deleted scenes with removable commentary (unlike other releases which had forced commentary). There was an exclusive DVD of TMNT (2007) from I think Target which had a bonus disc with an extra featurette. Also all worth tracking down.

So I'm going to speculate about why they are called "Hero Turtles" in the Japanese release. Someone else may have already said this, and what I have is an educated guess, at the most. Japan is the one place in the world where ninja are a genuinely native part of the culture. The Japanese people have a firm grasp of what is meant when they hear the word "ninja". But in Japan, ninja are not commonly seen as good guys. Their skills are suited to theft, spying and assassination. They work for whoever pays them, and live by no code of honor other than "get the job done". This is heavily contrasted with the samurai, who in earlier times served the Emperor with total loyalty and preferred death to dishonor. To present the Turtles to a Japanese person and then call them "ninja" would sound confusing and ridiculous. It would be like a version of "Saving Private Ryan" where all the soldiers were called "cowboys". Any American would not be able to hear the word "cowboy" even once without completely losing his suspension of disbelief. The Foot Clan could fit the description of a ninja clan, but the Turtles would not. China, while still in Asia, would see Japan as totally different from themselves on a cultural level. So they could probably see the Turtles called "ninja" and accept the word, as we do. But in Japan, it made the whole movie much more understandable to swap out the word "ninja" for other words whenever possible. That's my guess.

That's good to know. I wonder why these aren't on the US releases? Were the commentaries commissioned specifically by the German company? (If that were the case, it might be that the US company would have to pay the German company to use the commentaries, but they are too cheap to do so.)

@@KasumiKenshirou Correct - WinklerFilm, who produced the ner german DVDs vor the second and third Movie comissioned them themselves, because there were no other Special Features to license for the Movies (except for the Behind the Shells Doc which is also on the new DVD & Blu-Ray by them)

For all their innovative, seemingly futuristic technology that you often hear about; everyday Japanese culture is still remarkably old-fashioned and often slow to embrace “ the latest and greatest”. So basically in the early 90s VHS technology was there but demand for it probably not so much.

the actual appearance of the turtle kanji on the hong kong box art is 龜. it's probably the only modern kanji that has some discernible resemblance to the animal that it represents. unfortunately, the simplified variant; 亀, is used far more often.

October 4th 1990 was the release day of the original TMNT movie. I bought it that very day and on a Monday.

Should try and use one of those coupons, to see if they will still accept them. Out of the collection I think I like the look of the South Korea one the most. I get the feeling that TMNT 3 haunts your nightmares, I don't think I've ever actually seen it.

In case you don't know, video CD was a laserdisc format made by Philips in Europe to try to give laserdisc a market push, that didn't work out and was phased out for laserdisc and the digital formats video CD and later DVD and blu ray.

Fun fact: "alla riscossa" means "to the rescue". Just one of the many foreign releases of movies that decided to add something to the title. You can go to google translate to hear a proper pronunciation, by the way.

The artist who made those realistic turtles also got ripped for a cover for The He-Man movie. I don't think he was super thrilled his art was getting used without compensation and I suspect this was one of those cases as well, althought it's less likely he found art. Who's making this official covers and why doesn't someone stop them from "just Googling it"?

Every time I've seen Turtles III individually on Blu-ray, they've called it "Turtles In Time" and I live in California. I wish I could get a port of Turtles in Time on Steam... But hey, Arcade 1Up is releasing an arcade machine with both Turtles arcade games on it you can buy for your home! Which I probably won't get because it's several hundred dollars and I don't have room for the cabinet... Also, for a variant, there was a Turtles in Time "remake" for PS3 and Xbox 360 that used 3D graphics and the TMNT 2003 voices.

I was born and raised in Israel and I didn't even know that there was a Hebrew version of this movie, not to mentiont the fact that there was really something weird about splitting video tapes into two Because I once had a Scooby Doo movie that it was split into Part 1 and Part 2 and when they were the same movie only that Part 1 was cut into some sections of it, and if you want to know what movie it was, it was the movie "Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers"

My first thought was that the videos were recorded in SP to achieve the best quality, but standard VHS tapes can fit two hours of video at SP and TMNT is only 93 minutes long. The tape reels are short, though, so maybe it still is a quality thing?

The only copy of TMNT 3 I have is a DVD that came packaged with a huge 2003-style Donatello figure. It has no menus or special features. After the trailers for the first 2 much better movies, the movie just plays and it just loops after the credits finish.

If you're wondering why there's both Ireland and UK labels on those? It's because we're in the same shopping region, at the time don't hold things from before then or after Brexit against this comment. It just cheaper to have both of the labels on there, means that you only need to print one cover rather than two.

Well I have a set Phelous may never have. I worked at Blockbuster for years and I used to like switching out my DVD cases with coloured cases from other sets if it fit the movie. So my 4 TMNT films are in Blue (Nims Island), Red (cheaper by the dozen), Purple (some Barney movie) and Orange (Garfield) cases

I put some of my Christmas movies in Red and Green cases, Little Miss Sunshine in a yellow case, Broken Flowers in a Pink case, JCVD I put in a gold case from the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen because I liked the way it looked :P It was just fun to do and my collection is more colourful.

If you want another oddity for the DVD part of collection you should look into tracking down the Mini-DVD version of the first movie. For whatever reason Warner thought it would be cool to release a bunch of their kids movies on discs the size of GameCube games. I have the Mini-Disc version of "Batman Mask of the Phantasm" myself, it's literally just the regular NA version spread across 2 small discs. Everything from that line seems kinda annoying to search for nowadays, let alone buy. But if you google "walmart 3663304" the first result will show you a picture of the TMNT one.

In case it hasn’t already been mentioned - CD Video was a failed attempt to relaunch LaserDisc in the UK by Philips in about 1988, also adding a video to music CDs. Techmoan has done a video about this on his channel.

I have a 4-movie set including the first three live-action films and the animated "TMNT", which comes in a sewer-manhole-shaped soft DVD case, and I expected it to make an appearance here, but it didn't :( It comes with a few stickers and four masks as extras, it's pretty neat, though being the soft DVD holders they're probably more prone to scratching.

Probably contains some information they are obligated to include but the manufacturers don't don't want to make the disk bigger to add it

Why does it seem like, as a TMNT fan, I'm getting gypped on special features with these movies? No deleted scenes except for the german ones, only the trailers, and practically no commentary. Would it kill the makers toput in some special features, like I don't know, makings of to show us how hard the stunt men practiced to fight in the Turtle suits, some ideas that went into making the movie, ANYTHING! Even the Ghostbusters has that awesome booklet that tells you how the film came to be.
