Great video! I share your sentiments at the end and let's just hope that the movie is good! Being a long time TMNT fan, It doesn't matter to me what race April is because in the comic and series, she has been portrayed differently so as long as Seth Rogen and company deliver a great story, thats all that matters to me.

As a black man, my problem with them making April black is Paramount would rather just race change April instead of creating a new black female character for the TMNT methos. Race changing and saying “it’s a different universe” is lazy because that enables writers to check boxes with out having to put work into creating a new character.

The race or gender swapping for original characters is lazy and unnecessary. Marvel and DC have changed the characters behind the masks plenty of times by changing the secret identity of the character, not pandering to a "modern audience". I've never understood why everybody talks about representation but it always ends in race or gender swapping existing characters because it's easier than creating and selling new characters to the people that claim they want them. The first Nickelodeon series mixed and matched a lot of different source materials but it worked and was fun and entertaining without feeling like it was bending over backwards trying to check boxes.

As a POC I also think that her design change was rather unnessicary, but I also wouldn't have minded it if they made her a completely new character. It was just a weird change to make April an entirely different person and then slap her name on it imo, and it feels a lil lazy to me. I think in general alot of people in media are missing the point on how to represent POC, I feel like they just throw in random character changes to check boxes and I never liked those. What we NEED is more unique characters! Look at characters like Spawn, Shadowman, or Blade. They're some of the coolest heroes of all friggin time! Extremely badass, very unique, very well detailed and told stories, Shadowman even used his blood heritage to get powers from voodoo gods. Why don't people come up with cool ideas like this anymore?!

I have no issues or concern when a character is black in any movie or whatever race they decide to go with but some things should just be kept original imo. I mean if Master Splinter came out as a white mouse like the lab mice I would ask myself why don't they just come up with an original idea and make a new movie period. When I first say TMNT in the mid 80's April Oneil and all characters were consistent for the most part. I honestly wish more cultures would make animated movies and release new fresh ideas

I think that there was no need to change up April so drastically. I wish the studios would just create new characters in order to aim for proper representation (If anything, she could have looked closer to the early Mirage version where she looked black). My problem is that the studios are plain lazy. Even if a character is made to represent my ethnic background / lifestyle it should be done as a new character not an edit of an already established character. Machete, Black Dynamite, Static Shock, Blade, are all good examples of a proper representation of diversity. Even the most recent Django film made sense. The original Italian Django film was so big that it created a bunch of copycats that used the same name to live off of the clout. This was Tarantino's take on the film (Still wish that Nero would have played the original Django in his meet up with Jamie's version.). Regardless though, I know that this film is not for me, nor am I too interested in it. What I do wish for would be a dark Mirage based series that would be my thing.

I think the design of April is such a departure from what we are used to is because Seth wanted to sell an April that wasn't a bombshell in order to distance his TMNT further from other incarnations. This April seems to be authentic and grounded in the approach to her being a journalist. She hasn't made it yet, so probably she does a podcast or something. She gets across that old-school reporter vibe. She's street level, and I think that makes her more accessible to the turtles than waving a microphone in their faces and obsessed with a story. Yes, it's a massive departure, but let's wait and see all right? If dudes want a fit and glamorous April, go watch Megan Fox's stomach.

Tbh I like black characters like the Falcon, Black Panther etc... I also recognize that for a long time, a lot of the source materials were mostly white. But I also don't like to change ''source'' descriptions and original history. We live with our history. I think they could introduce new characters for a black demography... Like a brawler, skater... Imagine a Casey Jones buddy..... Would be cool. But they need to stop tampering with OG characters. Shows are made to enjoy and not like Disney trying to please every lgbt to every race on the globe from East to West. We should be happy to preserve the formula that made us all fans.

All those examples of heavier set black women were being played by men. I get what you mean though. I didn't see an issue with April at all. People want to complain because it's another white character being changed. Dumbest argument is the "stick to the original" argument when half the people don't know the source material or understand why their beloved character was white in the first place.

My issue is more with corporations - that takes advantage of popular topics to turn them into business and make them profitable while pretending to really care in diversity and inclusion. It's the double standard. When it comes to a character that's diverse, they must be played by the person of that divisity no matter what. But if it's a white character, they are given a pass to race change them. What the character is either matters or not. And I the case of a character whose last name is O'Neil, you would expect someone Caucasian to play them since that is an Irish name

If we wanna really nerd out and get down to it, The Nina Turtles is a Spin-off for April ONeil. She was in a comic book by herself to start. then she was a news reporter. So when it comes down to it, April had a life before the Turtles came into it...And she was like 30 or something. Now shes a 15 year old grown up with the world figured out. If anything needs to change its the "Thrill" these people have with exploiting "kids" into the main characters when they're nothing more than glorified victims.....

