I feel like with each generation of TMNT since 2012, the goal has been to make the turtles be more "teen-like". However, Mutant Mayhem by far does the best job of representing teenagers. Their dialogue reminded me of how my younger 16 year old brother talks. The improv from the teen voice actors and the writers/directors working with the VAs definitely helped it's accuracy.

Well it leaves Splinter's earliest history open ended, he starts off as a rat on the streets of New York but it doesn't specify that he was born there, it doesn't specify a few things actually. Maybe that's just something he wants to keep a secret or he has a reason for not bringing that up.

That would be pretty cool having Yoshi become a friend to the turtles and splinter who goes on to improve their ninja skills. Then you could have Shredder kill Yoshi in what would be a very sad moment as unlike the usual storyline, the audience and the characters had time to build a connection with Yoshi. Also it would give the turtles and Shredder a strong connection.

I enjoyed that Leo's crush on April propelled the plot forward, it wasn't a gag. Leo being over the top and needing to save April's scooter was the catalyst to their first fight. Raph, Mikey, and Donnie were ready to bail. At the very start of the movie Leo "rats" out the boys to Splinter about seeing a movie and they all get grounded. This contributes to Leo being in on the lie with his brothers. He has this crush on April, he wants to go to school one day, and he learned already in the film that being honest with his dad gets him punished. I think romance is a part of highschool. I feel like I must have lived a completely different life in HS because me and all my friends were girl/boy crazy. I found Leo's crush on April not creepy, but sweet. He obviously wants to impress her and it's very realistic for a 15 year old to have an interest in girls. Signed anyone who has dated in highschool. Where were some of you going to school where no one was dating? Please, tell me. But maybe more selfishly, after all the hate April's design got before the movie for being bigger and black- to hear Leo refer to her multiple times as gorgeous, beautiful, or just dreamily stare at her- Like come on. That was the best!! Girls with April's body type are going to love this, it's a confidence boost, and Leo is correct. April is beautiful. I don't care if they get together in the end, I'm not a shipper. I am sure fanfiction can fulfill any whim I might have, but please. Let's have more characters like April be beautiful. Full stop. Not fat but beautiful. Not plump but gorgeous. Just beautiful.

Briefly on that last bit: From what I'm told, even the animators on Sausage Party say that Rogen and Goldberg weren't responsible for the bad working conditions (that was mostly Nitrogen Studios and co-director Greg Tiernan apparently), so I can buy that that wasn't carried over to this film. If anything it probably convinced Rogen to keep a closer eye on things this time.

Part of the reason seasons 1-5 of 03 TMNT will forever be GOATed is for having the most healthy Casey/April ship, and not having the turtles pursue humans romantically. In season 5, Mikey is approached with the topic and says, “Maybe if she was green and had a shell, you’d have something.”
@thebeavpercabethftw9604 Жыл бұрын
I am not for a ship between April and one of the Turtles, but they do have human level intelligence and emotions. And it's not like there is an abundance of Mutants their age. It typically works out for Raph, but if they want a significant other I feel like it's unfair to say, "suck it up and hope for the small chance you'll run into another mutant your age who doesn't want to kill you".

I didn't think it was actually that bad. His very one-sided crush on her was actually fairly understated all things considered, and their friendship is by far the focal point. It didn't drag either of their personalities nor character arcs down. Her accepting his prom proposal could very much be read as a "platonic date" sort of deal. I'm also not _completely_ opposed to any of the four of them having crushes on her, nor that she would eventually get together with any of them. However, you would need to be incredibly careful with that approach. They need to have their own character and stories going on first and foremost for it to work.

Can we just get back to 2003 format and Rise format where April just like one of the guys? It made anything they did for her and vice versa feel INCREDIBLY genuine and heartfelt vs "oh I'm just doing it to impress a GIRL." Like, for instance in the 03 version, she lost her HOME, her LIVELIHOOD for the turtles and DID NOT GIVE THEM THE COLD SHOULDER even though it was well within her right. She had no need to go upstate with them to take care of a comatose Leonardo. But she DID. THEY had no real obligation to keep in contact after they first worked together to stop Stockman but they did and they did keep in contact cause they're genuine friends. And in Rise she got herself POSSESSED to help fight the Shredder, she took on the KRANG she's a real one. She took part in their shenanigans, she was more than just a cheerleader or side piece or love interest. She was an ACTIVE member of that family and to me that's so heartwarming. Someone becoming part of the family because of a romantic plot vs found family is something I never really liked; it's why Harry x Ginny always kinda rubbed me the wrong way. Cause it just kinda felt like Harry was given that ship TO BECOME part of the Weasley family. When he always was already. Can we get THOSE Aprils back please?!

