Leica recently released a new Firmware (4.0) for the Q2 which actually fixed or improved many of the "issues" with the Q2 that I mentioned in this video (JPEGs, Dynamic Range, Metering, Video Codecs and more). I've had the X100V for a few months and started to feel like something was missing, so I purchased a Canon R5 and a couple of lenses. I immediately hated it and returned it the next day. I can never go back to interchangeable lens cameras. They're just too bulky, heavy, and make photography a chore. So, my next option for something different was, of course, the Leica Q2. After watching your video, I fell back in love with my X100V. There's something about this camera that I cannot let go of. At least not yet.. It is an amazing camera with so much character.

Fantastic comparison! Appreciate the effort. Glad someone mentioned the horrible Auto WB of the Q2! It is driving me crazy so I always have set it to Daylight temperature and treat it like 35mm film :) Can't go wrong with the little fun X100v. Those straigth out of camera jpegs were lovely.

Great overview. Nice shots too. One thing I would add is that the Fuji's built-in flash and the automatic flash exposures are simply incredible. So it can slightly compensate for low light situations. Q2 can't do that. I used to shoot the Fuji X100 and then switched to the Q and now shoot the Q2. To be completely honest, I wish I had both cameras because the Q2 has stunning image quality and weather sealing, but the Fuji has stunning Jpegs, better white balance, better auto-exposure and a killer flash. And it's a lot smaller and less costly.
@franzvonroenne48012 жыл бұрын
the process of buying the q2 was exactly the one you describe for yourself, except that I didn't start from such a 'high level' system that is the Fuji. I used for a long time the instamatic approach that it is not the camera - an iPhone 12 lately in my case - but exclusively the things that you do with this tool, warts and all. So in a way I chose the Q2 exactly for the purpose of continuing that approach, but with a camera where I know its never the camera when a picture doesn't turn out fine. So for me, the learning curve (I actually started with a real Leica and a Leitz darkroom once as a boy, then used SLR analogue and digital, but all with ok but less than professional level cameras) is a steep one because I have to learn anew the basic reflexes required to adapt your camera to the situation that you meet or want to create. So your presentation was extremely helpful and encouraging, more so than any other I have seen. Thank you.

I paired my X100V with a Leica M Rangefinder and really like that combo. Really love Acros and use the jpegs most of the time out of the V, but the Leica M took over as my street camera mostly due to range focusing with a 21 or 28mm lens thats faster than any auto focus system... Great video Thanks

Great comparison. I own a x100v and a M9, and my use cases are pretty much similar to yours, i.e. focus on shooting and not on postprocessing. Coming from Leica to Fuji my first impression with Fuji was a little bit frustrating because the complexity with customization is (for a Leica shooter) overwhelming and sometimes the camera controls you. Although Leica DNGs out of the M9 are >>50% perfect for me sooc, what I appreciate most with the x100v is the jpeg and film simulation offering which makes really fun.

Congrats on the upgrade! Bought the Q2 partly because you mentioned the X100v does not stop you from craving the Q2 and am really happy with this. Had the WB issue only once (in the snow). Other than that, I am also rarely doing anything in post and use BW HC or the VIV (with extra saturation and a tiffen Pro Mist 1/8) and constantly LOVE the jpgs I get from the Q2. It'll take a while to figure your favourite look but imho it's absolutely worth it 👍

Just like you I also like to use a BPM (1/4 though) and I also use a polarizer every now and then. I just can't wait to get back out and use it some more. I'm right there with you on the manual focus thing. I rarely use it but I do like how the Leica's is actually mechanical. I got my X100V just for the jpeg simulations. I don’t have either cameras but something annoys me about Leica users. For records, I am talking about the M range finders. Leica users brag about the M range finder system and yet, I see ton of them attaching an electronic viewfinder, what the hell? Another thing, they always claim that the M system slows them and makes them think more about composition, well; I don’t buy this, turn any camera into manual mode and it’ll slow you down. You don’t have to buy a $$$$$$ for this.

Good comparison, but I’m surprised that you didn’t mention other advantages of the X100V over the Leica Q2. These include a faster shutter speed (4000 vs 2000), leaf shutter, enabling flash sync up to 1/4000 of a second, built in 4 stop ND filter, and hybrid OVF/EVF viewfinder. I can afford any camera I want, so price is not an issue for me. I just feel that the X100V offers more capabilities. I think you may have gotten caught up in the Leica mystique. I’ll bet you hold on to your X100V. 😊

