Important to note that these cats are all fixed and vetted! So many bodega cats just get an unfixed cat or kitten for free and that leads to other problems like them spraying and wandering to mate and making more homeless kitties. Cats are good pest control but do it responsibly, keep them safe and healthy as well!

It should probably become a requirement for bodegas to get their cats from the shelter or local reacue; they do have a Working Cat option at NYC ACC. This way when the bodega ever shuts down, the cat goes back to the rescue or shelter instead of being abandoned.

My town started a working cat program.. they also have a catch and release (and that was a lifesaver for me.. cuz a mommy cat decided to make my yard her home..) and she had several litters before I was able to get her fixed.. at the least, I was able to get a few of her babies' homes.. cuz I tamed some, and those that were too wild got fixed and stayed in my yard.. I definitely no longer have a mouse problem 🙃 nor any roaches

I disagree that the presence of cats repels mice. At 1086 Bute Street in Vancouver, they’ve allowed tenants to have cats for this purpose for decades. Still plenty of mice at Strathmore Lodge Apartments.
