For me, KZbin is a fascinating world where I can learn anything, from fixing a toilet to fixing my video. Self-help, self reliance, how to, inspiration and perspiration...it's all there...and it's free! University education? Who needs one...just surf KZbin for all the answers. I've literally taught myself most everything about creating a KZbin channel and how to make it thrive. However, the one question I'm super-confused on is the subject of "finding your niche"... to niche or not? That's the question...and I hope my KZbin subscribers and viewers can help me find the answer. Thanks for all your continued support...and Merry Christmas from the History Mystery Man!

Don, also as to not watching a complete video, sometimes things just pop up where I need to stop watching to take care of something urgent. Its' not because of uninterest.

Hi Don. First, hope you have a very, very Merry Christmas. You put out some great food for thought in this video. I was lucky enough to enjoy the Eldora 4-Crown up in Turn 4 with you, my lady Jen, and that young boy you mentioned in your video. Certainly a fun and special evening for me! As you know Don, you hit upon 3 of my favorite hobby passions: Great Lakes Ships, Racing, and Small Town America coupled with history. Geez, for me I enjoy everything you produce. Literally everything. Selfishly for me, I don't want you to change a thing. Oh sure, better equipment would be nice....and just might improve the experience. But again for me, I had zero issues with what you've done. I'm so caught up in the content, I honestly don't even think about anything else. I'm serious. I recommend just continue doing what makes Don happy. When you stray from that, I think you'll loose the spark....and it'll become like a job! You don't want that. I do see the point you made about some who subscribe for racing content....getting a bit upset having to watch say ships. Sure you could limit yourself to one subject, but that would be a big mistake in my judgement. Why, because you enjoy more....more passions. I'm with you on your quandary. It's not easy. Once again, do what makes Don the happiest. Only you can answer that. I can't, no one else can. Continued success in 2024 and beyond. Chuck and Jen in Columbus

Thanks again Chuck. You make a great point on the possibility of losing the spark. Given the time I continually put into this...if I got away from some of my core interests, I could see me getting into the 'struggle mode' and/or a good old-fashioned rut... so thanks for that. I've always appreciated your wise input, and always grateful for it. Merry Christmas to you and Jen...a safe one too! See you at the track...HMM

I’m 39 and I really enjoy your content. As far as the niches I’m much more into racing than history. I do however like getting a little bit of history of the small towns that are home to the racetracks that you visit. Especially like seeing the drive through town. At the track anything behind the scenes gets my attention. You’re pit interviews are my favorite, you ask interesting questions. Some ideas for your future stories to tell- those who work tshirt trailers, concession stands, track prep. Driver spouses/partners, race directors. I think iPhone quality is solid. Thanks for the videos!

Thanks Jeffery! I appreciate your truth...so much great info here. Cool...you like those small town drive-throughs...first I'd heard that one. You know...I've wanted to do those outside stories...the trailers, concession stands, track prep...all that stuff. I love telling those stories. I want to do more of it for sure. Those folks deserve the coverage too. When I go that route, I hope people watch it...thanks! HMM

Thank you for the Christmas message. I think you are a great communicator. I understand the concept of having a niche. I've never studied maritime history before, even through I'm only 2 hours away from Duluth/Superior. Those videos peaked my interest enough to want to start visiting some of the museums in the great lakes region. I never even knew that I might be remotely interested in this topic until watching those videos about the Fitz. I've watched a few of the other videos, but keep gravitating back to the ones covering the Fitz. Other content creators in your situation that cover more than one topic have separate channels for each area of interest. That keeps things organized, and you would most likely build a larger audience in aggregate by covering these topics in separate channels. I look forward to viewing more of your content in 2024. Have a great holiday season!

Thanks Craig...I so appreciate your valuable input. I'm listening; I can assure you that. Honestly, I just don't have the umph to start separate channels...what I'm doing now uses up all of me. I'll probably just stay as is...come what may. However, your message of separating the channels makes perfect sense...and a great idea. I'm planning a trip to your area in 2024...to Duluth and Superior...Whitefish Point of course too. Merry Christmas! HMM

My advice would be to just keep doing what you’re doing, I’ve never believed in putting limits on myself, if you have ideas, try them…. And I will say that you’ve certainly drawn me into the maritime videos, but some of your interests are definitely similar to mine, like the racing or Gettysburg, my wife and I visited Gettysburg several years ago, I would love to go back! So much amazing history there!! Keep up the great work and I really look forward to what you have in store in the coming days, I really appreciate what you are doing!!

