I kinda see it as a kind of symbolism. Like a blooming rose. Thorax is the petals: Gentle, Beautiful, a symbol of love. Pharynx is the thorns: Powerful, Deadly, a symbol of pain. But the thorns also protect the flower as Pharynx protects Thorax. That's what I see that is.

Twilight had seasons to show that she was good leader before she was made alicorn, while Thorax was just regular foot soldier untill he became leader. Its natural that he has much more bumpy ride than Twilight.

I'm loving the changelings more and more with every episode featuring them. And Pharynx looks so cool after he transformed. Because he's colorful like the others but still pretty dark. It looks so awesome.

Does anyone else see the paraells between Thorax and Phranyx, and Tirek & Scorpan? Both royalty of a foreign nation, one kind and soft hearted the other mean and sees love/friendship as a weakness, both are brothers, and had interactions with ponies that ultimate made a difference in their relationship as siblings. The major difference here being on how they both care and mended said their relationship unlike Tirek & Scorpan. However they also share traits with Princess Celestia and Princess Luna too. Like Celestia, Thirax takes time listen in on his subjects concerns and tries to please them accordantlly. Like Luna, Pharynx knows the importance of security preparation and is a loner type. There is also the fact that they both came into power by overthrowing the previous corrupt leader and being appointed by the citizens. Celestia & Luna vs Discord and Thorax vs Chrysalis. Also apparently Changelings actually recognize the importance of therapy sessions and consoling groups. Take note Equestria.

Pharynx's design, both before and after, are very interesting. The only variations we had on the before were armoured and plain vanilla. His body type may have been the exact same type as every other changeling but he had variations in colour, something I now wish I had seen in the season 6 finale. I attribute his different shell design to the fact that thorax started to change after embracing friendship and love and because pharynx has been around so much of that same thing he started to change, but it was very gradual. His final form has given us the idea that changelings in power have greater stature than the others, something we never saw in Chrysalis' hive as she was supreme ruler. It also showed us that, even with the bright and colourful redesign of the changelings, there can still be somewhat edgy OCs made as changelings can still have dark colours instead of the bright colours every single other changeling seems to have. This makes it seem like that would be a rare trait, so I hope I don't see an ocean of 'edgy' changeling OCs that use the new body types.

I think the best surprise for me might've been at the end, when Pharynx reformed. I admit, I was hoping he wouldn't be, or it would just be one giant message for you should give into the group to fit in. But, that isn't the case here. At the very end, it's shown that you don't need to be all lovey-dovey of a changeling to go through the metamorphosis, and all you need is to let love into your heart, and Pharynx is able to do this when the other changelings finally accept him for who he is. And, even though I didn't initally want him to change, I think his new form actually works. He is able to show he's a part of the new changeling society, but his darker color scheme and style work in a way that still complements who he is without making him a completely re-written character, in form or in personality.

This episode does a lot to help give us some insight into how the society of Changelings compare to before and after Chrysalis's rule. From what we've heard from Thorax, they didn't really have much beyond just being a military force to protect the hive and feed on the love of others. This means that in terms of the level of Happiness the Changelings had was bare minimum for survival at best and likely even below that much more of the times since they were always starving. They probably didn't have anything to celebrate, games to play, or even behave as individuals before Thorax became their new king and didn't just have to work to rebuild their culture from the ground up, but actually give them a culture in the first place. With the issue of feeding on love resolved and no longer needing to be on constant guard against the rest of the world they were able to devote time to enjoying their time and expressing themselves. It may have felt a little cringy at times, but all this was still new to them and a great change since they could reach higher levels of Happiness that they were never able to reach prior. The one flaw was that they were losing their ability to defend themselves by becoming too passive. But Pharynx proved to be essential in maintaining the military side of the Changelings so that they can remain strong, but still enjoy more of what life has to offer than just mere survival. So while Thorax can be seen as the heart, Pharynx is the muscle and in a lot of ways they are like the Changeling versions of Celestia and Luna. I'll look forward to seeing how the Changelings keep developing. They've come quite a way so far and should a huge enemy arrive that even the ponies cannot handle on their own I'm sure we'll see them along with the Dragons, Yaks, and Griffons to come to their aid.