Hey i follow you on IG and i didnt know you had a YT! Firstly, i am a very white, very irish male. I love women of all shapes and sizes, as most men actually do. And i Def love a beautiful black woman. My problem with this is that it is almost a universal trope in the last several years to turn every redhead character black or at minimum swap their race. As if they are doing something unique or altruistic. It is ALWAYS the redheads. What is up with that? I mean for real, mary jane, jimmy olsen, wally west, Barbara gordon, Heimdall, cyclone, iris west, batwoman, april O'Neil, human torch, flash thompson, carrie kelly robin, electro, and the list goes on and on! And i dont have a problem with updating or changing characters, nor diversifying the cast. But damn, there are actually a lot of pretty badass black characters already lets utilize them! But my major issue with TMNT is their weak look. The TMNT are mutants. They have never been portrayed like 11 year olds pre-pubescent weaklings. They are young at heart with extremely athletic physiques. These turtles dont look like they could fight anything IMO. Great video. Subbing. 🙂

I'll be honest with you: I hate every version of April that isn't the original one from the 80's. Everyone, even Megan Fox's. And I feel this way because to me the original one, redhead tv journalist wearing an orange jumpsuit, is perfect. It's an irrational type thing, I admit it is so, but darn... I just wish they just stop messing around and brought April back; which they did in the most recent game. And I haven't heard any complains about that decision, has anyone? Look, like I said it's an irrational thing for me, just a preference. But those type of changes to a character are a very finicky thing. Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury made me wish that character had been African-American since the start. Domino being played by Zazie Beetz was a performance I actually enjoyed a lot, and those movies version of Blind Al are just perfect too. But you know what didn't work out for me? When they slimmed down Amanda Waller for one of the runs of The Suicide Squad comic. What I mean is that I don't know. Some times it works and some times it doesn't, and to me not a single one alternative version of April had ever worked. They have way more consistency with Cacey! Why does he gets to be himself but April has to be changed every time...? It's not fair, it's all I'm saying.

To me she is just another varient of April in the multiverse/turtleverse the creators have already established. I honestly do not care what colour her skin is or her weight. All I care about is her personality and if she is interesting. Right now my two favourite April's on screen media are 2003 and Rise. Both for different reasons but it has always been down to who they are as characters and their writing. If this April is a badly written character who does nothing then I will say but am holding back judgement until I see the movie. Just feels like a certain kind of person hates representation. The people complaining probably have never seen those three examples of what you're talking about. Firstly, congratulations on starting the channel and I wish you the best success with it. In relation to the topic of the video- I think that you make very valid points. For me, I tend to stick within the 80's/early 90's TMNT bubble so I generally don't pay too much attention to the newer media. I do however think that some of the 'outrage' shown towards this new version of April O'Neil is more to do with people trying to create controversy around something that is essentially not really that important to the quality of the overall product. There is also a just some people who are staunchly opposed to making any changes to a legacy character and will complain about it because they see it as an attack on their personal favourites from the past. Then there are others who hold very outdated views on topics like race and gender and just want to make sure that the world knows what their inept opinions are 😂. Great video. This is a prime example of how looks/appearance obsessed America is. I've had people (especially white women) argue against this claim whenever i bring this up, but their reactions when their beloved character's appearance is altered to feature non-white traits literally proves my point. I remember similar reactions when they chose Daniel craig for playing Bond because he was shorter than 6 feet, lol. Same criticisms for Tom hardy because apparently he was 'short' for playing Bane in TDKR. Tom holland had the same criticisms when he was chosen to play Spiderman. Gomez Addams from the 'Wednesday' show also got criticized because apparently he was "ugly" and puerto rican. For a country that prides itself in being multicultural, they care way too much about appearance.

When I watch something I want to enjoy there are things that have to be met in order for me to even attempt to enjoy something and style is one of those things. There are also things that will turn me off instantly and one of those things is needless change. When you change something for no reason or if I suspect you have an agenda behind your change then it will turn me off of the product IMMEDIATELY and I will never look back. To this very day I still have not bothered to watch A Nightmare on Elm Street 2010 or Fright Night 2011 or Ghostbusters 2016 or Afterlife and I will never watch those movies because they do not meet the standard I am looking for. So, I think April in this film is hideous as is the artstyle. I will never see this movie and as a matter of fact I didn't bother watching the current cartoon version as it also has a hideous artstyle.

I don't mind the race and weight personally if we stick to the canon that in tmnt there's a multiverse and alternative dimensions then different April's and Casey's make so much sense they're not meant to be all the same. I think people are upset due to the brainwashing of society standards I grew up on the 80-90s and onwards thanks to my parent's. Best video I've seen so far about this discussion the lot of video's from other channels gave a stressful headache but you didn't. I think the mayhem design was preppy and cute and suited her teen school year's.

