I often get the question...how am I supposed to feel my emotions. Or, how do I feel my emotions when I am surrounded by people. I can't yell at them or cry in front of everyone all the time. What do I do? Tough questions, but I try to tackle them here.

This is the most important lesson to get rid of TMS pain and symptoms. Gotta FEEL those undesirable, uncomfortable emotions and PROVE TO YOUR BRAIN/MIND that IT’S OKAY. THAT YOU ARE SAFE! Thank you Dan for reminding us.

A week ago I decided i was going to wake in the morning and connect with my emotions in hope that I would have just one pain free day. I felt myself waking up and while I was in a relaxed dazed state, I began to remember old sad memories to the point where I could actual feel the sadness. I stayed with the sadness for 30 seconds or so and thought to myself " OK I feel you , you don't seem to be moving on, so I guess its time for me to get of bed". I kid you not guys, the second I sat up in bed I physically felt those sad emotions rush down my body , straight into my lower back and translate itself into the actual pain I've been dealing with !!!. I was very disheartened that this practice had actually put me in so much pain this early in the day . However it did something so much more important for me, it absolutely with out a doubt proved to me that my pain was emotional pain translated into physical pain !. And it was pretty fascinating and cool how it was able to start as images then feelings then catch the elevator straight to my back. I actually manifested it my self. This experience was the turning point for me. Its been 2 weeks since discovering Dan and tms, I'm doing much better.

Good stuff Chris. Yes, when we connect the dots like this, it's so much easier to lose the fear because we can see clearly that it is emotions. No need to be afraid. Feel emotions, soothe yourself, be indifferent to the pain. Live your life. that's the recipe.

@@PainFreeYou Hi there, do you have an e-mail address so I can ask a specific personal question related to this topic? I promise it will just be one e-mail because I already see a trauma therapist but am still in spite of that, really struggling in this area where the emotion is perpetually stuck inside. The grief. It doesn't leave no matter how much I let myself feel it.

Good advice. Keep it up. I’m a 60 year old male and I seem to resonate better hearing this sort of advice from a male perspective. Father committed suicide and died in front of me when I was 17. I did the opposite of what you describe for decades and paid the price in anxiety, depression, career, lost relationships and other ways. Wish I had heard someone like you 43 years ago!! Thank you.

Oh my this is exactly what I needed to hear!!! I love your videos. As a homeschooling mama of 3 kids the stress can get high 😂. And at times I wondered if I would have to put them in school in order to heal ( which I don’t want to!!) everyone says keep stress low so you can heal and it felt like there was a missing piece for me. I do try really hard to keep stress low for what I am control. I’ve just started teaching my kids how it’s ok to have ALL the emotions and even mommy lays down on the kitchen floor to get some good deep breathes and ground 😂. You are such a blessing. I can’t thank you enough for all your videos

I am grateful to hear a man describe this topic and process. I am a mother of three adults. My youngest son has had strange gut issues and now back pain issues. Colonoscopy and MRI both say there is no pathology. I have to wonder if those issues are due to repressed emotions. As his big sister says, "X is so nice all the time it's no wonder he's sick! He never gets angry with anyone no matter what they do!" I'll share this video with him as well as a Dr. John Sarno video and one from The Crappy Childhood Fairy about her Daily Practice. I am grateful for each of you!

Thank you so much for emphasizing that emotions are a private affair that we have every right to feel--that we don't have to act on them immediately or all the time. And thank you for the reassurance that we don't have to flip our lives upside down in some dramatic fashion to honour our feelings. Part of what was stressing me out was the thought that if I felt everything, I'd have to act on everything and make huge changes across the board in order to stay in integrity with myself. It's good to remember that I'm only human and I can take my time implementing so that I'm not overwhelmed. I can even take my time feeling, as long as I'm not running away and stuffing down my emotions.