My thought regarding the romance angle is I like the idea of them all having schoolboy crushes on April completely oblivious to the fact she's thoroughly uninterested and doesn't even see them close to that way. Like it doesn't dominate their relationship with her, they want to be friends first and foremost, but you can tell these guys have never interacted with a woman before (it'd help if she's way older than them) Also yeah Rise is still aces, I think if Leo was just a bit closer to his normal characterization in that it'd be flawless

I still have a few gripes as a long-time TMNT fan such as Splinter's origin and how the turtles learned martial arts, but I think it's alright for the most part and I had such a fun time with this movie. However, the sudden end of RISE still hurts a bit in my soul. Regardless, this is a new generation of TMNT, and just like RISE, I'm sure they're gonna deliver. I still think the Rise movie is my favorite TMNT movie of all time. But as a theatrical movie, it's my favorite. I give it a 9/10. Great movie and I had a fantastic time.

I loved the animation style in Mutant Mayhem because it showed me my drawings don’t have to be perfectly symmetrical to be pretty. Also, I know it’s weird that the writers erased the Hamato Yoshi lore but put it this way: In most iterations when the Turtles have to fight Shredder, it sometimes feels like Splinter is making them fight his own battles. It feels like he’s saying “Okay my adopted kids, go defeat my nemesis like I taught you!” You know? So even though I miss Splinter being Hamato or his pet rat, I feel like it’s a little better that the turtles fight their own antagonists. About the whole turtle x April thing, it’s funny how this is the only time it’s written right. Like you said, Leo’s not obsessed with April and his crush kind of helps him develop into trusting people more. One more thing, I’m still a little a bitter too of how dirty Nick did ROTTMNT.

Yeah I'm really sick of the take of people saying only the rooftop scene is worth watching. Is this guy who made the video a genuine tmnt fan or is he a casual fan because it's clear TMNT 2007 was trying to go with more established older mature turtles and that over all it's a story about reconnecting with family which I still think is one of the most ambitious things this franchise has ever done which is have the main conflict be internal. I don't care what anyone says TMNT 2007 is the second greatest theatrical movie only under the 1990 film.

I very much enjoyed this movie. It made me understand teenager cliques a bit more as a introverted person. Animation is great (the Hot Diggity fight scene is an animation moment of the year), the Turtles are endearing and loveable, and the other mutant are pretty good too. As far as April and Leo goes, it's harmless imo because 1. Romance is not a subplot in this movie at all, 2. they can resolve that thread in the new TV show and 3. April is the only human I can say that looks "normal" in comparison to every other human. So her being deemed as a "beautiful young woman" by Leo is funny in that context. That said, I'm looking forward to what's next for this incarnation of Turtles.

Honestly I’m not totally on board with “rise is better, we should’ve gotten more of that” which surrounds this movie, as that kind of harsh comparison is what originally doomed Rise of the TMNT in the first place. Mutant Mayhem is something different, and was put in production seperately from rise of the tmnt. It isn’t responsible for rise’s cancellation, it was the network cancelling partway through the series. Idk, I’m just tired of people complaining that this “cancelled Rise” and the general fandom around rise of the tmnt which tends to devalue the rest of the franchise that isn’t Rottmnt. (A popular example is that past series were relentlessly insulted by rise fans, especially tmnt 2012)
@BriSand1993 Жыл бұрын
Plus how quickly Rise replaced 2012 I mean the announcement came while the final episodes were still airing meaning people didn't get to miss 2012 before getting slammed with new turtles. Rise was mocked for its character designs and choices for certain changes like Raph being leader now all of a sudden the new take is Rise is actually good and is now the most praised animated series with people pretending like 2003 and 2012 are trash. I haven't seen Rise myself but a lot of people say positive things about it so I don't want to crap on something I haven't seen but I'm still salty about how quickly people forgot about 2012 when in my opinion it's the best TMNT series we've gotten.

