It's scenes like this that made me not realize just how LONG labor is in real life until I was an adult. In movies and TV, it seems like once a woman starts having contractions, she has the baby within an hour or two. While this does sometimes happen, it is very rare (especially for first-timers like Keiko) and is associated with dangerous health complications for both mother and child. Most labors take many hours, sometimes over a day (more common with first-time deliveries), but you seldom see that depicted in media.

And because everything that happens during a one-hour TV show is supposed to take place within one hour.... I believe that about the time Keiko went into labor Ensign Ro mentioned that they had four hours before the antimatter containment field collapsed. During the ensuing time Riker removed Data's head and plugged it into the computer, where he was able to stabilize the containment field with seconds to spare. So she was in labor for at *least* four hours, probably more.

I think the term they're looking for is "Midwife" Midwives have been used for assisting births for millenia. I hear in some states they are illegal and save emergencies, all births must be done in hospitals by OB/GYNs or at the very least emergency personnel. Why, I'll never know or understand outside relatively rare complications. Women also have given birth without assistance for thousands of years and in many parts of the world, even developed countries, the vast majority of them are successful with little to no issue.
