He got the idea of the song from Clint Eastwood who was about to start directing a new movie at age 88. He asked Clint how he did it. Clint told him, “I just get up every morning…and I don’t let the old man in”. Toby loved the line & turned it into a song.

@terri2494 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. This was my first time hearing the song and I thought he was talking about death. Now, knowing the line originated with Clint Eastwood, I can see where it could mean that he refuses to think of himself as an old man, with all the frailty and limitations associated with advanced age. It certainly works for Clint. Let’s pray that it helps Toby in his fight.

He wrote this song before he was diagnosed with cancer. By some of his interviews about this song, it seems he's talking about not letting your life change just because of your age. He wrote this song because he was so amazed that at the age of 88 Clint Eastwood was still directing and acting in movies despite his age. He asked him How do you do it?? Clint said I get up & go outside every day, and I dont let the old man in. Clint Eastwood is now 93. God Bless Clint and Toby rest in heaven.

This is what makes Toby Keith unique. The words came straight from the heart. When you are young thoughts like this may cross your mind. But you don't dwell on it and one day when you are older you think to yourself. It's inevitable we all have to face it. It's a sad reality but it's the truth no one wants to die but now the time is here and you graciously and courageously face the moment of truth. It's your time but you really don't want to go..You say to yourself there's more time. But the Lord has the final say and it's time for you to go.. It's a sad reality and then we face it. Rest in peace Toby Keith with your words all of us face reality. Thank you for the years of beautiful music an great memories an beautiful songs.A person's life is not measured by wealth and worldly things.But what keeps our memory alive is how much we are loved by others.Amen🎉💜 you fought courageously and valiantly Amen

R.I.P Toby. Clint Eastwood inspired the words as much as Toby's battle with cancer, by providing the words. Toby asked Clint, how do you keep going making all the films. Clint replied I just keep getting up, and don't let the old man in. So there you go, the song was presented to Clint, he liked it so much it was included in Eastwoods film The Mule. Live every day as though it's your last, be good to yourself and others. Look up all Toby Keith's past songs, all fabulous to know and listen to, over and over again.

That was his wife Sebs. I saw this live and I got a bit teary eyes when it was done live and the lead-up to him coming on. Blake Shelton building him up and his career. You have to see that program and that part of the show. Toby said the "old man" was a metaphor for death. Him facing mortality and fights to live and survive.
@phyl1042 Жыл бұрын
That's how I took it, that the "old man" was Death.

Yes, the pretty brunette lady is his wife. I watched this when it aired as well and cried too. My dad has had three strokes this year which caused dementia. His looks have changed so much too, and this performance really tugged at my heartstrings because watching a big, strong man affected by illness bravely carry on is amazingly heroic in the face of illness and everything is extra emotional these days. That was a really special performance and Blake was really great as well in the kind and funny way he honored Toby.

@@tcurry2512 I’m so sorry about your dad. My mom was in the early stages of dementia when she fell and got a brain bleed two years ago. She died six days later. I never realized someone could get it from a stroke, or a series of strokes. Mom’s grandfather had it and her dad and three of his four siblings had it so we always knew it was a possibility with mom. She’s the oldest by ten years of her cousins and sister so we were waiting to see if it would hit her generation. We were hoping it was environmental rather than genetic. All that to say I can’t imagine having to deal with it without warning. I hope you’re able to have some special times with your dad in spite of the circumstances. It’s so hard to lose someone incrementally. I’m praying right now for you, your dad, and the rest of your family. Blessings and peace to you all.

@@phyl1042 But he got the idea and the title from Clint Eastwood. They were playing golf together and Clint was going to be 90 in a couple of days, and Toby asked him how he did it (keep going and still making movies and such). Clint said that when he got up in the mornings he just didn't let the old man in. I took it to mean that he still felt younger and wouldn't let his age slow him down.

Man, this reminds me of my late husband. He was a bulldogger. Big and strapping. But he was skinny when he passed from kidney cancer in 2012. And I saw Toby Keith in Bosnia in 2002 and in Iraq in 2004.

This really hit me hard. I'm 64 was diagnosed with cancer Aug. 30th 2020. I'm a 3 1/2 year survivor, but I've been told there is a 75% chance it will come back. Toby was a hell of a songwriter and singer. He didn't write this as his swan song, but that's what it turned out to be. Rest in Peace Toby!!!