@@victor2641 I do consider it the best version and this is coming from me who grew up with the 2003 cartoon and loved it but the 2012 cartoon took lore from other TMNT iterations and improved upon them while also telling their own unique story meaning they still honored the source material while Rise just did its own thing which I'm not saying is bad as I haven't seen that series yet but it just feels like they wanted to do their own original cartoon and got lucky they were stuck with a well known IP meaning people would check it out because it's just another version. But to me there's a fine line between doing something different to completely changing the core concept of what TMNT is and that to me is where Rise fails yet their fans get so touchy when you bring it up; like I'm not saying Rise is a bad cartoon just that it's not a good TMNT cartoon.

Watching this back to back with your Rise video (#saveROTTMNT), and having watched Sarcastic Chorus's review and WickedBinge's Mutant Mayhem videos, I found many similarities between Mutant Mayhem and Rise: - Donnie being more involved and having Rise-level snark - Mikey being the extremely emotional brother - a focus on Leo being the insecure one, with the only reason he becomes as active as his brothers in trying to see the human world being April - stay-at-home Splinter whose character arc drives the movie (interesting take being an understandable racism against humans) - the turtles looking human in clothes - the turtles moving largely as a unit in their debut - the film does try to distinguish itself from previous incarnations, simply not going as far as Rise because Rogen was an '80s fan (his Bebop voice is a reference to how Bebop was voiced in the '80s series; and I had NO idea that Wingnut, Genghis Frog, Ray Fillet, and Scumbug were preexisting TMNT characters) - AND HIS NAME IS JOHN CENA! (cue John Cena theme and cheering crowds) Also, compare the action here to in Rise.

I really liked this movie, didn’t mind the Leo and April crush thing, I could take it or leave it when it comes to any of the turtles crushing on April, in this I thought it was cute since it was pretty mild, like it didn’t really take any thing away from the characters, particularly April. For Leo, it just made him more awkward and gave the other turtles another reason to tease him. Maybe not necessary but ultimately harmless. All the references were a bit much but overall pretty good movie.
@kirbstomp866610 ай бұрын
I understand having an issue with the romantic relationship between any of the turtles and April but I thought it worked here Not because they actually had much chemistry (they didn’t really need to since both of them were fleshed out in their own right) but rather because it fills a crucial narrative function: it gives Leo a reason to leave the sewers and not be a narc. One of the biggest issues consistently with Leo as a character is that oftentimes his motives align pretty closely with splinter’s. And on its own that’s fine, good even, it shows that Leo is the more responsible and cautious one of the bunch. But in the service of that he more often than not ends up being kind of a buzzkill and teachers pet in a way that isn’t really that fun

Honestly it annoys me that people keep bringing it up because they're not siblings and they weren't raised together. Splinter is Karai's father but he only adopted the turtles which were only meant to be simple pets before certain things happened; it's not like Splinter could have ever foreseen those little turtles he bought at the pet shop would actually become sons to him. Plus Karai has her own life outside of them, it's not like when they found out she immediately started living under the same roof as them. People also want to act like these are the only versions of Leo and Karai when 2003 was teasing that as well but it was done in a respectful mutual rivalry as warriors with honor with Karai always towing that line of trying to stay loyal to the Shredder who adopted her while also trying to uphold her principles which Leo always reminded her of. TMNT 2003 doesn't focus on shipping except Casey and April but those seeds were planted if they ever wanted to go that direction with Leo and Karai. I think even in the 80s cartoon they did it but I believe for legal reasons they couldn't use the name Karai so they named the character Lotus Blossom I think but anyone can tell who she's meant to be.