Christopher Snape Yeah. The only time we even heard talk of something was the season 7 premier when Thorax mentioned the Changeling Gorb Fest, though we don't even know if that existed before Thorax took charge. The way this episode makes them sound they were nothing more than parasites that fed on everyone else and offered nothing in return. So to the rest of Equestria, the Changelings would be a species that everyone would have been better off without till they were given a more peaceful way to live.

That has to be my favourite aspect of this episode as well, that everyone was in the right and in the wrong to some level. I also feel like this is the writer's addressing the criticisms of the Changeling redesign. Not only can Pharynx be a stand-in for those who were put off by the new colourful changelings, but Prince Pharynx's Design seems to be a less garish and more immediately appealing for his darker colours and less prominent antlers. Also, let's not dismiss how adorable the new Changeling society is :3

These are my thoughts, enjoy them: This episode was great as it discussed how the changelings are adapting to their new lives as well as the many hidden morals. 1, the leadership of Thorax that you lightly touched on intrests me too. 2, the disedence between the changelings adds to their characters as a swarm but each individuals. 3, how even a peaceful nation has to learn to defend themselves to keep that peace alive. You can't have peace in this world without learning to defend yourself from others trying to shatter that peace. 4, Starlight admitting being a dictator opens her character arc up even more, being able to relate to others with the same background. More info of why I have grown to love Starlight more than any other of the main cast. 5, if all the changelings have been reformed to Thorax's knowledge, how does Chrysalis plan to take her revenge? And what do the changeling young look like now?

I really don't have much to say to the episode. It was nice to see a flashback and Pharynx's design stands out from the rest of the changelings. I was not a fan of Trixie in this episode because she seemed more rude. The molebear was an odd-looking creature, but was a sight to see. I just have one question... What kind of creature did Pharnyx turn into? That thing was awesome.

Personally I like the more odd looking creatures like the molebear, because it helps the world of Equestria feel more alien and unique compared to a more standard and traditional fantasy setting, it is why Morrowind's enviroment was considered one of the best designed in the elder scrolls series.

"too prissy" isnt a thing dear. on several occasions we have seen thorax ready to beat someone up because they posed a threat to his friends. im pretty sure him trying to lure the molebear away was more because he understood that the creature was literally just hungry and other creatures being near their food made them grumpy (dogs will sometimes bark at other dogs if they are near their food bowl) so he was trying to do the right thing and make sure neither party his hurt. and then his brother is in danger and he was fully prepared to beat the molebear up badly. he literally turned into a bear to fight a dragon lord to protect spike.

I was a bit surprised at the ending of this, for a moment I thought maybe Starlight might call in maybe Princess Celesita and Luna because there are many MANY similarities between the two brothers and the two sisters. Thinking back on it now i realize its kind of silly but i really do hope that there might be an episode where they interact some how because im kind of curious to see how they would react.

I actually found this episode kind of interesting in that it almost got to the point of toxic masculinity vs its complete opposite, especially with Thorax's flashback. That scene came off very much as a story of a male not acting how males were expected to act, even to the point where their brother, who protects them from others, still picks on them for essentially "being too wimpy". Even his line about him needing to grow a thicker hide is very reminiscent of that. Then there's the opposite, where people are so focused on talking out their feelings and prettying up the place that they've almost lost the ability to defend themselves, not knowing how to face a problem anymore. In the end, I found the lesson here to actually be pretty interesting, about finding a balance between the two sides.

That's my favorite line as well, it's so hilarious. It was kinda shocking for me though since it sounded a bit TOO MEAN which indirectly promotes bullying. Even more shocking is when he does the "why you hitting yourself?" which is a bully technique. I maybe thinking too deeply into this but I like that the writers are taking brave steps into making the stories more daring like these episodes rather than following the strict "For Little Kids Only" rating rules which gives most writers a lots of limitation (A.K.A.: Limiting their full potential).