Burst out laughing, and tried not to wake up the family....yikes! :) These are excellent tips. Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos. I've just discovered the TMS concept recently, having read a couple of John Sarno's books. Your video has been so insightful, particularly in clarifying the difference between 'feeling' and 'expressing' your emotions. I have had a very painful realisation today, triggered by a certain person - and my first thought was that I should 'have it out' with him - not something I was looking forward to doing. Your explanation has made me realise I don't need to do that, but more to acknowlege the presence of the feelings to myself. Thank you. I look forward to watching more of your vidoes.

Sarno said that feeling the emotion isn't as important as knowing it's the cause. He made the analogy of a covert operation who's cover is blown. I tell my brain that I know what it's doing and I'm not gonna fall for this. I fight my brain tooth and nail. I still have my bouts with back pain, but thanks to Dr. Sarno, they are no longer lengthy and debilitating.

And I honestly feel - I'm very spriritual and deep into meditation and inner healing, but since finding you and Dr. Sarno and really going into my feelings and giving them space, acceptance, my presence and awareness - that every time I feel my feelings it's like they configurate something small within me. That they rearrange my setting equipment in some small way to better be able to handle the situation and not just be stuck and feel helpless and hopeless. They truly are messages and friends helping me evolve. So yes you have to go through the emotions to get the updated software 😉 Even though it can feel overwhelming and scary some times. Life is just so fascinating. Grateful for your work.

I agree, Lorie, on the financial expense for therapy, doctors, etc. I know this is an old comment from 4yrs ago, but I just discovered Dan a couple weeks ago (2024:). I’ve been spending $500-$700/mo with a trauma-informed therapist, EMDR, neurofeedback. As much as she has helped me, we can’t sustain that expense. Just decided yesterday to quit the therapy and go full time pursuing TMS concepts & mindset. Even if I join Dan’s PFY group coaching, $100/mo is a STEAL! ☺️

Hey Dan. I get so confused my the complexity of this process. I lack an imagination which make it difficult to pretend or fake my feelings. Today I took your advice and start to resume activities that I haven’t done in over a year, wash the car. Wow, I was so dizzy. I took a two mile walk, which I do every day but trying to fake or pretend the spinning wasn’t happening failed. It just fed my anxiety. I feel unqualified to fix my issues. It’s easy for me to understand the will to live issues many people have. My anxiety will be my undoing. It’s so powerful.

This is truly an OUTSTANDING video Dan and I do not say so lightly. I have been through therapy and one of the best counsellors was a group counsellor who repeatedly tried to tell me this: "Feel your emotions. Say to yourself - I know what I know and I feel what I feel." He said further to distinguish between mental states and emotions when he asked how I was feeling and I said I was confused. He said "Confusion is a mental state. Emotions are not mental states. Joy, excitement, sadness, rage, anger, irritation, anxiety, fear - those are emotions. Don't think about what you're feeling. Feel it. Let yourself feel what you're feeling." Its been many years and I haven't learned from his advice so I'm glad I got the same lesson from you! Very helpful! Please continue making these videos and continue to be open and frank like this. Its a rare delight to find people who have the courage to be honest, open and real.

@@larryc1964 Hi Larry, sorry to hear your pain is this bad. My wife suffers TMS (still a long way to go), but she ended up in a wheelchair for a few months as the pain was too much to walk. Scans, doctors etc found nothing. She then started believing that the pain was emotional (after reading a Dr Sarno book and learning about tms) and forced herself to walk. A few steps at first and gradually got walking again. However, the pain is now everywhere else in the body. Still functioning though. I highly recommend reading Dr Sarno books, or Steve Ozanich and even Nicole Sachs on KZbin. You need to believe 100% that there is nothing wrong with your body. You may need psychotherapy, especially if there is an unresolved sub-conscious emotional issue. A lot of childhood trauma can affect you later in life. Good luck to you.

