I really appreciate your no-nonsense, relaxed approach to sewing and serging. I wish this video had been around when I got my serger. I let it set in the box for a while because I was so nervous. Always been afraid to tackle a serger but came across on recently to check out for the thrift store for a dog rescue. Usually just do the many sewing machines that are donated. I've been watching every video I can find on threading it and learn something new every time. Yeah it s crazy hard to find machines at the moment. I just upgraded to the entry level Brother serger and I LOVE it! I'll be doing a video on that soon for sure. Keep in mind, you don't really "need" a serger unless you plan on selling products or competing in cosplay or fashion shows. You can certainly start sewing without a serger until you want to add more polish to your projects

Two details to add: Cover the cones with spool socks to keep the thread from tangling. Also, cutting the chain right at the fabric will lead to unraveling unless you sew over it. When serging a hem, I'll use the end of the chain to go over the start, and finish by creating about 6" of chain. Then cut about 2" from the fabric, gently pull the loops straight, and tie a knot in the chain as close to the fabric as possible before cutting the rest off.

Good call on both points. Generally the seams I overlock get sewn into seams between panels in garment construction, so there is no threat of frayed overlock threads, and everything turns out looking very polished on the inside. In any other situation where it would be visible, I'd tie off the ends like you and put a drop of Fray Check on it. I appreciate your comments by the way, you certainly know your sewing techniques!

Now I know, but I hope that I won't have to do that work though unless I can do similar work with my regular machine. Yep, sergers are great - you really only need one if you plan to start selling your work or taking commissions though. If you're just making clothing for yourself, you really don't need this machine since few people will see the inside seams :)

Beginner here, and a coworker just offered to give a serger to me. I have not even fired up the Singer 4411 that I got for Christmas yet. Should I even touch the serger right now or just wait? I have sewing experience, but from 20 years ago when I was a teen. I assume that I should just focus on the Sewing machine right now. My plan is to make tool rolls, tool bags, and organizers. Btw, I am going to get the serger either way, as it comes with other supplies and I am a hoarder of tools, machines, and equipment.

I use four different color thread cones on my serger. Only the left-most one shows anyway, and having different thread colors lets me more easily see which one I'm having trouble with.

After I realized I had one of the threads thread wrong and fixed it I still couldn't get it to sew without a lot of the thread sewing beyond the fabric. After watching you I realized that I didn't have the pressure foot down. LOL My regular sewing machine does it for me so I totally forgot that some machines are manual. LOL

lol, yeah that would create problems. Actually with both of my sergers, I just keep the presser foot down at all times, the feed dogs will bring the fabric in so I don't need to worry about that. You can always raise it if you need to, but it hasn't been an issue for me. Thanks for watching :D

love this video. Wondering if you could do a video on seam repairs. For example, when my shirts come with 4 tags attached inside the side seam, I of course want to take them out but no matter how I do it I end up with a hole in the seam where the tags were. So I'd like to use a serger to repair it properly, instead of do the whole seam again.. I found a couple videos on it but they weren't the best, especially on how to clean up the ends of the repair.

I could probably do that, it's super easy. Just use a seam ripper where the tags are, pull the tags out, do a straight stitch on the inside seam, and then serge it clean. That might be all you need to know :)

@@TockCustom I watched a number of videos and then got my new machine out of the box. I'd also read the manual and two books on using sergers. I found that it was already threaded (as I gather most are), but the threads were all tangled and I had to redo all the threading. Your video was the one thing that got me through. I then forgot to turn up the tensions before trying to make a thread chain, so it all churned up again and I had to thread it again! I then felt delighted I had managed to thread it twice myself, and quite glad really that I hadn't managed to put that off till another day by just pulling through. But it was your video that made the difference to me, so thanks loads :)

This is a great entry level overlock machine for sure - I had it for many years before upgrading. Tension wise, I usually keep all dials at 4. If I notice a particular thread being a bit loose, I'll increase it slightly, but typically you want to keep them all pretty close to each other. Hope you enjoy all your projects this spring!