Honestly… watched the movie a few days ago and all the humans looked ugly as hell. BBBUT, I understand why fans are upset, even though I loved the movie and the directions they decided to go with, you still have a hard time loving that character… Putting the looks aside, you want to emotionally understand and be able to like that character but her.. she just reminded me of the angry big mouth young girls these days. Also, they are messing with the content too much (in this movie I could care less which race she ended up being) but for for DC universe and The Witcher… they ended up F***ing themselves over

April is Irish so she isnt your typical WHITE woman. SHe isn't European white but I believe April was always Black Irish. She was never a European to me but I guess she was to other people. Just make her a little thick give her braids and glasses and boom? Yeh no they did that BS on purpose. They could have made her look like SHuri from Black Panther...That is not saying Thick woman are not beautiful but the whole stereotype that all black woman are overly thick needs to stop.

In general, i dont agree with race/gender swapping established characters. Just take the time to introduce a new character since you want to take the franchise in a different direction to begin with. Honestly, though, i agree with your sentiment..well, that's different. Then, I spent the next few minutes trying to figure out if she was supposed to be a teenager or adult 😂. Personally, i dont care for this incarnation of TMNT as a whole.

That is actually false. Her name is based on a friend of Peter Laird. She was never black. She permed her hair in the 80s mirage comics, which was a popular thing to do at that time.

I find it hilarious how quickly these same people forget about the 87 cartoon with a white ginger Baxter Stockman. I think if it’s that big of an issue don’t support it and fortunately other versions of the character still exists for those people. Personally I’m more upset that we don’t get more Rise of the TMNT which features my favorite version of April, I couldn’t care less that she was black, I care more that the character was fun because fun is ultimately what it should be all about with these characters.

If you allow me to say something without you taking it badly to your video or the subject, why do people complain about the design and what are the reasons: I find it amusing that people of color (some) say that they don't care or according to them they don't care about those issues but they show how hypocritical they are, I say that they had not complained in the 87 version to baxter They made him a target and according to that it is racism to his people and that is why the company returned him fly and they never used it so often so that future adaptations would never turn it white ever. Apart from the fact that this is disappointing, the tmnt franchise has characters of color, lgbt or women that they can use instead of forcibly changing that, I'm talking about gender, why did they change leatherhead to a girl, but they don't look for excuses to change the characters why yes and you just say that there's no harm in making those changes why it doesn't matter but when people of color suit them, and a Latino tells you so Latino who does not want these changes, it is more like in the case of Namor from the mcu that they turned him Maya but nobody liked that change, just as people do not like these changes

@@thequeeng2282 Look, maybe you have that vision of saying that these changes are not bad, either because of new generations and stuff, but still tmnt having Thousands of characters that are of color I mean look, just silver sentry from 2003, they could use any character from I forced the justice but they didn't, on the contrary they took and created a colored character for the franchise and look how many fans love him, they couldn't apply that idea with April and not just change it for What reasons for progressive agendas, you know for a change, right?

I know this vid was released a month ago but I just watched the movie and wanted to leave my two cents. Personally I don't mind her at all to be fair all the humans in this movie look a little skewed because the style they were aiming for was like doodles in the side of your notebook. I see where people are coming from but I personally don't agree and the fact that a bunch of grown men caring about how attractive a teenager is kinda weirds me out but I have seen a lot of comments across multiple videos discussing this about her weight and how she should be fit in order to help the turtles and being fair I see where people are coming from but throughout the movie she was never really a kick butt type of support she mainly used her reporter skills to help them. And I don't mind her being black either since race doesn't really play a big factor in her character and we get good versions of April no matter what race she is. Basically I don't really care as long as she is a well written character which she is from what I've seen. And those other versions of April will always be there for y'all to enjoy if you don't like this one. But other than this whole thing the movie was great and I would definitely recommend it!!

Honestly this version of April O'Neil is not what I grew up with. Her character was not older she was a teenager and afraid of being on TV. That is not the kind of April O'Neil I grew up with. She lacked character and was lame. The movie sucked. The Turtles were all the same. It wasn't even any good. I love the Teenage mutant ninja Turtles but this film was aweful. It wasn't even because of the change of April O'Neil. It was bad writing and no character development.

In their first fight over the scooter one turtle spits on his downed opponent. The scene is so fast you barely catch it also the lack of weapon discipline by nearly killing April with a ninja star to the head before befriending her. Not to mention the turtles stealing beforehand. They didn't put much emphasis on the turtles being actual martial artist in this woke adaptation. Very disappointing as a TMNT fan since the 90's