great comparaison , thanks . I got my Q2 , 3 weeks ago after 2 years of Q-P and 2 years of Fuji x100f . I was shocked the first few days at the grain on Q2 compared to the Q ( I prefer the Q in that regard ..) the rest is also a work in progress but I still believe that Leica and fuji glass doesn't react exactly the same to light . I had more keepers with fuji but all very polite and pretty and after a while I felt the fuji colours were a bit "fake" for better words . On the other hand , I need to throw away more shots made by the Q/ Q2 but when things get right ( composition, light etc ) then it becomes really that much more special . a quality to the files , an almost ability to capture the subject but also the "Air " around it .It is not a version of the scene , it feels like the scene . I don't really mind the WB to be honest . I like the cooler tones of the Q2 and using Cobalt profiles slightly tweaked to my taste I am now super happy with the colours . ( I didn't like the muddy brown tones with adobe profiles for sure ) . Q2 jpgs are also better than the horrible Q jpgs and feel very appealing to me now . If you like to recover shadows and Highlights etc then not good but if you like an honest but filmic representation then they are really good . Again , Fuji jpegs are amazing indeed but often too polished ?? if only Leica could give us an update with a couple more jpgs options , it would be the most amazing camera . best

I shoot the Q2, mostly just documentary style and I do agree with the white balance observation. Most of my shots are done indoors so the improved low-light capability and IBIS are very handy. I shoot BW HC with the contrast and sharpness both turned up a notch, usually around 3200 or 6400 just for that nice grit. No more white balance issue and the noise I find charming. Thank you for the video, I have been thinking about going the opposite way of you and picking up a Fuji, but it might not be the V, probably something like the XT4 just to complement the obviously lackluster video performance of the Q2 (and that lack of flippy screen. Flippy screen is life.)

Now, Im in a cross roads right now, mostly because I have several trips to several destinations and am trying to determine if my Q2 would be enough for it. I don’t want to miss a shot because of the lack of a “zoom lens”. I saw your NY and Iceland videos. They were wonderful but Im still trouble by the fact that it is a fixed lens. I also owned a Leica Sl2 and sl2s, but the lens of the kit that I might need in order to be on the safe size is the main reason why Im troubled. I mean 47mp is a lot for cropping… but these are once in a life kind of trip, so I don’t want to regret not taking the right equipment for it. I’ll like to hear your ideas about it. BTW, I also have a Fujifilm xe4 with the 18-135 which was my travel photography lens for years. But Leica colors are again something not to take lightly. Your response would be greatly appreciated. Again thanks for sharing. Jro

You should compare the Panasonic GX9 with Fuji X100V. It is solid and well built, has inbuilt stabilisation and takes panasonic leica lenses (including the rest of the MFT line up)and in my opinion the only downside is the EVF which is cleverly designed but hard to use in bright light unless you attach the designed eyeshade. I have owned three of the X100 series, including the V and they frustratingly feel and sound like toys when compared to GX9. Again, in my opinion the GX9 has been somewhat overlooked as a serious travel and street camera.

Good review and thx for this. As you said these two cameras are in fact complementary. The focal and optic quality of the Leica are amazing , the jpeg and Fuji color profiles are astonishing. It s interesting to read in the comments that a lot of people reading this review got the 2 cameras and love them all. For me and my photography I prefer the Q2 : The Leica body is a jewel , I prefer its look (sorry I don’t agree your fiancée :)), thé manual focus is better , its sensor is better - its definition prevents you from having to add any lens adapter - , the lens is a dream and the fact the optic is stabilized is a plus. At this stage I don t understand why Fuji with its experience with the XT series didn’t integrate stabilisation in it. If it would be at 2,5k$ instead of 5k, the discussion between the 2 would be shorter. But Leica stays Leica…. So I will wait a little to have more money :).

Leicas are like poetry. They are designed with such detail and precision that you can feel the love that went into them. Using one is an experience and it goes beyond just a tool to capture photos. The fact that a Fuji camera is being compared to one says a lot about Fuji. I feel there is something romantic about the dials on top. You really get back to the basics of taking a photo. It doesn’t force you to slow down but makes you want to. In doing so you find you take photos with more purpose. You become eager to go home and load your images and see if they came out just as you saw them in your mind while framing.

You are the most valuable type of customer that Leica could have. A body and a lens can cost anywhere between 7500 / 15,000 It's a jewellery company, its myth and reputation made from the 30s to the 80s. The stunningly wonderful little Fuji, light, nimble, pocket size, go everywhere, discreet with that tilt screen always gets the main job done, designed by photographers for photographers, and that's coming from a Leica M7 shooter.

The decision is easy: If you are a photo enthusiast and you want perfect pictures and money doesn’t play any role: get the Q2. If you are a photo enthusiast and you want perfect pictures and money plays a role: get the X100V

Your fiancée is right. The retro style of the Fuji is so much better looking than the minimalist style of Laica. I just wish Fuji had real manual focus, then it would be perfect.

