My husband grew up on a tobacco farm. Here, we don't ferment tobacco. We just dry the leaves in a barn. They are not normally a perennial. Save the seeds to plant next year. Make sure to give them plenty of fertilizer.

My family raised tobacco for extra income. Once the tobacco leaves were cut they were put on wooden sticks and hung in a barn until it cured or dried out.

Here's an idea, Scott. Keep a rag under the seat to dry it off when you want to ride without getting a wet "seater".Actually I believe a better description than "grumpy" would be "curmudgeon". I know. I'm married to one who can also be. On another note, I grow nicotiana. I planted mine in spring a year and a half ago. It took 6 months to flower and continues to do so when the weather cools (Today's temps are near 100F) so I have flowers most of fall through spring. It occasionally needs to be cut back to force new flowers. Now, I believe flowering nicotiana is a relative to the tobacco plant that is grown for smoking. Tobacco is grown by the Amish in Pennsylvania and in states like Tennessee. Tobacco barns are lovely things with their slated sides to allow the leaves to dry.

My grandfather was born around 1900 I grew up in the Great American depression. He had many uses for tobacco. used to hang tobacco upside down in the attic of his house too dry. My grandmother told me that they used it as an insect repellent. My daddy told me that when the leaves were dry , Grandpa would smear them with Sovereign molasses and roll them up to make a plug of tobacco for people who like to chew it. It would also help keep away mosquitoes, spiders, bed bugs, and other types of insects. We always used it as a poultice when we got stung or bit by an insect. It will suck venom out of an insect wound. I Spit on many a chaw of tobacco and put it on a bee sting. It burns a little but this thing will go away. It's amazing what the old remedies were.

I'm looking forward to more of you banter as it's funny. I like the show and the scenery is to die for you lucky buggers. I think Scott needs to fling some small stones into the ever growing potholes where he fixed the bridges along the entry path . Keep up the repairs planting and a tip when you strim the yard you should gather it all up and make compost for the veg garden etc. Enjoy your journey.

I grew up in tobacco, they are an annual. They get very large, start picking the leaves from the bottom up once they reach a large size. Pick the leaves every day. We used to take the flower stalk off because it was a commercial crop, topping would encourage leaf growth. Leaves were strung on a hefty stick tightly packed together and dried in a coal fired kiln until they were yellowed, but still supple. A bit like a very fine thin leather in texture. You can do it at home, they just need somwhere warm and dark with decent air circulation. Good luck 😊

Thank you for this. I have been told that, growing small amounts of tobacco at home, it's hard to get the sugars and protein to break down without fermenting it (which gives a smoother, less harsh smoke). In commercial enterprises, the sheer volume of tobacco stacked/tied together, causes this fermentation naturally. So, I ought to force a ferment with kefir water first, then dry. I wasn't aware they needed drying in the dark....I'll need to get my thinking cap on. It may have to be the attic! Kx

I can't imagine 90% humidity without it raining cats and dogs! We average more like 12-14% humidity most days...25% at a stretch. Since you seem to be standing inside a tool shed, why not leave the tools there? We've got a couple of friends, who are ranchers, who have two or three of those quad bikes that they use for herding, feeding and watering cattle. Tobacco plants spread like the plague. You may plant a dozen plants, but next year you could have a hundred of them. I pull them all in the Spring or I can't walk from one end of my yard to the other.

How breathtaking it will be! Thank you for all the beauty you supply. It benefits the world! Just a question: In your part of the world do they line chimneys with stainless steel? We do that here if we want to help prevent creosote buildup. Of course, it's not perfect and the chimney still has to be cleaned.
