The horrors of war all starts from one person's desire to control at all costs enabled by those who subscribe to his ideologies or just obedience. Excellent movie, great actors. I can fully appreciate why so many veterans do not talk about the horrors of war.

We see it. We feel it. We are deeply moved...yet still we haven't learned how senseless war is. Until we grow up as 'individuals,' and know what we really are, this sort of behavior will likely continue.

I'm a Japanese university student who major in Southeast Asian Studies. I'm studying about Thai-Burma Railway, " the Death Railway". I have read many articles like books written by POWs, movie( " the Railway Man"), a documentary of translator Nagase(he is in this movie too) etc... I strongly believe this movie's content is truth since it is based on the autobiography of an Allied POW. We Japanese students have never taught about " Death Railway" (neither comfort women, nanjing massacre etc ) in the compulsory history classes. And some right-wing Japanese say it's not the truth, it is exaggerated. ( I saw such comment here) This is a really big problem. I want people all over the world to know this situation about history education in Japan.... As a student who major in Asian Studies and wish to improve relationship between Japan and Asia, I'll study more about history even though it hurts me a lot. Thank you for the wonderful film.

A man should not be defined by the actions of his nations past, but rather his acknowledgment of past wrongs and his intentions to seek forgiveness for those wrongs, although they not be of his doing and he also should not be held accountable for those past wrongs but be forgiven by those whom were wronged. If true forgiveness is sought then they should be truly forgiven.

Was I supposed to be impressed by that denouement? I wasn't. The Americans were far too soft on the Japanese war criminals and many more of them should have been given salutary punishments. Only the Russians dished out the kind of punishment they really deserved.

there is no honor when you are a POW, rights are not recógnize...no matter who you are...race..
To be honest, these tortures were "only" light to average warcrimes. In reality, Japanese tortures were a lot more brutal than shown in this movie. When you investigate of what warcrimes Japan did in ww2, you will be truely shocked at what they did, back then. Raping European women, hanging people up at their fingers, and much, much worse.
