How does this channel only have 15k subscribers? Criminal. As a beginner with crippling anxiety for just setting pen to paper your videos have quickened my confidence. Solid, practical advise and a diverse pool of instruction and inspiration. Loose, relaxed sketching ftw. Because of you I finally said screw it and started scribbling on a post it at work. Cheers and thanks!

That anxiety is the biggest barrier to becoming the artist you want to be. I don't know what it is with art that we think we should just be able to do it without the thousands of hours of work that is actually required, but so many of us battle with it. I think, when we're kids, we all draw at the same level so it's fun and we can show our drawings to each other and we're super supportive. But at some point, our friend keeps drawing but we do other things. When we come back to drawing, our friend's level has increased where ours hasn't and we're ashamed or our work. We lose sight of the fact that our friend has put in the hours and we haven't and then it's no longer fun for us. For me, I just decided that my sketchbook is a private space, no one needs to see it and that I will just draw and try to recapture that joy of drawing. I approach each sketch as an experiment now, and just draw for the fun of it, in the knowledge that each drawing is teaching me something and that the more I do, the better I will get. Drawing is for you. Have fun with it.

Thing is you do have talent. You were belittled because you didn't fit into the teachers idea of 'normal'. It is clear the teacher had inner demons they were dealing with and shared them with you. You have talent, use it, enjoy it and don't ever let someone steal your joy.

I’ve struggled for years to understand watercolor. It’s a mystery to me how to finish a piece that seems unfit for the eye. Ugly for short. You’ve helped me understand what I’m supposed to be accomplishing with color. I can draw but the second color hits the page I’ve ruined a nice piece. The simplicity of each step relaxed my overwhelming fear of making a mistake. I’m grateful I found your calm touch and unraveled a piece of this mysterious art. I love watercolor, but I go about painting like it was a chess game. Thank you. I’m going to look for more of your teachings.

Toby, what a terrific video! Thanks. FYI, IKEA sells a dish cloth for 69 US cents that works great for watercolor. I bought a pile of them and save on using paper towel/kitchen roll. I wash them up and reuse them.

They make those books 270 etc, because it’s a sketchbook and you may want to actually sketch something then pop some WC in. That means you’ll likely be using a pencil, pens, or watercolor pencils / pastels / colored pencils, etc. You may not want the paper to “eat” the tips of your sketching tools. So, the paper is somewhat smoother. Imho, 300 + is made with a view to brushes; painting … not so much doodling and the likes. Btw, this is the first sketch I did along with you after I found your channel. It is also the very first sketch in my first WC sketchbook. I was that pumped after watching & listening to your instructions. Just do it , have fun … and it came out great 😊 I have been a subscriber ever since. Thank you, Sir.

Thanks for the introduction to watercolour sketching. I haven‘t sketched or painted for over 40 years but it was something I loved as a student. Your approach inspires confidence to just have a go with minimal financial outlay. I was really pleased to see you working from a photo, my initial approach has been to take multiple photos of my subject, digital photography makes this really easy. I can then put the image on my ipad or laptop and sketch it from there. With experience I may be less self conscious about street sketching 😅. Thanks again and good luck to all those equally inspired. ❤

Very informative in a fun and easy instruction on Urban Sketching. For a beginner, such as myself, this was eye opening and encouraging to not be afraid to start by doing a loose drawing and not to be afraid to add watercolour to the sketch. Thank you 😊

Toby, a brilliant video, well described and most importantly you are encouraging new or beginner artists to be free in their approach. You also talk about fun, painting should be fun, it is such a joy to create even a small sketch a wonderful reminder of a holiday or just a place that took one's interest. Much respect from an old artist.

Thanks for this, you are definitely the right man for teaching me, looser is my style. I did go too far though, so not keen on what I created but hey ho, I get the idea. Now for more of your videos. Cheers Toby.

I'm so excited to find your channel!! I tried urban sketching a few years ago, with very little prior art experience, and just couldn't ever get the hang of it. I never knew where or how to begin, my proportions were always off. So I just gave up. You're inspiring me to give it another try!😍💖

This is the first of your video's I've found and I've hit subscribe already! Love this, thank you for the simple and 'loose' tips that make urban sketching so simple and accessible. Personally, I have a perfectionist streak that is useful in my job but it can be a block in my creativity. I'm letting my sketchbook and portable kit help me to just let go and relax in the journey of the creation on the page.

I enjoyed this video! As a child I was given a box of watercolours but was not taught how to use them. You do have to be taught how to use watercolours! Last year after many expensive lessons and lots of disasters I got the hang of it really by trial and error by myself. Now I can paint virtually anything from abstract to realism. I look at my watercolours and I cannot believe that I painted that - but I did, One of the most important thing I learned is to be patient. Watercolour takes time to dry. I found even if it looked awful some sort of magic happened overnight. This is why outside sketching is so unsatisfactory. Watercolours cannot be painted on the hoof. It is does in stages and each must dry. The applied pigment looks very different when it is dry. Next tip, one is told you cannot remove water colour, well that is true but not quite. If you use very staining pigments it is difficult to get back to pure white but with a brush, clean water and tissue one can do a very good job. The moment I found I could remove my mistakes even quite large mistakes my life changed. Any obvious instant mistake and I correct immediately and usually It disappears. I am very careful to be very light with my first wash. Lastly clean water. Every time I change colour I use clean water! A little watercolour pigment goes a long way, a touch of blue in the yellow and you get green or mud. If you want clear. clean colours keep your palette and water clean especially yellows. Use paints with just one pigment and try not to over mix otherwise you will get mud. It can look great but I like my watercolours to "Pop" off the page. Lastly sometimes when I began I used to turn to my pen and correct. I did this for years until I discovered I could correct. At first I made a draft copy on cheap paper, made all the major mistakes and the repeated on expensive 300g paper but I found I paint better on the cheap paper as this sketch book. The paper is very white, which is good and has no texture so one's fine lines are not wobbly. But this is me! I am still learning, Singer Sergeant who I adore gave up oils for the medium and he used white paste, another no no> oodles of white paint. I try to keep my whites clean but really masking fluid is the best answer. Sadly I am just at the start of my watercolour adventure. At 81 I have yet to discover my own style but I can copy any style as the old masters used to do when apprentices so I have fun. Oh to be young again! Thank you again for this video. I wish I had discovered this many years ago.

I like the idea of adding the spots on the sides to suggest there's something more off to it, but I think I would have added some pencil sketching of some of the things that you see on both sides. Not necessarily full-on, but rather hints, suggestions, or slight glimpses of some details. It's still a great piece, no matter what.

I found your channel today and loved it. Please do more beginner water color. I can’t draw. You know the difference between a boy or a girl by her triangle skirt. But I follow along with you and it looked like a village business in an earthquake. However for the first time in 60 years I think I can do it or at least improve on my drawing/water color. Thank you ever so much