The joy as a content creator comes from things YOU love and enjoy ect. Also from shooting that video and photos and then editing it all together to create YOUR piece of work. Now folks can subscribe and watch what interests them, whether it's racing or the Fitz ect. But never change who you are, your interests or your videos. Because when you do then you become a slave to the algorithm, beholden to the naysayers ect. You make fantastic videos, your personable, interesting, well spoken and enjoyable to watch. Share it all and folks will watch what they watch. Just be true to your interests and style and so on.

Whoa! This may be some of the best advice I've ever received...thanks for your feedback and encouragement! And that's just how I see it in regards to creating. Hello from New Zealand! I started watching your channel for the racing content new and old but it’s been a real education for me on the other content. I knew nothing if the Great Lakes and very little on small town USA. Certainly know a lot more now and appreciate your work. I watch mainly on my phone so I’m not sure improved video is a thing I need but I imagine you can see how your content is mostly viewed which will guide your future investment. As far as experts, my experience in the digital world is that most are learning as they go and are no more expert than people who are using the technology daily, so not sure if their advice is one I’d follow, do what you love doing and that will shine through. Keep up the great work 👍🏼

I started watching your channel because of the racing, but I enjoy all of your content. It’s cool because I’ve been able to see people like the Kinser’s, Sammy Swindell, and others tour my local tracks. I also enjoy your historical content. My uncle is a Titanic historian, and my mom, he, and their family grew up near the Ogdensburg, area. I’ve had a lot of interest in the big ships including the Edmund Fitzgerald, over the years. This past fall my wife and I visited Tibbett’s Point Lighthouse, in Cape Vincent, and in 10 minutes found out how fast the weather can change there. I say it’s your channel and to do what you enjoy doing. It’s nice that you do things kind of seasonally. I think in the fall racers generally like a break. In the winter to early spring it’s nice to see the interviews with drivers and mechanics. During racing season it’s nice to see current event content. Some topics will naturally interest more people than others, I think many more people would watch if they knew about your channel. I’ve seen where KZbin content creators get much more of a following by collaborating with other KZbin channels. I always look forward to your content. Merry Christmas, and keep up the great work!

A Merry Xmas 2023 and Happy New Year from around the world Don, a pleasure to have met you and this Kiwi(New Zealand) luvs all your content, from dirt Speedway, Great Lakes, Small Town America, American History, it’s all fantastic. What makes your videos interesting is YOU, its your personality that does it, and yeah its probably a Baby Boom thing? but I see young people taking interest! Your auto racing interviews have made relative unknown people more famous, Rolle Beale, Frank Smith, Allen Barr(RIP), CJ Rayburn, Jack Hewitt and many others, you told their stories and its now and forever on(or in) the internet world. Your Karl Kinser footage is my favourite and what a character he is, plus others like the Sheppard’s of Paragon, etc its all great content so don’t stop what you are doing and keep doing it "your-way" as its way better than many so called "professional" TV interviews. Oh PLEASE be YOU .! I ENJOY YOUR VARIETY . So you were told kinda what I was told when I was 21- my Harmonica playing idol told me I was a Nothing, & I was tone deaf and I'd never play the harp. He did this in a room full of people & I coulda crawled underneath the carpet as I left that house I put my harmonicas away for 10 years- never touched my lips....A good friend encouraged me to get them out - he even said," you have what a lot of musicians wish they had- you play from the heart". Well I got em out again and I learned trying to play like OTHERS didn't work for me & when I played what I do my style-- just being Me, well- I have played with Grammy award winners, people in movies & Hall of Famers..being me.. Hint hint .. You are like a fine wine---be YOU... Your work is from your heart !!!! Not everyone uses the same spices to cook with... Be You......& God Bless

Thinking about your wonderful compliment - thank you.. I never planned on writing a comment- ok-- in fact I stoped your video before watching all of it-- my heart was led to say & share those thoughts, off the cuff....kinda like one of your posts about LEAVING the race track and that long ride home - I remember you changed some complimentary background music a few times, Blues a couple times, that live band you saw, too- variety...small towns in America-- hello, the back bone of our country, ( wasn't about racing), I think you attended a funeral and blessed us with some of Your Journey (s)..& the Edmund Fitzgerald, that was So So Close to the source presented in such a class act way, I lived in the U. P when it went down and I messaged someone who loved up there then took, we had wonderful chats, I remember a lot more about this world thru You . I've never felt a scripted written out dialog from your posts, off the cuff & from Your Heart.. Merry Christmas and We Are looking forward to what you have for us in 2024. God Bless

