In this moving talk, social justice advocate Mounina Tounkara shares how we can adopt the African philosophy of Ubuntu -- a perspective of interconnectedness -- to change the way we see one another and eradicate the cruel and unforgiving ways people treat each other based on their origins or appearance. “We are all interconnected,” she says. “Racism and discrimination against one person hurts every person.”
About the TED Institute: We know that innovative ideas and fresh approaches to challenging problems can be discovered inside visionary companies around the world. The TED Institute helps surface and share these insights. Every year, TED works with a group of select companies and foundations to identify internal ideators, inventors, connectors, and creators. Drawing on the same rigorous regimen that has prepared speakers for the TED main stage, TED Institute works closely with each partner, overseeing curation and providing intensive one-on-one talk development to sharpen and fine tune ideas.

The concept of Ubuntu, "I am because we are," is such a powerful message that the world needs to hear. Not only hear, but embody. Though there are many things that separate us, we are all interconnected in so many ways. Thank you, Mounina!

Thank you for making this video. I had never heard of Ubuntu, but from what you have described it sounds amazing. I am now going to research it more. Thank you again. Though I am sorry for the challenges you have faced. And for the passing of your grandmother she sound's like an amazing woman. ❤

Nina, what a powerful talk you gave. Very proud of you. We all could use more empathy in the world. I love taking our dog to the local dog park. You get to see what is right in the world. Different breeds, different sizes, and different colors of dogs playing with one another. Why can't we humans act like dogs? Why do we need so much hate? If you want to hate something? Hate Cancer. Hate injustice. Hate a pandemic. We do not need to hate each other. We need more positiveness than ever before. Thank you Nina for sharing your great message.

I fear prejudices and stereotype will not end any time soon of human biases and cognitive dissonance. Some people are proud of the hate and ignorance while trying for tradition of it. Sad but slavery has not ended even if illegal either. Still it is good to effort stopping actual such harassment and hate crimes.
