Yo Yu NBC isn’t going to make themselves look like the *sshole Jay Leno’s actions made them look like they were. It’s like roasting yourself during a fight. This whole segment only shows Conan making shots at Leno & NBC, using passive aggressive things like, “NBC is ‘at the mercy of’,” “nothing, it seems, is off limits”, & “that one, landed hard”‘& saying things like “Leno was a lot more tame”, “viewers SEEM to view Conan as the underdog”. It’s the subtle wording like that that really shows what they were trying to do. They only showed clips of Conan poking fun at NBC, & the one clip they showed of Leno was him basically saying Conan had it easy cause NBC gave Leno less time, effectively praising NBC & glossing over the fact that it was Leno, not NBC who made the original choice to pull the plug on Conan, basically saying “yeah, I told you 5 years ago that I was going to give you the show for which you’ve worked towards having for the last 13 years over to you, but my new show isn’t automatically a giant hit, so... move to like 1 in the morning when everyone’s asleep cause I want it back!”. NBC completely left out the fact that Conan stated on the show how grateful he was of NBC & telling people not to be angry with NBC, “All I ask is one thing, and I'm asking this particularly of young people that watch: Please do not be cynical. I hate cynicism. For the record, it's my least favorite quality - it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen. I'm telling you, amazing things will happen.” Instead, they depicted Leno as the hero for “rushing in to save the tonight show”, like he wasn’t acting like a petulant child who didn’t want to share, solely cause he was NBC’s cash cow & he was loyal to the network, & depicted Conan as an arrogant, sore loser, playground bully, jerk who was making fun of NBC, when in fact, he had more than enough to be furious about, that he spent 18 years of hard work & dedication towards and for a company that abandoned him when their precious Jay wanted his show back, that no one at corporate had his back, therefore showing they didn’t believe in him, I could go on & on.

It's hard to argue against Conan, who hosted Late Night for 15 years... 15 years! And was promised the Tonight Show way back 2004 for his dedicated work at NBC, only to have the 11:35 time slot handed back to his predecessor less than an year after taking over the Tonight Show.

yeah because his numbers tanked bad... he didnt even keep half his normal viewer on the switch... nobody's fault but his and his ego.. maybe he shouldnt have forced Jay in retirement... oddly the numbers went right back up when Jay took back the show... funny since Conan is doing only 1/3 of the viewers as Fallon on a good week... but again its all Jays fault
@SneharthoDey6 жыл бұрын
Yet he is the most respected and loved late night host after Letterman because he earned the respect of the audience by solely being a comedic genius, not be relying on fake laughs and stupid game show with the help of famous guests. Letterman and Conan will be held in the highest regards in late night TV history while Leno will always have the tainted image of being a scum who hanged around in the back office even when his time was over. And look it all turned out for good. We got to enjoy Conan as a free, unfiltered, at his best on TBS while NBC is run by their favourite puppet, the unfunniest and cringy of all Fallon!
@daddyoca696 жыл бұрын
no he didnt... watch his ratings... he is in last place most of the time... he doesn't have 1/3 of what he did during the late show and its all his fault. He shouldnt have forced NBC to make the move on Leno before Leno was ready to leave... he screwed up and he will never get to where he was again for it.
@SneharthoDey6 жыл бұрын
He never forced Leno into anything. Seems like you are one of the delusionals that Letterman addressed in his aftermath take on the issue. Don't blame Conan is what liar Leno said in response to the NBC issue and Letterman asked Who is blaming Conan? And who gives a rat's ass about ratings when you are mature enough to understand comedy. Conan is leagues ahead of any current talk show host. His only peer Ferguson also left. His improvisation, wittiness is beyond fake-ass laughs and stupid game-show audience. But then how would a Leno guy understand comedy? Lol, even Kimmel and Colbert have had better viewership than Fallon's sinking ship. Alas! It's the same show that was once hosted by the great Carson
@daddyoca696 жыл бұрын
yeah he did. his last contract as part of the late show he had them put in that he would take over tonight show when he did or he was walking... this is always forgotten when told on the net.. Then he tanked the tonight show in ratings.. he didn't even bring most of his following over and thats why he got canned... he is still no where close to where he was and ratings have shown it. Funny how Leno has always kicked his ass in views.. even Fergusons old ratings whould smash what Connan does now. Fallon still does 3x more views than Connan on a bad night.. This is why Connan is on TBS and not a major network

Honestly, on NBC, Conan had a bigger audience and probably a bigger paycheck and bigger budget for the show, especially on the Tonight Show. On TBS on the other hand, he has a bit more freedom, he can do and say things that he couldn't on NBC. The thing is, the Tonight Show is probably the top of a late night career and one of the best things about it is the fact it's on NBC and that it is not so late at night, thanks to which you can have higher viewing numbers than shows which air after the Tonight Show. Conan received all this when he got promoted, and all of a sudden they decided to take away a huge part of it. In summary, for his fans, it is better that he's on TBS. For Conan and his team, hard to say.