Here are some of my long, late, night rambling thoughts on this subject. I'm 33 so it sounds like I am a bit younger than your average viewer. My opinion is is keep following your passions You can't limit them. The knowledge and excitement you bring to your videos is what draws in and keeps the audience engaged. Personally, I mainly come for the maritime videos since I am from just north of you in Monroe county so I find the tales of the Great Lakes shipping extremely interesting, but I am also a history nerd like you so I enjoy your history films as well, and if there is a video on a subject I am not interested in I will pass on watching it. To me, it doesn't matter if you do a thousand videos in a row with Capt. Darryl or a bunch of racing or a different subject. If you enjoy what you are doing that is what matters. Just keep learning, expanding your knowledge and have fun that's what matters. Your niche is who you are and how you cover a topic. You don't need to focus on one thing just because the "Experts" say so, if you focus on what you enjoy success will come. Just remember, you can please some of the people all of the time but you can't please all of the people all of the time. Just keep on the path your following on, you're doing great.

@HistoryMysteryMan at 33 I am still considered a millennial. A few more thoughts for you. Maybe change the structure of how you post a bit. For example if you post a maritime video it could go up and Monday for a Maritime Monday (except for the month of November then it is different with all of the shipwrecks covered) choose a day when racing videos go up etc etc with your different topics covered. I've found when other channels do that I find myself going to their page hoping for a video post then clicking on something else that catches my eye. Also remember, unlike the people that make it big playing games, your fan base is here for a wider variety of topics so to limit yourself to one thing is to exclude a wide variety of people, and your page is built off of history. All of your videos have at least some basis of history in them so you're still within your "niche" on this platform. If you keep doing what you're doing you'll eventually hit that 100k subscriber mark, just make sure you keep asking people to like subscribe and share your videos for the whole algorithm thing. Happy New Year

From my perspective, there's no need to change anything. I'll admit to being more interested in the racing as well as the "small town America" segments but certainly watch everything else. For me, there's no need for separate playlists -- even those who may have no interest in one of your general topics can easily skip past it after seeing the title and the thumbnail. Your camera does an excellent job in your hands. Good phone cameras are quite versatile (in addition to being easy to carry around). I've wondered if any people who you approach at the race track or anywhere else realize that you are producing content for over 23,000 subscribers as well as who-knows-how-many other viewers. (Speaking of 23k subscribers, I think that number could become much larger if there was a "hook" that would make more people aware of the HMM.) Thanks for the Christmas greetings. My wife and I wish all the best to you also.

Thanks again Wideslammer; I really appreciate your continual feedback...and your honesty. Man you're right about that hook...I could sure use one to help spark this thing. I'm really not sure about what people know about my channel at the track. I have had some people come up to me and tell me they like my content, but I get the feeling that most tracks aren't much aware of my content. And...I pay for all my own pit passes. I tried to apply for media credentials at a couple tracks but got turned down at each. So I said the hell with it...and buy my way in. Maybe it's better that way anyway...Merry Christmas to you and yours!

You mentioned that KZbin measures views and time spent watching the videos. I don't know if the number of "thumbs up" or "comments" helps your channel, but it's something that people could easily do when they watch a video. I click the "thumbs up" as soon as I load the video since I know it always will be something worth watching. Sometimes I have an observation after watching the video to share with you via the comments. Of course, I enjoy reading the comments of others. Viewers who have friends who also like the kind of content you produce could "share" with those folks and maybe find a new regular viewer and subscriber.
@HistoryMysteryMan

Definitely...I should have included that in the last one...hitting the thumbs-up definitely helps the algorithm...any interaction with my channel helps my cause. ah I wish you could have made it down to auburn, the old auburn hotel that dates back to at least 1905 is about to be torn down, it was central to the auburn cord dussenburg festival from its inception and were many stayed, that came to town for the festival since its first days, and had several buisnesses inside it, including the 4 crowns bar since 1960's, it will be rebuilt but it will take over a year, and is one of the older buildings in the city across from the courthouse. as for me I film what is around, and my stuff isn't editied you at least do that and have an organized format when you ask questions, but I show the area and historical events or events not many will be willing to show, as for me I like documentries but sometimes it can take time to finish and sometimes I dont always have the time, or I do it over multiple videos as my cam usually shuts off after 10 minutes merry christmas Don. and sarry I was not able to find you at the 4 crowns this year, but it was a rare feat sevey pulled off swept all the nonwing stuff. as for the old people that are so called experts, I dont like when someone tells me when I ask about somthing oh thats not for you do dont want nor need that especially when it comes to hunting equiptment, or my choice of when I buy clothing. like the one guy oh you dont need a 600 grain slug for hunting deer I am not going to sell you that ammo, or oh you dont have a union or high paying skilled trades job you dont need top level usa made clothing stop wasting your dough, just buy something at the local big box store, or when trying to learn something new oh your not smart enough you cant handle that item jeremy, so your not allowed to try, its like why dont you give me one shot to show you I can, how can I get better if you dont give me the chance to practice. its like steam engine builder livio dante porta used to say you dont know what it is that you dont know till you know of it, like a 1st grader does not know logerithems but they dont know they are ignorant of them till they learn of them in 8th grade, but they might actually be good at them if they try them or learn enought to practice, but if people gatekeep on the knowlege how is one supposed to advance.