I'm just saying that the way he did these negative actions are quite humorous that it kinda "Indirectly" promotes it subconsciously. Also some people Might Misinterpret some of his actions to be somewhat acceptable to do after all because he is one of the "good guys" (and maybe becoming popular) in the show which will somewhat validate that what he did isn't totally wrong. When I say negative actions I meant : mean name calling and quit- hitting- yourself taunt which is similar to what common bullies do.

+Ash Blackwind I doubt that it would actually give them a positive attitude on bullying. I think that if anything, the greater danger of this scene was Pharanx doing something nice and something bad immediately back to back. I could maybe see a child not wanting to stand up to friends or family members who treat them badly because they are occasionally nice to them as well. But it's usually not one episode that makes up their mind though, it's how many times they see this kind of "moral" repeated. And I don't think it's a thing you see too often, so it's fine by me.

One of my favorite scenes was the Feeling Forum when they're all complaining about Pharyx when out of the blue, one Changeling complains about his soup being too hot and when the others look at him in confusion, he just says ' What? I thought the Feeling Forum was to share our problems' Also I like that they made Pharyx's new form similar to Thorax, almost like they want him to be second-in-command if something should happen to Thorax.

I like this episode, we finally get to see how is the changelings's new life style, i rewatch all the season 7 episodes so far, and i realize there are many times talk about wars and dictators, technicly equestria is making allies (dragons, yaks, changelings, etc), also chrysalis still mising, it may sound a crazy and stupid theory, but it kinda feels there's going to be a war or at least an epic battle.

I too would like to see some real conflict either between the old and new changelings, or some kind of civil war with the return of Chrysalis. But sadly, such things are too dark for this show, despite what kids media has shown in the past, and even what this show has done... oh well. But if you are interested in a more serious take on changelings in the form of a well-written story, involving stuff like racial tension (book 1), intra-species values conflict (book 2), and even civil war (book 3), I highly recommend the fimfic series called "Of the Hive" (bit.ly/2vUhf9P) by Law Abiding Pony. That deals with the national relations Equestria has with other changeling hives (well, one in particular) after Chrysalis invaded the first time. Essentially, one of the other hives wants to be peaceful with Equestria, but the ponies are afraid of anything to do with changelings, so a whole political and cultural adventure takes place over what is now four books. In my opinion, that series is the best representation of changelings I have ever read. It deals with some mature themes, however, so I caution against younger readers reading it.

Am I the only one who thinks they got too peaceful too fast? I would think there'd be a lot more changelings like Pharynx considering that they went from one culture to its exact opposite in just a few minutes. Even if Thorax managed to be more assertive, I would still believe that it would take many generations before everychangeling accepted friendship to the level that they are now. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't even see one competitive sport among all of their activities.

The placement of this episode is very close to last-last week's episode. It barely leaves any time to flesh out (in our mind) the reformation of the remaining changelings when Torax says there are still some left. It could also mean some of them went back with Chrysalis but no one said anything about it.

This episode hits home for me in a certain personal way. Why? Because I had to face the acception of giving up on someone when I didn't want to. I'll try to keep this short. I hardly ever thought that I'd ever give up on anyone. I saw that no-one is bad just because. That there always was a motive, a personal struggle or issue they've had that makes their actions understandable or relatable. Nothing was so black and white. Most people whom I've had trouble with in school, I've eventually understood and we'd be able to communicate on some level. However, one person had always seemed uncomfortable around me, and would reject me whenever I tried to get to know him. Several of my friends would say that it was best to just let him be, and believe that he was acting the way he was just because he was rude. But, I kept trying to understand his motives, struggles, for YEARS. I kept thinking "There HAS to be a good reason as to why he keeps acting like this. I HAVE to understand." It wasn't until near the end of High School that he explained why he doesn't like me. He told me that it was just because he just didn't like me. It didn't matter what I did, whether it was good or bad. If it was done by me, he wouldn't like it. After all the fights and frustrations we've went through, after hearing that as his explanation, I had trouble swallowing that reason. But in the end, I just accepted that explanation and gave in that he would never change his opinion on me. I just gave up on trying to help him, and let things be the way they are. I honestly kinda wish I didn't give up on him, that I could've done SOMETHING more to fix this. But I just couldn't. I don't even know if I should be typing this, cause it looks like I'm calling him out online, as if I don't forgive him or that I want the internet to go after him. But I don't! Even though I know I couldn't have done more, I WANTED to have done more. To help. I do hope he's taking good care of himself out there. That he doesn't hurt himself anymore.