Why did I think you had a Brother serger? Got my Brother Strong and Tough serger this week. To go with my Strong and Tough sewing machine and because I absolutely had to have a serger that came with the extension table. Not having one included with the ST150HDH was a disappointment. I just got the extension table for my sewing machine this week, so all is well now. Must go read the manual for my new serger. Took it out of the box, but have been reorganizing my sewing area. New shelves coming tomorrow so I expect to serge this week.

How much of a flap do you leave for these inner serged seams? For example, I have a curved inner seam of a tunic top that is 5/8". I serged it, but it is still 5/8" and is rather "flappy." It looks pretty good, but would you recommend just running it through a second time right up against the outer seam? I am just nervous because it is curved and feeding it through is tricky.

My 434 Singer serger has been used for over 40 years and I still dread any time I need to change colors. I have hoped that someone would have found an improved technique for threading. False hope! Great machine but one of the bigger stressers in my sewing room.

I guess there is a way to tie new thread cones to your thread while its threaded to change colors without re-threading from scratch - but I haven't gotten it to work yet. I should do some tests for a new video soon :)

I saw in another video you have a 'Husky' serger also. Maybe a few vid's on using that one? I find that even though it automatically sets the tension for your material, I always have to really tighten the needle thread in order to not see the stitches when opened,(???) Thanks

To be honest I really don't like that serger, it was too unreliable. I much prefer my new Brother Serger that I just got. This singer was a great unit too!

I’m brand new to sewing, and my spouse bought me a serger second hand (brand new, only used once). Should we have purchased something else for me to start with instead since I’ve never sewn before? Overlock machines are kind of "addons" to a typical sewing space. You can create some projects with a serger alone, but most projects will require that you sew with a traditional sewing machine first, and then serge the seams. Hopefully that makes sense. At least you wont have to buy a serger after you get your first sewing machine!!

Hi. I'm thankful for you. I have sewn little projects with an old cheap machine but now I would like to go to a "higher level" just a little more than beginner. But also I would like to do embroidery. I looked to different Brothers machines. Which one do you suggest for a intermediate that combines sewing, embroidery and quilting if possible but not really a decision changer. Do you use the SE400 for your daily use or which one?

I love my SE-400 for sewing a small embroidery jobs. Brother has a newer model now (Brother SE-600 and 625) for sewing/embroidery combo machines, and they no longer manufacture the SE-400. I still use it pretty much every day, and then I use my Heavy Duty ST150HDH for topstitching and thicker projects. Hope this helps!! Thanks for watching :)

Hmmmm... This type of machine normally sounds much different than a sewing machine. Almost like a harmonica as its running slowly. You might be in good shape already, I say just go for it and see how it looks when it's done. If you hear any grinding or crunching sounds... please stop though lol

Awesome video! I have a serger but am intimidated by it lol! New to your channel, quick question. Have you done any troubleshooting videos for sergers? I have a really hard time with changing tension between fabric weights when I finish a project and start another...

Thank you for watching! I haven't done anything with trouble shooting sergers yet, they either seem to be threaded correctly and work properly - or they aren't threaded properly and don't work. I'm planning to shoot a new video today using another serger actually. Wanted to redo this video with better lighting, colored thread, and more details. Hope it helps if you still struggle with your machine. Otherwise I hope you're making some great stuff already :)

Oh, you just run straight off the fabric, then put the new side of the fabric in through the machine and it will trim off and overlock the other edge. Perfect serged corners :)

Hi! I love your videos and your style. I started trying to teach myself to sew "via KZbin" a few months ago (it started as a wild hair + Pandemic boredom, and the sewing bug seems to have stuck) , and yours are probably my fave videos. I have a question I haven't seen demo'd anywhere yet (and maybe it's lack of the right verbiage to search), but , how does one get a seam going in a serger . . . particularly on a blind hem , when the fabric is already sewn in a loop (e.g. a t-shirt bottom hem) ?? I have the same machines you do (purely by my good luck), and would LOVE any tips yo have to help me in this area. so far , I just kind of "start" in the middle and hope the knife figures it out . . .but that's a bit hit and miss.