Months ago I was doing Silva's Mind Control for a childhood PTSD. I was counting down slowly from 100 to 0. I couldn't believe how relaxed I'd get. I've been a knot of tension most of my life. One day the countdown felt so good I speed-walked for over 1 1/2 hr and even felt good the next day. As I counted I would also cry, shake my hands, even laugh. But 3 days later after counting I got up and fell against the wall. I wondered if I had a stroke because I was RELAXED from my head to my waist. I was shocked and confused. When I closed my eyes I saw a horror show of images beyond my control and ended up in the psych ward for 2 days. 2 months later, I found Sarno's "The Mindbody Prescription" I had lost years ago and began to address all that tension that has been freeloading on my psyche. By the time I got through the introduction I wondered would I need to read more. Good Luck to All with this. BTW, YT has many amygdala relaxing audios that seem to address unconscious fears.

Thank you Dan for showing so much compassion for all of us.❤️ Just listening to this video, allows me to access my emotions. "Make friends with your emotions". and the idea of "giving a hug" to our emotions is so so great!. I have the "you're tired take a nap" brain thing, and now each time it happens, I sit with myself for some time, and I ask myself "what do I feel", and whatever comes up I say "welcome to you". It does not always appear as an emotion, but often as a sensation in my belly, and I stay with it as much as needed. I do this everyday, not resisting what is happening. And not taking a nap, is like a big victory for me. Bless you.

@amiradanceer3846, I got this idea of making friends with your emotions from a Buddhist teacher too. Apparently, this is a standard concept in Buddhist thinking i.e. to actively WELCOME all thoughts and emotions that come to you without judgment. An example is suppose you feel a sudden craving to have your favorite ice cream while you're on a diet. Instead of judging it as a bad emotion that you must resist, welcome it by recognizing it. Say "Ah, I want salt-caramel ice cream because I love the way it feels in my mouth! I am salivating already. I love the milky texture, the contrast of salt and sweet taste, the cool and buttery feeling it brings. Thanks tasting mind for reminding me!". Notice this doesn't mean you run out and get ice cream but simply acknowledge the presence of the sensation and how it makes you feel. You're already half way there to not let your emotions dominate you!

Dan I stumbled upon your KZbin channel today, what a difference it made me feel listening to you! I feel my self again, no pain today, no depression, or fear or the feeling of being broken, I finally felt myself again after many weeks of discomfort. I actually went cycling which I’ve been fearful to do. I knew my two choices were the Sarno principles (again after a successful recovery from back pain 10 years ago) or PT and stretches which I’ve been doing without much improvement. I will listen to your coaching everyday and go back to my excersizing on a daily basis, maybe no cycle racing yet, lol When this pain came on suddenly 8 months ago I started re reading the Sarno books, but your youtube coaching is much better and realy hits the ball home imo, I know I will have some tough days ahead but tms is the only thing that makes sense and now I have your coaching as a great tool. Thanks again !

I could only listen to the first ten minutes because my mind activates a very strong resistance. There is also a huge internal conflict between the very high desire to feel my emotions and the very high fear to feel them. So the best I could do this time was concentrating ten minutes upon your communication. I appreciate your explanations and the fact you are encouraging because it is something very hard for me, to connect to my emotions. I realized that for decades a super strong mechanism has been created in my mind in order to repress the presumed painful emotions, well even the not really painful ones too, and to distanciate myself from them - I mean, little by little through years and decades, to feel less and less emotions - that is to say to build a very thick"carapace" (is it the same word in English?), well the thick mobile home that the turtle wears all the time.