The flashback of Thorax and his Pharynx did surprise me a bit as well. He was standing up for him for getting picked on but until he made Thorax hit himself a few times. That fight scene when they're making that big creature hurt itself just like the flashback. Trixie was funny at times in this episode.

On the subject of the Changeling culture change: I really like fact that there cultures change to being basically the opposite of their war like hunter society logically follows as an overcompensation for their cultures awful past. I think the big difference between Twilight's and Thorax's situations is that Twilight was given plenty of opportunities to develop her leadership skills before she became a princess. Thorax was thrust into the role much earlier on in his development, and so he has to develop the leadership skills on the job,

I liked this episode. It was cool to get a look into the new changling culture and the interactions between Starlight and Trixie were entertaining! This reminds me of the Royal Problem episode too. I am looking forward to more episodes and the changling civil war if it appears in the future.

There are normally too many other princesses for Twilight to practice the leadership skills and qualities for which Celestia lauded her in 'Magical Mystery Cure.' Wasn't the only time she had to step up in 'Princess Twilight Sparkle' when Tia and Luna had vanished? Otherwise, the only thing she has done as the Princess of Friendship is go on Map Quests whenever the map has sent her. By contrast, there's only one ruler in the Hive, so Thorax has to learn to be a good leader even though he spent most of his life as an outsider. His is clearly the greater challenge.

1:17 this is why it annoys me that starlight gives up so fast. Like Pharynx had only really been reasonable up until that point and they only tried to convince him once. It would of been nice to see a montage of them trying to convince him so it didn’t make starlight look bad. I think the writers were trying to discuss gender in the safety forum with the green changeling talking about colors. I'm genderfluid myself and it sounded pretty similar to some of my thoughts. Not sure if that was the intension but it felt kinda nice that it might have been their motives.

I love that they shown how much has changed for the location and culture ever since the changling reformation. The hive now has plantation growing instead of being a wasteland and more activities like theater and talking about your worries are available for the changlings. The MLP universe is getting a bit interesting😊

It's so weird that now there's no driving force to the changelings, they're just... there. Not needing anything must be boring as hell. I wonder is that's what drove the Gems in Steven Universe to become a galaxy-conquering race in the first place. Good thing they've been finding more constructive ways to waste their time, in this case. However, Pharynx has a point: the hive has been sitting there doing nothing and now it can't protect itself. You know if some greedy ruler from a distant kingdom hears about that they'd want to get their hands on all that free labor force lying there unattended. They need military defense for that.

It's a perfectly fine explanation for them quitting parasitism and a good message overall) so much as the fact that the writers took that nowhere, when it could've gone in interesting ways. Immediately I can think of an "adjustment" mini-arc where the changes learn to live outside Chrysalis' tyranny (you'd think heads would butt after a massive change in their society). Learn how to be individuals, not drones, and live with differences within their own little community. Maybe sneak in a metaphor for life after abusive parenthood, because that topic seems to be all the rage in cartoons in these last few years (not to mention the commentary that could come of Chrysalis using others' literal emotions to her own benefit and no one else's). It could have been great. Instead we got a "they're good now. We're done here" type of deal with Pharynx's single working braincell being their only conflict since being basically liberated (in a political sense). I still love Friendship is Magic for all it's done for me, but one of its faults is consistently failing to deliver compelling stories in an otherwise fascinating world. It's downright heartbreaking at times.