I have a theory. Splinter is Hamato Yoshi's pet rat! When he tells the boys his back story he looks different than the other rats and he starts his story as an adult rat in his "prime." He even told them other rats didn't like him. His only friend was Kevin the cockroach but he died. I think Splinter started as a pet rat. It explains why he a bit softer around the edges. I am betting in the show or the second movie Splinter will have to tell the boys the truth, the reason he wouldn't want them to know is maybe because it is embarrassing to be a pet rat? That's my theory. And then The Shredder will still have killed Hamato Yoshi, so when Splinter finds out the TCRI has hired Shredder to take down the turtles Splinter will have all this fear over his sons getting killed just the way his master did.

This comment is less about the movie and more about the turtles in general but after seeing how much larger Mikey is on the first poster it gave me an idea that I think would make a cool movie series. This movie series could be live action or animated to look more real it doesnt really matter but we'd get 4 movies each movie focusing on a different turtle. Starting with Leo and his struggles of being a leader yet not fully focusing the movie on that. Follow that with a Donny centred movie for the sequel and have Donny coming to terms with his brains and feeling like he isnt as useful as the others. The 3rd movie we'd see a Raph focused movie on how he wants to lead or do his own thing having the Raph and Leo rivalry and about half way through Raph would walk away from the team and it would take splinter talking to him to Raph seeing his brothers struggle in the final battle for him to reunite. Now we get to the 4th in this lineup, a movie focused on Mikey and how he doesnt want to grow up. He likes being the class clown but this movie would have no win for the turtles, the final fight would be epic, huge the main villian for a second time within the 4 films would be Shredder and in the heat of the battle all the lessons the turtles learnt through out the last 3 movies would crumble, they'd panic, scared theyre not gonna win this fight even bringing splinter into battle to take on shredder as the turtles try to stop some device and boom. We hear an explotion "LEOOOOOO" Raph shouts as each turtle and splinter is picked off 1 by 1. Splinters using his dying breath he looks to Mikey "run" he tells his last surviving son the movie end much like the dark knight. Mikey running in the shadows away from the foot clan and the movie fades to black. A mid credit scene plays of Mikey enraged like we've never seen before, yelling in the sewers about how they never learnt after all this time they could never have been a real team. Post credit scene we cut to 6 months later and we see as Mikey removes his classic orange mask, looking at a wall of weapons he puts on a black mask. With no promise of a 5th movie being green lit 8 years go by in real time and one day we see a trailer. TMNT: THE LAST RONIN following up on the 4 past movies leading all to this 5th conclusion Mikey taking down the foot clan once and for all to avenge his brothers but hes wounded bad, the movie ending with Mikey laying down and closing his eyes one last time

I was reading the comments on Sarcastic Chorus' video, and I was genuinely pleasantly surprised to see for once a fandom that approved of a female protag being platonic friends/having a sisterly bond with the male protags, and not wanting to jump to romance. I think we need more stories of just men and women being friends so it's nice there's a fandom that supports that. I also hear the fandom loud and clear that the turtles have never really been about exploring their romantic interests, so they could take or leave with a slight lean towards leave giving the turtles love interests at the door. Imo the TMNT franchise has a great opportunity to explore themes of prejudice in greater, more nuanced detail, and I could especially see this series taking a page from the current comics run (hehe, page) and giving the mutants their own place in New York, with the turtles acting as their defenders. To that end, I absolutely think there's room to explore what a mutant/human romantic relationship might look like and where there might be outside pressures that make making it work out difficult. If they picked a mutant that wasn't one of the turtles and gave them a human partner (bf/gf/nb/whatever), and just did series episodes that weren't as turtle focused about them being cute together and making it work, while exploring themes of interracial coupling and prejudice, while still having an in to get the turtles involved (Such as if human gets kidnapped and they need to do a heckin' rescue.), and think that'd be pretty cool to see.
@gregvs.theworld451 Жыл бұрын
Also, side tangent, but I have a weird reason for not wanting to see the turtles get romantic: Biologically, I think anthro turtles get weird and gross quick when you think about it. I know that's entirely subjective, and I can't really throw stones since I crush on characters like Sidon and Kass from Zelda, but for me, maybe it's because I've seen what a male turtles think looks like but I don't want to imagine a giant turtle physically in any stretch. Still, if they go a romance route in TMNT if the characterization is good I'd get over it.