I am sorry Leica but as a ex Leica fan, I have to admit something. If you spend your money for the Leica rather then spending for trips or Photo projects, your own books etc. that makes you a camera collector, not a photographer. Leica products, they are really overpriced in my opinion. This is why nowadays Leica cameras call as a "Dentist's Camera". So get the Camera that is going to support you regarding spending money for your projects.

At around 3 times the cost of the Fuji it's a no, besides the Fuji is less noticeable and even with nisi hood and filter on it still fits in my Pocket, and your partner is correct it's a beautiful camera with great lines.

I've not used either camera. And, a lot of comments from people who have had both usually say something like "It's a learning curve with the Q2..." or "I'm getting used to the Q2,,," but have had great success with the Fuji. I'm scratching my head. If I'm going to spend that much money on a camera I'll go with the Fuji medium format models.

Kind of crazy to compare the two on video. Leica have never been good for video and would anyone use either of these for video? I wouldn’t. I have owned an X100T and a Q (first). The quality of the Q files seemed noticeably superior to me, probably due to the incredible lens on the camera. I tried to love 28mm but in the end it was just too wide for everyday use (for me). I owned my X100T for about three years and probably used it more and got more great images from it. I’m happier with 35mm equivalent. The Q images were stunning in quality, sharpness and colour. The X100T film emulations are lovely. I would guess the Q2 is a much better camera than the X100V for IQ….if you can live with the 28mm or the in camera cropping. I ended up buying a CL instead.

Excellent and honest video, many thanks. I have been trying to decide between the two and see the gap between the 2 isn't as large as I thought regarding image quality which is the deciding factor for me. However I would much prefer the fuji being wider so I need to look at the wide angle converter to see if that impacts on the image quality? Thanks again

I have had many cameras. l ended up selling my Fuji x100 for my l-phone because my shots were far more trustworthy. l also used the Nikon fine pix 950 which was pretty good. Also the Fuji was soooo complicated after using a 35mm roll film camera. The x100 lens is the same as the x100v? Why pay the extra for the Leica?

Great video! My history with digital cameras was this: Leica X1 > Fuji X100 > Fuji X100S. After a decade my X100S broke. I kind of want my next camera to be an interchangeable lens camera. I want an 85mm lens for portraiture. I’m thinking of getting the new Sony A7lV but I miss my Fuji. A part of me thinks I need to put on my big boy pants and move up to full frame. Any thoughts? Thanks.

How would you compare the viewfinders? I'm considering a Q2 Monochrom, and currently own a Fujifilm X100 (yes, the first one). I love certain things about my Fuji, and may just pick up a X100V, but the full-frame Leica has my attention, especially because of it's low-light performance and overall build quality. One thing that I especially love about the Fuji cameras is the hybrid optical/electronic viewfinders, and probably my biggest reservation with the Leica (besides price, of course, lol) is the fully electronic viewfinder. I grew up shooting film in Nikon and Contax SLRs and really kind of hate the idea of electronic viewfinders, but its been many years since I've used one - maybe they've gottent better? In the past I've found that they disconnected me from my subject too much. How do you feel - do you miss the optical viewfinder with the Leica at all?
@normm77642 жыл бұрын
I own the original X100 (lovely camera), the x100v and the q2 mono. As an older guy who processed B & W film for years, I find many current cameras over complex and detract from the simple joy of shooting. I use only jpeg, can’t be bothered with post processing. My reason for buying the q2 mono was to try to recapture some of this lost joy. I find the viewfinder in the q2 mono excellent. It shows high quality B&W (not colour) and shows proper rendering of the image if exposure comp. is turned up / down. It allows you to preview the image. The q2 is beautifully made, has incredible resolution and it is also simple to use - it has better “feel” than the x100v, but I haven’t done a side by side comparison. I’m fighting the urge to buy a q2 colour, as I already have the x100v.

Great video ! Are you able to share your JPG personalised settings on the Fuji. Your video has really made me question why I have been shooting raw for many years when as you say, I don't use my Fuji system for professional work. I shoot with the Xpro2 but would think the settings are universal for all Fuji cameras. Are you able to share your X100 personalised colours ? Your images really jumped out at me. Beautiful.

versus- versus-versus -versus = versus make a jpg with each camera don't use additional edits print it with your options exhibit the picture and win a prize or recognition. Should neither of the two, price or recognition arise, it is definitely not because of the camera. If price isn't a problem for you, feel free to keep both. However, that will certainly not change anything in the picture, because if I then have to buy additional expensive processing aids, the additional value of 3.5 thousand pounds or euros more expensive camera no longer pays off, regardless of the brand. You don't see it in the picture afterwards anyway. I don't want to badmouth anyone's thoughts, just express a different point of view, because who cares what kind of cement mixer the mason of your house used ...;) a happy new (photo) year F.