About the whole "they're good now, we're done here" deal, It reminds me of the issue with Luna. After she got hit by the rainbow and forcibly purified, that was it. They didn't touch on or properly resolve the issues that led her into becoming NMM. Just fire a rainbow at her and apparently she is suddenly fine being in Celestia's shadow.

Trixie is always a win. I love her ego in this world of everyone being friends and love and peace and friendship. Also, Pharynx started off really awesome. Then they "reformed" him too. And i had such high hope for an awesome changeling like how they used to be. At least his personality remains though, so i can count that as a half win. With Discord gone, Tirek gone, the Sirens gone, the Dragons gone, the Griffons gone, Sunset Shimmer gone, Starlight Glimmer gone, Nightmare Moon gone, Daybreaker gone, Sombra gone, Windigos gone, Timberwolves gone, the Ursa Major gone, and now the Changelings gone too, it seems all my hope rests solely with Chrysalis for a decent antagonist for this show.

What I actually really liked about the episode is Phranx's "reformed" design. Most of the time, you see really bright pastel colors with the changelings and it always looks just a little bit off. I'm getting *used* to it, persay... but that doesn't mean I'm fond of it yet. With Pharanx, while they still stick to the pastel design, the darker colors actually fit more in my opionon. Idk, it just...blends in more to persay but at the same time still has a uniqueness. Kind of like staying similar to the original changelings, but defintely showing a difference. I feel like if they did that with all the changelings - a bit more darker pastel colors - it would've fit a lot better, and we also wouldn't have as much of a civil war with the new changeling designs XD Well least if anyone wanted to go canon with the show with their OC but didn't like the bright pastel colors, they now do have the option to go darker if they wish. (Not that they didn't have the option before, but some like sticking canonly to the show while others don't mind being looser or even going full on unique that has yet to be seen)

now that you mention it, i'm starting to see a pattern o.o. seems like we had so many seasons focus on the mane 6 that other groups of characters is starting to form their own story. Throax and the changeling, starlight glimmer forming her own circle of friendships, like maud, and trixie, and so on, and perhaps ember which may possibly include spike. just starting to see like in the end, the show is forming unique story focus on other characters, and possibly forming groups to build up for a more powerful event that maybe the ponies can't handle by themselves? o.o

What I found very disappointing about the episode was that like always, only premieres and finales are allowed to take up the time for two episodes. I think this would have been a lot better with time to flow from one character choice to the next, instead of rushing it.

pharynx saw that the changelings were forgetting how to defend themselves. sometimes in life you have to fight whether it be physically to escape someone or something, or emotionally to not let someone's words effect you or to try and stay who you are sometimes the fight is short and sometimes it takes years

I personally was slightly disappointed that the "group of rogue changelings" was dealt with off screen between the other episode and this one, but that's neither here nor there. It was nice to see that Pharynx didn't have to embrace the saccharine, lovey-dovey way of life the new changelings are doing in order do feel welcomed in his home. (Btw, that "safe space" forum was terrifying to me.) His reformed design, while still not as good as the original changeling design, was at least nice with the cool color scheme, mixing subdued pink and purple with a darker chitin color... like a pink dress shirt can still look masculine when paired with a black suit. That said, if what some of us want to see here with the changeling conflict is stuff like racial tension, intra-species values conflict, even to the point of civil war... we will certainly not be getting that in the show. However, I have been rereading a fimfic series by Law Abiding Pony called "Of the Hive" (bit.ly/2vUhf9P), which deals with the national relations Equestria has with other changeling hives after Chrysalis invaded the first time (essentially, one of the other hives wants to be peaceful with Equestria, but the ponies are afraid of anything to do with changelings, so a whole political and cultural adventure takes place over what is now four books). For anyone interested in a more serious take on the changeling species and racial tension that comes after a full-on attack, that series is, in my opinion, the best representation of changelings I have ever read. I would not recommend it for younger readers, though, as it deals with some mature themes. In short, this was an interesting story in concept, but like a lot of S6 and S7 episodes, kind of underwhelming in execution.

am i the only one wondering why they made Pharnyx with such a unique color palette compared to the rest of the drones? and whether specifying him as Thorax's brother had any real significance besides making him the Luna of the changeling hive? up to this point, most everyone assumed Chrysalis was the mother of all the changelings, which would make specifying Pharnyx as Thorax's brother completely pointless, as all those changelings would be siblings. perhaps this means the changelings aren't all Chrysalis's children, and the drones breed amongst themselves.

