@@ghost500e Didn't think of that. There's a town called Burton we could've got to as well, but I don't think it has any cliffs. What's odd about all this, is the fact that we were lying on an Orion, listening to Orion, and no doubt looking at the constellation Orion, was lost to us at the time. It's only in retrospect that I noticed the coincidence!
@Ozzpot
@Ozzpot 4 жыл бұрын
@@ghost500e Yeah those were the days. Long hair and leather jackets, bleached jeans, tatty tour t-shirts... I have so many Metallica stories because I was lead guitarist in a Metallica cover band back then. We never played in front of more than about 50 people, but spent a lot of time in the practice rooms of our local recording studio just jamming. We had this running joke where we would book in under a different name every time. I can't remember many of them but they were all Metallica puns like "The Phantom Lords", "The Metal Militia" and "The Leper Messiahs". Every week we pretended to have a blazing row about what we were called in the studio's reception. It must've looked like a scene from Spinal Tap. The lead singer was an amateur rally driver too. We used to drive through the woods on the outskirts of town in his engine-swapped mini, fitted with brakes he made himself, with the lights off, blasting a cassette of Kill 'em All that had been played so many times all the treble had faded. That was our favourite late-night driving music. Pedal to the metal to the thunderous beats of "Whiplash" and "Hit the Lights", with the ever-present threat of a fatal accident keeping our hearts racing. That mini had been wrapped around so many trees he could've entered it into the Chelsea flower show. It's a wonder we survived actually, and funny to think that we were the sort of reckless teenagers I now roll my eyes at. Then I had a very dark period of mental health issues, when I felt like I was spiralling into madness and depression, which seems to have been soundtracked by Master of Puppets (although I had no addiction), and great memories of being at college too, just starting to get politically minded, cynical and angry about government as most of us were at that age, and listening to 'Justice ten times a day, no doubt adding passion to my protestations. It's hard to explain, to those less lucky, what it's like to have a band like this that has been with you your whole life, reflected everything you have felt growing up, almost as if they were writing just for you, and provided that much needed sense of solidarity. Bands these days are so fleeting, and the music so commercial, that I can't imagine this happens very much any more. Yes, I still discover new music today, but it is Metallica's music that will live with me forever. Oh, and I once hit Lars with a bottle of piss.

I was fishing at a particularly crowded spot one evening in 1988.Wasn't getting a bite,so my friend and I smoked a bag of weed and put on a cassette of Master of Puppets.The weed made my ears so sensitive ,I was hearing the squeak of Lars' drum pedals.By the time Orion came on I jumped on the roof and was headbanging my arse off.It scared the fishermen around us off for some reason,I don't know why.But by that point I was too wasted to do anything but crawl back into the car and go to sleep.A great night.

I’m crying listening to this, hearing his comments, remembering the people with whom I bonded over this music... and they’re all gone now. I see their faces everywhere, in kids bobbing their heads to AirPods, the backs of vans being packed for college, study groups surrounded by empty coffee cups. Life happens, gets in the way, yet the music plays on, carrying the memories in every note, every beat, every silence. “How have I not heard this yet?!?” “I know, dude... D’ja wanna borrow this one?”

Damage sounds great on my Infinity SM 152's driven by a Carver TFM-35, feed with a Yamaha CDC-835. The Yamaha is 118 S/N ( the avg human ear can perceive to about 115 S/N ) , the purest sound you've ever heard. The Carver amp is .01% THD and drives the 152's to about 315w per channel. This is so loud and clean your brain can barely comprehend it. Oddly enough It does not hurt or damage your ears, it is the way Metallica is meant to be experienced, until you've done this you will not know the unbelievable rush it gives you. This is about 140 SPL at 1 meter from the speaker, it literally vibrates your entire chest cavity, an experience like being in the front row of the concert !!

I just finished browsing through all of your past uploads and I noted a distinct lack of Super Junior, Finger Eleven and Within Temptation - please remedy this, lol. I'm especially curious to see your wife and/or Momma C react to Within Temptation (warning angelic vocals set to incredible goth metal/hard rock guitar music plus lead singer Sharon den Adel is incredibly beautiful. Best of all her insides match the outside; she's a wonderful person. Within Temptation has done some interesting collabs with singers from other bands, as well, which are worth checking out.). I'm subscribed because I enjoy the reaction styles of this channel; that you pay attention, think about what you just listened to and are honest in your feedback. Back on topic (sort of) fun fact: I once named my two female kittens Orion and Ktulu (Ride The Lightning album) after Metallica instrumentals because my kittens didn't have words either but could make their feelings understood just like the music in those songs. ~FM :)

BTW, for you new Metallica fans, please remember heavy metal got big with virtually NO radio time. It was mostly underground. In the 80's in the Chicago area, we had Z-Rock until it was taken off the air. I heard it was taken off the air because one of the slogans was "Z-rock kicks ass" and you couldn't say "ass" on the radio in the mid-80's. Slayer, Metallica, Megadeath, ACDC... all of them got big cuz we made copies of our cassette tapes for each other.

@@kirbysucks5001 yea, nothing really played rock. I don't remember any stations that would have played that. It really wasn't mainstream yet. We learned things by word-of-mouth and at the record store.

@@TheAdventuresofTNT Please consider doing their "To Live Is To Die". Another beautiful instrumental. It's done with Cliff in mind. I believe some of his past riff ideas were incorporated into this awesome track. Hey, an idea! Since you've done "Orion," perhaps we could see Miss T do this one? Or both? Thanks!

Those are two very last songs Metallica did with them legendary bassist, Mr. Cliff Burton At the Orion's interlude, James Hetfield is playing the harmonizing guitar solo. In meanwhile, the bass' intro for Damage, Inc. is inspired by "Come Sweet Death", by John Sebastian Bach

Cliff Burton. Bass. Nothing else needs to be said. ✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾 The reason I say that is because he was the real star on this album. His bass comes through on EVERY song.

Another song I'd recommend is Roisin Dubh (Black Rose) by Thin Lizzy - one of Cliff Burton's influences. This song has a lot of wonderful guitar interplay, and shows the band's Irish heartbeat by interweaving a lot of traditional Irish lore and melodies into it's framework.

Some great Cliff Burton (bass) moments on the ORION track. 2:12 to 2:42 Cliff showing you the riff to come on overdriven bass. At 4:28 Cliff breaks (and slows) it down. 7:05 to 7:24 is a bass solo in the mix of the guitar solos towards the end of the track. Interesting opening by Cliff on DAMAGE INC. RIP Cliff.

That middle chilled out section of Orion could easily be transplanted into a different orchestration of strings, horns, and woodwinds, and would pass for a classical composition. Maybe a little more ornamentation here or there, but it's like an exploration of theme and variation.

Every time I listen to or hear anything from the masterpiece " Master" it takes me back to Solna hallen -86,and I see Cliff banging his head to Damage inc. and just plays bass as an artist paints paintings. I was shaking when he played Orion then, and I shudder every time I hear it now.
