Just a poor ole country boy from Wilkes County NC. One of the smartest men ever to race.
@tnwhiskey687 ай бұрын
I wouldn't even saw smartest, just a forward thinker go getter! He went after what he wanted and fixed what was ailing him, so to speak. Definitely not dumb though!

Yep. Junior & Ray both stated that had the valve train of that motor not given them so many problems, and if they didn't get involved in any crash, they most likely would've won every race & made the competition cry. Shoot, they led every race that motor & car ran in.

@@howabouthetruth2157 I knew Jr's couisin well, Al Johnson. He lived here in Flatrock Mi. A farmer. Al was on Jr. Crew in 61-62. Super duty Pontiac Holly Farms cars heard the stories bout Curtiss T. Some of Jr's. Couisins still farm up here today they all worked at Fords. We knew " Old Man Ford, he owned our grain mill here in town. Have good Smokey stories too! Im Z11 fella. Richard Kieniath developed both the Mark 1's & Mark 2's programs Was a misscommunication in leadership about Mark 2's head gaskets for Fords 1.00 Mk 11's that caused ban on Racing Jan. 23rd 1963.Merry Christmas

Junior was a great driver,and a great multi car owner. From innovative parts,too bringing big time sponsors to the sport. He did the deal bringing Winston to NASCAR. Humble,confident,mechanical genius. He was a big part of making NASCAR what it is today. Rest in peace, my childhood hero.

He definitely goes down as a great! I'm sure some hated him and others loved him, but either way, his impact was massive!

They do not make men like this any more. He created the golden age of racing and it is gone now just as he is gone. This country is better for him having passed this way

I grew up by Rockingham motor speedway in the 60s, I sure miss those days, I used to go to my friends house on Sundays and the race would be on MRN. The announcers were great, Nascar was still raw back then, watching on ABC wide world of sports in the early 70s. It's dead to me now, I guess im one of the old fans that got sh!T on, in the name of progress. N. Wilkesboro, Rockingham, Darlington, can't seat enough people, the stands are empty now even before covid. Ye reap what Re sew. Junior Johnson #1.

Yes after this taping in a few years. Main reason Jr. Shut down got out sport. Nascar harass him & tearing his cars all apart trying say he cheating each & every race. I never known Jr. get caught big time as Pettys -Waltrips. God Waltrips.. I myself would been ban for life. Few other names caught big time. Now Nascar about exciting as watching golf. Jr. Got out sport really proper time. Now no matter what must be political correct.

This is fantastic! Hope you've seen this video that Fox Sports produced in 2015 about the Esquire article from 1965. Easily one of the best shows I've seen from Fox. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4S6ZIp4pKqejcU

I just don't understand why people won't just be honest about the kind of person Johnson was. He was an ignorant, manipulative, vindictive and downright nasty excuse of a man. In the end his race team closed doors because of it. It came back to bite him in the most karma of ways! But all you have to do is look at the interviews with anyone who did business with him from drivers to sponsors and everything in between and you can't come to any other conclusion. He's no legend, just a mean spirited fool who didn't care for anyone.

I understand that his attitude about things were "my way or you don't exist" and he ran a team with an iron fist! He did cheat on his wife and all that too. No doubt he did some bad things BUT his impact on the sport is massive either way!