Too bad we never got a movie for the best one of all, the 2012 series, the only modern TMNT series that didn’t rely on a gimmick (powered weapons, crazy art style and character dynamic changes, or hulking them up and leaning towards the Transformers aesthetic, or looking like a messy sketchbook and making the turtles more like kids than ever before) I really do think the style and writing of the 2012 series woulda been good for a theatrical film to get attention from the general audiences. Their designs weren’t too crazy and yet were distinguishable. The acting was pretty good. The story was easy to be invested in. Splinter and Shredder were a combination of their best traits from past incarnations (now he’s a freakin Guinea pig the last 2 incarnations for some reason. And in the 2014 movie he looked like a sick kangaroo)

Without a doubt 2012 is still the best series and this is coming from someone who grew up with the 2003 series and was hesitant to ever check out 2012 but after hearing so much people talk about how good it was I had no choice but to see for myself and while it does have its problems overall there's more good than bad. I like 2012 the best but at the same time I won't ever rank it above or below the 2003 series because the way I see it 2003 walked so that 2012 could run and I prefer the human characters more as adults but I understand why the change was made for 2012 because it works for the story they're telling.

@@BriSand1993 When I say that 2012 is the best, I just mean in my opinion. And that said, I like the others as well. 2003 is my second favorite. I think 2003 would be definitive to me because it feels so natural as the TMNT style for the first 5 seasons while being darker but still being able to be for kids on… well… 4kids. I feel like 2012’s series is just slightly stylized in a way that’s not completely faithful to the look and feel of TMNT overall, as TMNT is usually a bit more gritty. BUT I think most everything else about it was so well balanced and took things I liked from past incarnations. They felt more like the classic Turtles than 2003 yet more like the 2003 turtles than the classics. It felt like the original movies in some ways. It felt like the 2007 movie in a lot of ways. It showed all the characters. Like we got to see Bishop. But also Baxter Stockman. But also Bebop and Rocksteady again. We got to see Kurai and Casey, but they also had their own version of Mona. They referenced Venus. They showed Kraang in the form similar to the Utrom yet actually showed Kraang himself in connected lore, they show their pupils but turn completely white when in fierce mode like the 2003 series. They referenced the designs of the 2014 movie. You hear a new catchphrase but still hear Cowabunga. They showed Razaar and I forgot the other one’s name. They showed Super Shredder. They referenced Shredder’s movie death. They switched Leo’s voice actor and handled the transition very well imo and he was still portrayed similarly. They showed the thing where Leo flies through the window from the comic and 2003 series. They even showed that Doctor android dude and the Triceraton that I mostly know from the 2003 series. It was just a really cool and well done combination of all things TMNT. I think going forward, they can’t just copy that so they sorta have to start applying new twists and gimmicks. Even the new movie overall felt like something I coulda seen in the 2012 series.

@@Axxidous I agree, I love both the 2003 and 2012 show but I do think 2012 is my favorite for mixing different things together from other iterations.

Donnie has been wearing glasses or high-tech googles for almost a decade. Those Michael Bay movies have pretty much contributed to Donnie's current status as an adorkable/nerdy cliche. lol

Everyday I wake up, and miss Rise of the TMNT. It was genuinely one of my favorite shows and it getting canned upsets me. I heard some people who worked on it would like a season 3, so maybe sometime..

i absolutely adored Splinter in the movie. he was such a good father and tried his best to give his kids the best while trying to keep them safe, and when he saw an opportunity for the turtles to live in the outside world, he didn’t hesitate to let them be happy despite his view toward humans

To be fair, it's not the first time a turtle has had a crush on April.

Heck the first 90’s movie had Mikey having a thing for April. Yeah he dropped it when she got with Casey but it was there. Meanwhile in 2003 it’s clear as day that Donnie got feelings for April but was too shy to actually say anything and once Casey showed up he decided to not even bother to try. The only incarnations that didn’t do a romance with April is the 80’s show (as far as I can recall) and the 2007 movie which makes sense as April’s married to Casey in that film so there’s no point in having it.

@@GoleonRise also didn't have a romance with April- iirc it didn't have romance at all

I had a blast with this movie! I came to watch it because of the animation, but the whole movie was a joy!
