@@Aaron-kj8dv they’re not mutually exclusive, marrying for love and money. As Marilyn so eloquently put you can’t truly be in love with someone if all you do when you’re together is worry about the money you don’t have. There’s a Canadian reality show called Til Debt Do Us Part about couples with poor money management and it illustrates this perfectly.

I also believe that there are no prizes for committing yourself to a broke and struggling man, especially as a woman. Broke men can and will financially abuse you and if they become successful later on many times they do not appreciate the woman who helped build them up. He actually resents her for seeing him at his lowest. He'll want a new woman who has only ever seen him at the top because in his mind she respects him more than the woman who watched him cry over bills.

i have seen this so many times, you are right on the money. women need to be loved by their partners, so having one that builds them up can strengthen the relationship. it will make him feel needed and her cherished, eg when a guy helps put you through grad school or supports you while you get a degree or build your business from scartch. but ultimately, men need to be needed, and hate to be reminded of their past struggles.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Exactly! The amount of men who succeeded in life and then left the women who supported them at their lowest is staggering. Women need to understand that dating financially struggling men is a huge gamble for them. So many women are so paranoid about being seen as gold diggers that they humble themselves in to poverty and for men who don’t even treat them that great. As someone who has dated broke men, I found them to be extremely insecure, belittling and resentful of you if you try to become successful.

Tf as a woman even I am offended, if a man is broke and his wife/partner earns then he should do the house chores and fix stuff while she earns and supports them but in this economy one person cannot support two people on their own but if u can why not, let's normalize men doing domestic work too , your comment just propagates gender roles where things are divided unequivocally all the time.

She is because she shows the perfect image that she has to project this perfect image she is beautiful and accomplished so is a trophy for someone to have her. Is always important to be careful when generalizing. Some of them may be pretty much that way. Maddy from Euphoria begins as the trophy wife in the making. Some people really don't want to work and it makes sense. Many jobs suck! It just so happens that some people may be in position to sign in that kind of contract. In those cases the relatioship is a transaction. "You can make use of my beauty, but it's expensive to keep it. Once you can't keep it anymore I run the risk of losing my assets. So I have to move on"

I think it's pretty clear that trophy wives and girlfriends, who by definition are not in their relationships for love, always come to a bad end. Their men ditch them and their history of selfishness and individualism leave them friendless and w/o support. Men who choose trophy partners are equally shallow and selfish. They deserve each other. Everyone reaps what they sow.

This reminds me of what I think is a subtrope of the Trophy Wife: The Aging Trophy Wife (in where she meets her biggest fear; having grown old). In 2004 Catwoman with Halle Barry as the titual protagonist, the antagonist is an aging Trophy Wife who had lost her status in the beauty industry due to her uncaring and calous husband who offers no support whatsover. The rise of Catwoman is a direct result of this beauty industry. The Aged Trophy Wife has entered the story bitter by her tragic background and left the story with a flat-arc and as a flat character as well. Still she forms an excellent example of this tragic trope, one who if not get its redemption arc in the story is excellent antagonist material, especially when being portrayed against the titual woman Catwoman, who herself is two sides of the same coin; insecure without the suit, and extremely secure when in it.

You know, when I was little, I innocently thought that marriage is supposed to be for love. ❤ Mostly because of my own parents' marriage and I've seen a lot of fairytales and Disney movies. I also admittedly had a negative opinion on people who marry for money(or any other shallow and selfish reason for that matter). 😅 But as I got older, I learned that not only marriage was a lot more complicated than it seems, but I also realized that love and money tend to go hand and hand in marriage. I also realized that people have been marrying partners with money for generations. And it really put it all into perspective. 😊 Don't you know that a man being rich is like a girl being pretty? You wouldn't marry a girl just because she's pretty, but my goodness, doesn't it help? -Marilyn Monroe This quote from Marilyn Monroe is a brilliant way to sum up most relationships. 💎 Doubly so if one or both parties are attractive/wealthy. With all that being said, I have no ill will towards trophy wives or trophy husbands for that matter. In fact, I can't help but commend them for being honest with what they want. 😊 I know people have different expectations and are always judgemental when it comes to relationships, but in the end, the only ones who know the whole story of the relationship/marriage is the couple themselves. And as long as they're both of consenting age, there's no grooming or abuse, their needs are met and there's mutual love and respect, all the power to them. 😊

come to think of it with sitcoms, where exactly did the reasoning come from that women have a richer background/upbringing than men?

How sad there's the term 'trophy' for women like they're objects. This is a sad society.

Even if I was rich and successful, why would I want a trophy wife? I have to work my ass off, just for someone that might be pretty, but still pretty much useless aside from complimenting things that belong to me in the first place? NO! Absolutely not! To me, the supersportscar is going to look just as good WITHOUT the beautiful loser sitting in the shotgun!

The term trophy wife is very demeaning. It implies that a woman's purpose is to make her husband look good. That her beauty is for the benefit of her husband and not for herself. We have to realize that no matter her status or youth or beauty, she is still a person and her marrying an older wealthy guy does not maker her any less of a person.

The issue with Amal is tricky. You could see it in two ways: 1) The ULTIMATE trophy wife. Yes, beautiful and glamorous, but HYPER accomplished and kickass in her profession. A trophy that could live on its own without you, husband... 2) Oh wait, maybe the trophy here is George.

Once again, I am guessing the negative stereotypes talked about are made by people who are jealous. The people who think trophy wives are "underserving" of their lifestyle or perks are people who are jealous because they don't have one or can't be one. The scrutinizers are desperate for a way to see that they are somehow better than people what are more successful than themselves.
