I really like the fact that nintendo themselves confirmed that it's a part of the toad's head. As a kid I hated the idea of toad's mushroom being a cap. I think heavy has two things that make wanting to main him hard which is obviously variety in ways to play and I feel like a good heavy looks on the outside similar to a bad heavy just that it’s optimized.I feel like all the other classes when you get really good at them look really different from when you start them. For example soldier goes from this slow 200 health damage dealer to a hypersonic generalist who can put himself anywhere on the map using rocket jumping. TLDR Heavy’s progression from awful to amazing is harder to notice than other classes(expect maybe pyro but anthid pulls off some bs on that class)

But, when grabbing the elephant, power up everyone's entire body changes. The only thing that doesn't change is their clothes, toads hat is still on top of the elephant. If it were part of it's head it should've transformed as well. Peach could float without a hat, and nabbit probably could've used his bandana, but they just wanted it to be consistent.

Also, Super Mario Bros 3 basically introduced us to the variety of Koopa family members and other minion family members little by little with each new chapter/installment. I believe we’ve finally seen all of them based from at least the basic/core Super Mario Bros game. So many took so long to engage new 1s we’ve never seen, like Spiny I’m not too sure if they iterated any additions except the green eggs that don’t let Spiny pop out, Lakitu is about the Last taking the longest as a boss in Galaxy 2 (King Lakitu or whatever he was called) with his cloud having a lightning effect which was never a thing in the past.