I agree! Also, not to be "that guy," but his name is Pharynx. You know, as in the organ at the back of your throat that helps in eating, breathing, and speaking? I'll admit that I find it is a bit odd that he wasn't named after a traditional insect body part like some other changelings might be (i.e. Thorax), but it works nonetheless. As for the episode itself, it was a bit lackluster for me. I understood what it was going for, but it felt like the story had a lot more to offer but wasn't able to execute it entirely well. I did, however, very much enjoy the design of Pharynx's new form and how it coincides with his broodmate Thorax's, specifically with the pseudo-deer antlers. Maybe there's a chance that Pharynx could be some sort of prince to play in to Thorax's role of what I'd assume to be king and could help him lead the new hive. I'm just hoping that Pharynx won't turn out to be a one-off character used solely to represent the small rebellion against Thorax's unappealing rule, and that he will actually have a role to play later on in the season and possibly in seasons to come. Time will tell, I guess.

Elijah Foltz it's alright, I didn't look up how Pharynx's name was spelt, although this is coming from a high schooler who didn't look up something like some noob. As for his position, I think that him being some kind of prince is actually pretty accurate, considering that he's now officially the only other Changeling with antlers. I guess that's what happens when you start looking like mythical deer, which I think is something else entirely because of how regal they look. My OC is actually part deer herself even though neither of her parents were part deer to begin with. Quick question, though. Are you familiar with the Fire Emblem series?

What would make for an interesting story was if there was another changeling leader, with a new variant of changelings that could gain power through other means than just love. This could make for an interesting dynamic, especially if this "hive" had neutral feelings for ponies, which would then put another "peg" in pony/changeling interactions. And more importantly: 1. they don't become "reformed" changelings, because they never were "evil", they just have other views and goals. 2. They are neither leaning to Crysalis's side, nor the pony side. Their goal is merely to live and thrive. oh, and also (this is leaning into headcanon fanfiction territory), the leader is forme the same "hatching" generation as Crysalis, meaning he's in the leader hiarchy, a patriarch of a changeling hive. Could make for some interesting interactions

This was actually a GOOD episode, and with an effective social message. The changeling have turned into a collective safe space were only the gayest activities can take place, and the one guy who is focused on fighting skills, self defence tactics and practical decor is shunned as "unconfortable precence". They all cheer when he leaves until they realized he was the only one still capable of defendim himself and the community. In the end they reintegrate old traditions because they are still fundamental, even if they are part of a past many seems intent to forget Pastel ponies getting political again

Hey Dr. Wolf i was looking at these two thorax and Pharynx and something dawned on me- omg i just realized that these two are the 'male versions of Celestia and Luna.' Thorax is like Celestia never wanting to give up on their sibling even though they have been in a bad way. (even though thorax is the 'younger one' hes still looks like the older one of the two of them.) Pharynx is like Luna has been in a bad way and slowly came out of it; along with he cares for his bother just has a little bit of a hard time showing it at first. (even though he is the 'older one' his height is that of Luna's along with his darker coat.) I really hope they, in the future do an episode with the four of them together. Something I want to see in Season 8 is where Twilight actually takes on royal duties as a Princess, and how her new role affects her friends as well as Ponyville, and possibly the rest of Equestria. We have seen a few moments where Twilight takes part in ceremonies and overseeing the Equestria Games with Celestia, Luna, and Cadence. But other than that, we haven't really seen Twilight take on any significant leadership roles. It would certainly lead up to some very interesting character development, conflicts, setups and whatnot.
