@@ghost500e Didn't think of that. There's a town called Burton we could've got to as well, but I don't think it has any cliffs. What's odd about all this, is the fact that we were lying on an Orion, listening to Orion, and no doubt looking at the constellation Orion, was lost to us at the time. It's only in retrospect that I noticed the coincidence!
@Ozzpot4 жыл бұрын
@@ghost500e Yeah those were the days. Long hair and leather jackets, bleached jeans, tatty tour t-shirts... I have so many Metallica stories because I was lead guitarist in a Metallica cover band back then. We never played in front of more than about 50 people, but spent a lot of time in the practice rooms of our local recording studio just jamming. We had this running joke where we would book in under a different name every time. I can't remember many of them but they were all Metallica puns like "The Phantom Lords", "The Metal Militia" and "The Leper Messiahs". Every week we pretended to have a blazing row about what we were called in the studio's reception. It must've looked like a scene from Spinal Tap. The lead singer was an amateur rally driver too. We used to drive through the woods on the outskirts of town in his engine-swapped mini, fitted with brakes he made himself, with the lights off, blasting a cassette of Kill 'em All that had been played so many times all the treble had faded. That was our favourite late-night driving music. Pedal to the metal to the thunderous beats of "Whiplash" and "Hit the Lights", with the ever-present threat of a fatal accident keeping our hearts racing. That mini had been wrapped around so many trees he could've entered it into the Chelsea flower show. It's a wonder we survived actually, and funny to think that we were the sort of reckless teenagers I now roll my eyes at. Then I had a very dark period of mental health issues, when I felt like I was spiralling into madness and depression, which seems to have been soundtracked by Master of Puppets (although I had no addiction), and great memories of being at college too, just starting to get politically minded, cynical and angry about government as most of us were at that age, and listening to 'Justice ten times a day, no doubt adding passion to my protestations. It's hard to explain, to those less lucky, what it's like to have a band like this that has been with you your whole life, reflected everything you have felt growing up, almost as if they were writing just for you, and provided that much needed sense of solidarity. Bands these days are so fleeting, and the music so commercial, that I can't imagine this happens very much any more. Yes, I still discover new music today, but it is Metallica's music that will live with me forever. Oh, and I once hit Lars with a bottle of piss.

I was fishing at a particularly crowded spot one evening in 1988.Wasn't getting a bite,so my friend and I smoked a bag of weed and put on a cassette of Master of Puppets.The weed made my ears so sensitive ,I was hearing the squeak of Lars' drum pedals.By the time Orion came on I jumped on the roof and was headbanging my arse off.It scared the fishermen around us off for some reason,I don't know why.But by that point I was too wasted to do anything but crawl back into the car and go to sleep.A great night.

Damage sounds great on my Infinity SM 152's driven by a Carver TFM-35, feed with a Yamaha CDC-835. The Yamaha is 118 S/N ( the avg human ear can perceive to about 115 S/N ) , the purest sound you've ever heard. The Carver amp is .01% THD and drives the 152's to about 315w per channel. This is so loud and clean your brain can barely comprehend it. Oddly enough It does not hurt or damage your ears, it is the way Metallica is meant to be experienced, until you've done this you will not know the unbelievable rush it gives you. This is about 140 SPL at 1 meter from the speaker, it literally vibrates your entire chest cavity, an experience like being in the front row of the concert !!

In the 80's in the Chicago area, we had Z-Rock until it was taken off the air. I heard it was taken off the air because one of the slogans was "Z-rock kicks ass" and you couldn't say "ass" on the radio in the mid-80's. That middle chilled out section of Orion could easily be transplanted into a different orchestration of strings, horns, and woodwinds, and would pass for a classical composition. Maybe a little more ornamentation here or there, but it's like an exploration of theme and variation.

Beautiful...plenty of other words for this but that's the one I'll use. Orion is my favourite Metallica tune...and if it's not heavy enough damage inc whines in just after. Angelic start...brutal ending.

Metal / rock has always been like a therapy for me . It just lets you go into yourself and get stuff out of your system . Better this than to go out to a bar , get drunk , then look for a fight . ( see what I mean )

That song let me feel that album cover image. 'All Dead, but still fighting to live' 'Fighting against the emptiness (dead)of a fully controlled system , making you believe they'are dead, but they aren't .. .for some....

Every time I listen to or hear anything from the masterpiece " Master" it takes me back to Solna hallen -86,and I see Cliff banging his head to Damage inc. and just plays bass as an artist paints paintings. I was shaking when he played Orion then, and I shudder every time I hear it now.
