I dont know why but it made me go into a really deep existential questioning and melancholy, of this kid thinking it was spending the last moment of his life, and probably the last of his tribe, with his companion but it really was another thing that didnt even know his name. How many people have died like that? Alone with no one at their side? Just a dot in the scheme of things that not even a single person will remember your name for some time, you will practically be in oblivion the second you die. Not even his death made me sad, it was this questioning that my mind was doing to itself.

This is the single best pilot episode of any show I've ever seen. It's difficult for any series to live up to that. To your eternity is just above average for the rest of the season. The pilot is essential viewing for all anime fans.

There is something special about this first episode. The crippling lonliness, wanting to risk everything to see your loved ones one more time. The contrast between the weak human against the harsh nature, still... preservering, trying to over come despite knowing its hopeless.

There is a theory that the unknown boy can very well be "Fushi". Of course its not the boy's name. But in foreshadow, this is the future that Fushi dreads... The unknown boy lives in a world where everyone he loves died. Fushi is immortal and as the Man in Black said "All humans die". In the end he will come to understand the true pain of the first boy.

Saddest episode/death of the entire series. I think the fact that Fushi, who hasn't developed humanity yet, combined with the boy failing in his quest and dying alone as the only "sentient" one makes it really tragic. It made me think how lonely, yet how unalone he was when he died.

Man you can tell his optimism is the anchor to his sanity. He can't take a second thinking of the dark thoughts, or else he'll go crazy. First I thought he was making up thoughtless lies about the firewood running out, despite there being still a lot more outside and the fire already burning next to him, in order to eat the fish raw cuz he was going crazy. He also smiled creepily when he saw his yet empty room he is too familiar with. He's also talking to a dog who can't converse back. I think the infection he had and the fever bringing him pain brought him to his senses, and we was able to die without losing himself. Idk this is my headcanon regardless this is one of the tragic deaths in anime :c
