Yes they were close friends. Wayman would borrow Toby's tour buses when Toby wasn't on tour and always have them back when Toby needed them again. And the last time Wayman borrowed Toby's buses when it was getting close for Toby needing them again Toby called and didn't get an answer and when Wayman didn't call back Toby got worried cause he always returned Toby calls asap. Then when Toby got the call from Wayman's family telling him about him passing he was heartbroken. He wrote this song to sing at the funeral but couldn't do it cause it hurt him too much so he ended up singing Angel flying too close to the ground by Willie Nelson instead.

Wayman graduated from Tulsa Booker T. Washington and stayed home to play at the University of Oklahoma. He was the first college player to be named an AP First Team All-American in his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons, then he declared for the NBA. He also was an Olympic gold-medalist playing on the 1984 team and played 12 seasons in the NBA. A powerful left-hander he was also a great lover of jazz and played the bass. Thus, Toby's line about his "upside-down, backwards bass guitar" since he had to do that to play it from the left side. TK has been a great supporter of all things OU, so he and Wayman shared that as well as the love of music. Toby told the story of his wife driving them to the funeral service (about a 90-minute drive to Tulsa) while he tried to rehearse but he never was able to get all the way through it without breaking down, so he waited until the later Memorial Service to perform it for the family, and Dave Koz and the Wayman band were also able to perform. Cancer took Wayman, and now Toby has his own fight with it. Hang tough, TK! Thanks for reacting to this.

Yes they were very close good friends. The other musicians playing on this recording were also close friends who played music at the funeral. Feeling really down Toby sit and wrote this on a Sunday morning. Called the others ask if they would play for the song. You know the rest. Cancer Sucks

THANK Y’ALL SO MUCH for reacting to this!!! It is farrrr too overlooked!! Yes, Toby can be funny, but he also has a beautiful side. (Another example: Love Me If You Can.) This song has always shredded me, but now that Toby is in the fight for his own life, the lyric ‘you taught me how to live, and now you taught me how to die’ positively guts me😔 All through the cancer, even w the loss of his leg, that beautiful smile of Wayman’s always remained❤️ What a smile it was!!! Sadly, Toby Keith is also currently fighting stomach cancer, and has canceled all of his shows for the rest of the year. Cancer took Tisdale from us and never mind his basketball and jazz prowess, he was one of the best humans that God ever made. He was just a special person that cancer took too soon. I hope Toby Keith has a much better outcome.

Wayman Tisdale was and still is my all time favorite college basketball player. He is probably the athlete who sealed my love for the game of basketball on the college level. Warman was a NASTY bass player. My favorite cut from "Rebound" is "After The Game". I listened to that last week in my classroom. Gives me great memories of 1995/1996. When this song was released and I heard it, I cried. It is on multiple playlists of mine. Enjoyed your reaction.

R.I.P. Toby this song hits me hard i was diagnosed with throat cancer due to a lifetime of severe acid reflux. I chose not to seek treatment the Good lord has spoken death is a beautiful thing it is the next step of the journey we must all someday take alone. Awesome reaction.

Yes this is a sad story: we were suppose to go on a cruise with Dave Koz when he Wayman was supposed to be on. He was recouping from surgery, chemo and worked his way amazingly fast be healthy. I did not even know he had passed when someone asked me did you know?? I was like what!!?? When he Toby sings “missing that smile”. Wayman had the biggest smile from ear to ear always. He just had this infectious smile and the called him the aTeddy bear! He died of knee cancer, the story on th cruise became a tribute to him his family was there. One in the middle of the night he went down the stairs to get water for his wife and just fell. His wife heard the noise and he called to her: Regina I just fell, the rest is unfortunately history where they discovered cancer in the knee. At one point they thought he was in remission and god had other plans for him. RIP Wayman, was happy at least got to see him once in concert with DK.