To keep you content seperate for people use the playlist feature keep it updated and direct them to it for auto racing list, maritime history and captain D must have his own playlist and if some vidoes need to crossover into other playlists the so be it I see that all the time from the famous youtubers lol. Dont cut your length down I hate short videeos and I wont even watch a short. Above all be true to thine self. In this case I think that means do stories that make you happy that may fall out of your niche (someone needs to tell these people that believe that there is a reason we are speaking latin). And above all its your channel if someone doesnt like something you do last time I checked nobody was forcing them to watch. And if they constantly complain about content ect...then they need to start there own channel and as frank sinatra would say do it there way. thanks for letting me put in my 2 cents I hope it helps. wade

Wow...this is good. Thanks for all your input. I'm taking your advice on the Playlists and have already started some. Like most things, it takes me a while to figure things out. If you get a chance, check out what I've done so far and let me know if I'm on the right track. Thanks for watching, Wade...stop by anytime. HMM

@@HistoryMysteryMan I'd personally love to visit Gettysburg sometime I've drove passed it when going to Philadelphia but never visited I love visiting historical places I also heard that soilders are still fighting even though they are deceased I've heard rangers talk about that very haunting ground there if you believe in that kind of thing I've heard many stories even hearing ghostly drums sounds and sometimes a phantom cannon going off crazy stuff there

You gotta go to Gettysburg! I went out onto the battlefield at night when I was there...alone...scared the crap out of myself. Eventually got chased out by off-duty rangers, who also scared the crap out of me. @@ajbaumgart4774

Or are you already the "Niche" There's a reason where KZbin has a "Play list" so content creators that have more than one "Niche" can contain them for their audience that want that content so crack on with whatever. I mean I didn't watch any of you racing cars content because its not my thing but your Shipping content I will watch all day long with a bowl of chicken wings and a shipping crate full of beer. Merry Christmas little buddy

I personally have only seen your Great Lakes content, which I really enjoyed, so I say post whatever you want however tell a story like you do with the lake content if you start posting other subjects, hope that helps lol and I'm 30 years old for the record also I just recently discovered the ship that was with the Fitzgerald that night she went down (whose name escapes me) is still operational. Why not do a modern video on that?

Oh you're so funny. You spent the first several minutes describing your niche then ask if you should do a niche. Your style of storytelling IS you. Yes. Hell, ive watched 60-Minutes for 50 years....they cover stories from Hitler to Bread baking, to the Rollings stones and poverty. All different stories. Keep it up! I dont need to watch Auto racing, but insure can wait till what im intetested in. Keep it up! And thanks.

Please don't waste your money on that pretentious tech rubbish. Simple cell phone is plenty adequate when presenting/interviewing. Regarding niche, my own personal interest is your great lakes stuff, that is what attracted me to your channel but your other videos are fascinating too. For example, I never heard of the Johnstown Flood until your video on it. Keep to the same style you have been doing until now please, the more history and maritime the better but that's just my own preference.

We're all very sick of everything becoming so Politicized but think a lot of what you focus on are those things Midwest Americans are increasingly fearing they're going to lose or maybe, they heavily desire to get back to. We feel good again when we watch your videos. Let's no one kid one another here because most of us are fully aware there is a big push among Progressives to completely erase our culture and history and most especially, White culture and history and that's just a disturbing factoid.
@HistoryMysteryMan

Whoa...this is powerful...what you wrote. I think that every time we open our mouths, we are essentially talking politics whether we know it or not. There's really no dodging it anymore, and why should we? Speaking of forks in the road for America. And yes, cancel culture is wrong, no matter where or who it comes from. Thanks for sharing your thoughts here...stop by anytime. Yes...small town America is a dream inside my mind as to how things could be if we all stepped up more responsibly and exercised discipline everywhere. Teach your kids discipline. HMM