The good news is that "feeling our emotions" is just one of several things to do in order to end our symptoms or pains. My suggestions are summarized in this one video. Yes, this was a good talk. (For me). I was told by my doctor that Ketamine wasn’t covered by any insurance. It’s $450 and MUST be given over the entire course of treatments. The doctor suggested TMS instead. He sited it was cheaper, and pushed me toward it for insurance purposes. I’d like the KETAMINE because I took what was called “magic mushrooms” 🍄 back in 1972 and it was very helpful to me then. It worked magic and I felt so very calmed and centered after wards, when I had was given to me by real Indians, unprocessed and difficult to eat (although I rolled up a “family” of them in a tortilla, poured Leche on them to help with the taste …) eventually I vomited and off to the experience I went. Granted, I was outside so the experience was not inhibited, but if I’d died then I knew I’d lived a full life. I want that kind of boost now. On perhaps, a smaller scale. ❤it’s my entire bucket list. 😂

Dan, this information is incredibly valuable and useful to me. I have meditation for at least 2 years now and some of the practices touch upon this. My issue is pelvic pain and I have learned that if someone or something is the trigger for my symptoms I get physically away from the person or thing. I will actually tell the person, doesn't matter who it is why I am separating myself from them for the time being. If it's one of my dogs I put him in another apartment where my partner's office is until I feel better. I also ordered one of Dr. Sarno's books and look forward to reading it and listening to all of your videos. God bless you.

This is one of my favourite videos from you. I combined this knowledge with the "which specific emotion is causing my pain" but still am not 100% sure about one thing: Can I just sit and feel/acknowledge random emotions that might come up (even though you don't know why they come up or what they're related to) or do I have to go through my entire past and try to detect what emotions arise if I think of specific events, relationships, people, etc.? Because that's so damn difficult for me. I have a really bad memory when it comes to such things and its almost impossible for that reason even though I tried countless times.

Just read the book 'Running on Empty' and I'm trying to do the 'get in touch with your feelings' exercises. Stumbled across your video because I was 'in my head' as you described here: what am I feeling? Well, nothing. I do feel a pulsating sensation in my stomach, which I noticed before when trying to do meditations. My mind is a master in distracting me, sometimes I think: how the hell did this thought pop up? Completely random thoughts! At some point, I felt a slight tingling sensation in my stomach and feet and the pulsating went on at different rhytms. I think it's a skill that I need to develop indeed, I will not give up, I feel like this is key. Thanks for the information!

Thank you. Feels like it answers a big question for me. A few years ago, I found Hilary Jacobs Hendel's book, 'It's Not Always Depression,' and it changed a lot for me, because it offers a brilliant method of accessing emotions through the body. It's about a form of therapy called AEDP and a central assumption is that anxiety isn't an emotion, it's a way of blocking emotion - a very similar idea, as far as I can tell, to Sarno's ideas about a lot of chronic pain. Why would you choose anxiety rather than emotion? Because it offers the illusion of control (I must be better!) where emotions feel like a loss of control and are often about things you can't really control - and tha'ts what's really unbearable, e.g. a child experiencing the death of a parent might ward off sympathy from others in various ways because otherwise they might be moved to give way to grief and this would be an admission of the devastating loss. AEDP says, we're not kids anymore, we can handle these experiences; some of them might still feel overwhelming, but we can access them in little bites - titration, as Peter Levine puts it - and then pull back if necessary. So it advocates doing a little negotiation with yourself: can I set aside the anxiety and see what deeper feelings are there? Then you sit and pay attention to your bodily sensations and don't rush to name what comes. It's wonderful because you never need to be ground down by anxiety again. But, after the business of accessing the emotions bodily, I got a little stuck because I assumed - and aI think Hendel's book kind of reinforces this assumption - that you then needed to act out: imagine screaming at the person at whom you're angry or whatever. And I don't find this works terribly well. I had lost track of the body and all the experience could simply be there: the emotions come up, you feel them, you let them do what they want to your face etc. maybe you even cry or even laugh, but you let it pass, there's no obligation other than that. I do recommend Hendel's book, though. It helped me a lot and I imagine it could work well with Sarno's ideas.

I'm a great believer in not bottling up the way I feel. If I need a good cry, I will cry. If I'm angry or upset I will sit with that emotion and allow it to wash over me until the feelings leave. The very feelings do leave a physical mark on me like shaking with anger or cause a headache but I know that it's transitory. The worst thing we can do is ignore those emotions and burying them as repressing them will only manifest in ill health.