I don't know how big he'd be on nbc had he been able to stay. Most people like dumb stuff like Jimmy Fallon and Colbert. Conan was always more of an underdog, alternative-style late show. You can't be alternative and mainstream at the same time, unless the alternative becomes mainstream, in which case the alternative to that would be cool.

NBC should retire Tonight Show Name. Fallon is weak. Look at ratings. He content

Conan is still going strong with a super popular podcast that allows him to have real convos with celebs now and not canned tv ones. Meanwhile NBC and Peacock have been circling the drain for years.

Conan is priceless and I can't wait for his show in the Fall. I haven't watched 15 minutes of the Tonight Show since his departure. No one is to blame for NBCs demise except the top execs who made this awful mistake happen.

It’s cool that this whole debacle is still the one notable thing to happen on NBC this century
@souperstar70502 жыл бұрын
That whole situation was a mess. Jay Leno should have never agreed to step down if he wasn't ready. And once he did step down he should have never agreed to come back.
@nicke.3782 Жыл бұрын
You are half right. Leno had no choice in "stepping down"... his contract with NBC specified when he could leave. You are right about one thing... Leno never should have agreed to come back. He should have gone to ABC and gotten even with NBC. As it was Conan did not do well against Letterman... can you imagine going up against Leno and Letterman? He would have been crushed.

Here in mid 2021. This popped up on my recommends. Anyway, I remember when all this happened. While i watched a lot of Leno during all his Tonight Show tenure, I am an even bigger Conan fan when Conan was doing his nbc Late Night show. Today, I rarely watch Fallon nor do I watch TBS Conan as I don't want to pay for it. I do not mind watching Kimmel or Colbert. And before the pandemic, also Meyers & Corden. All on commercial television, because it's all free. Sadly I rarely watch late night talk shows anymore for the big reason I can find more interesting stuff to ingest here on KZbin... & the Internet in general. If nothing else, I will always have my best times watching late night with Tonight Show Johnny Carson & Late Night Conan. The most memorable & funny shticks happened during those times. My dad is no longer with us & Carson was his favorite, which makes sentimental thinking about it.
@MarcKloos3 жыл бұрын
Living in the Netherlands I'm deprived from watching any North American network television. The only thing to watch Conan, Colbert, Meyers, Maher, Kimmel and SNL is KZbin! (And if I wanted to, also Corden and Fallon who I obviously don't have a need for to watch)
@knbharath59474 жыл бұрын
Conan has his way to appeal to the younger audience, which I think is difficult for a NBC(or any other network) Instead of holding on to him they got rid of him. And changing the show timings made no sense, it was clear that NBC was trying to push him over the edge. Anyway it worked out for the best for Conan, he now has an amazing show. Suck on that NBC!!

I've never really been a conan fan. Not that I don't like him or think he's not talented, he's just not for me. But I really admire how he handled this back when it happened. Most guys would just accept it and quietly move on, but he didn't take it laying down. He stood up for himself and made what was happening very public to the embarrassment of those who did it to him

It's interesting how NBC no longer has big chin man or Conan. They got nothing! I never watch NBC and never will. Conan really revived TBS. It used to be a re-run network, now it has tons of new and original programming plus the best sitcom ever: Big Bang!

Wow, these comments need to be in a time capsule. TBS definitely still sucked back then in its programming sans Conan, and now that he left, TBS has nothing except reruns.

Conans anger is 100% valid. Jay is a weasel & he did Conan DIRTY. One of the most legendary betrayals in entertainment history smh
@richstrobel Жыл бұрын
If Jay hadn't come back someone else would have taken the job. The ratings weren't there. If Jay walked away and another network gave him a job he wouldn't be the scapegoat. If the ratings were much higher they wouldn't have decided to fire Conan. NBC should have kept Jay because the show was number 1 and they let him go offering him a show that didnt last long and guarenteeing him two years which didn't happen.
@nicke.3782 Жыл бұрын
Do you know how Conan got the job to begin with ... before you call anyone a weasel?
