The reason the Christians rarely or don't read the bible has to do with the things that serve their purpose. The content of the bible goes against their goals. I believe that the bible was written by a group of men that wanted to control people. The bible was also designed to tell men what they should and should not do. Women were very rarely mentioned except to make sure men understand what the writers decided was women's purpose. I don't believe there ever was a Jesus, and there is no way that any kind of scholars could convince me there was, and no time machine to prove it.

Ie, so long as the time machine is "stationary", gravity may be enough to keep the machine in the same place on the Earth. Let's hope continental drift also lets it keeps pace and there was no building or tree located on that spot when it reenters the normal time stream. Of course, the TARDIS is capable of navigating on its own and therefore is able to account for all those variables. Let's build a TARDIS.

I grew up on PBS - and watched a lot of Mr. Rogers! I didn't know for many years that it was essentially like going to children's church... but he was, and remains, a role model for me! When I applied for a volunteer program with Americorps, I wrote my essay about being inspired by Mr. Rogers, and how he said to always look for those who are helping. I believe that too many people have lost what it means to be a Christian in the modern era - anyone can become a religious leader, it seems, and manipulate their congregations. All anyone has to do is crack open a bible, to see what it's all about - being a kind and generous person who treats all around with with compassion. Edit: Happy Pride month, to anyone out there who celebrates...whether it's in the open, or not! Acceptance of all is what it's all about, after all.

To know it comes from someone who is religiously nonaffiliated is a call to return to true actions of love and acceptance. I'd challenge any religious to speak so positively about the history of atheists or agnostics over time with as much care. It will always be better to appreciate each other for who we are rather than who we want others to be. Many blessings.

Well, yeah. Most right leaning Christians are totally against most of these fundamental concepts of Jesus and the earliest Christians. Things such as caring whole heartedly for ANY suffering person, including those in prison and one’s enemies. Welcoming complete strangers to your home and feeding them and caring for their needs. Doing all you can for those unlike yourself, foreigners and those with disabilities and horrible diseases (even if it means losing one’s own life), having no personal possessions with all things shared equally among the community (except for wives/spouses) [which seems remarkably like true communism, if not Marxism]

I used to go to weekly YM/WCA events, which often included dinner made in the meeting place they were held at, even though I didn't identify as a Christian... I kinda kept it a secret, so I stopped going because I felt awkward, but I guess they would have been fine with me saying I was an atheist if I still wanted to come. In retrospect I wish I had stuck around, because the folks there were just genuinely nice and welcoming. I feel like that's an aspect of Christianity that's been lost since it became a state religion and got involved in politics - the idea of treating everybody equal as long as they're participating in good faith.

I went to a Christian church camp every summer as a kid. We had an open atheist and a couple of Jewish kids come every summer. The atheist in the final year talked about how while he still didn't believe, he absolutely loved the camp and community and that we welcomed everyone unconditionally. He was a cool dude, and the Jewish kids all agreed. Even when we did bible study or similar, no one was forced to participate, it was really nice.

Instead, we apathetically condemned them to an unspeakable fate after deciding that "we don't want those sorts in our country" even kids; 😢 the literal embodiment of innocence. I wasn't alive or was my family even in Canada back then but people condemn the Nazis (as they should) today as if this wasn't somehow worse. Today's immigrants and refugees should not experience similar treatment because we should know better. Mr. Rogers had it right. I strive to be that sort of Christian who actually follows Christ.. I relate to this except I’m from the US and so I have a weird relationship to war intervention. I’m not sure what it was like in Canada but in the US huge celebrities like Frank Sinatra made tons of PSA’s about the war. Prior to us being attacked though most people were very anti war. And in general, the US is condemned for interfering in other countries practices. There is a strange precedent here that I think covers a larger discrimination. People thought our intervention was Ok because it was happening on European soil to European citizens, and according to the world that’s worth saving. But when similar genocides of citizens have happened across the Middle East and/or Africa we, or the west in general, have been strongly condemned for interfering. I think in cases like Iran, intervention was selfish and should be condemned, but in other cases I think it’s necessary but it’s also intervention of other countries freedoms and often religious in nature. So when is it ok to step in? Or should we just be isolationists as a general rule in the west
@kennethhammond40286 ай бұрын
All very good questions, imho, probably ease up on intervention around the world and look after yourselves a little more, high homeless rates, high incarceration, a more financial benevolent health system. Unemployment and under employed corporate practices, and so many more issues. What was spent in the Ukraine for a month spent in other areas would be a signifcant boost, to the US problems.

I've posted this comment in many other threads... Using the Bible as evidence for the existence of Jesus is the equivalent of saying, "Because I said so." There is no COMTEMPORARY documentation corroborating biblical stories. Every extra-biblical document mentioning Jesus was written decades after his alleged death. There just isn't enough evidence to prove Jesus existed, as he's presented in the New Testament

@@vonbass1300 I've read actual books on the subject, thanks anyway. There is no contemporary evidence of Jesus. None, zero, zip. EVERYthing written about him comes decades and centuries after his supposed lifetime. We have the writings of Aristophanes, who wrote his play mocking Socrates. It was written at the exact same time Socrates lived.
@vonbass130014 күн бұрын
@benjalucian1515 All of Pauls letters written between 46 and 60, and all the rest of the NT written in the first century except maybe Revelation. There is no more copied body of work to ever exist. The Socrates play, No copy of the original production survives, and scholarly analysis indicates that the revised version is an incomplete form of Old Comedy. This incompleteness, however, is not obvious in translations and modern performances. ome scholars estimate that there are about 30 surviving independent sources written by 25 authors who attest to Jesus. To establish the existence of a person without any assumptions, one source from one author (either a supporter or opponent) is needed; for Jesus there are at least 12 independent sources from five authors from supporters and 2 independent sources from two authors from non-supporters, within a century of the crucifixion. Since historical sources on other named individuals from first century Galilee were written by either supporters or enemies, these sources on Jesus cannot be dismissed, and the existence of at least 14 sources from at least 7 authors means there is much more evidence available for Jesus than for any other notable person from 1st century Galilee. The letters of Paul are the earliest surviving sources referencing Jesus and Paul documents personally knowing and interacting with eyewitnesses such as Jesus' brother James and some of Jesus closest disciples around 36 CE, within a few years of the crucifixion (30 or 33 CE). Paul was a contemporary of Jesus and throughout his letters, a fairly full outline of the life of Jesus on earth can be found. From just Paul, Josephus, and Tacitus alone, the existence of Jesus along with the general time and place of his activity can be confirmed

Fun fact about circumcision. .. Even IF there were antibiotics back then there is an EXTREMELY high risk of bleeding! Even today it is very risky to do a circumcision after about 6 weeks old. In a newborn the circulation to that area hasn't fully kicked in and so it's a relatively minor procedure The older someone is the more additional circulation kicks in (so that the necessary "ability" to be a father is possible) So especially in an adult a circumcision can cause heavy bleeding. THEN there's still infection to consider back then...

(Re: 16:00, that Christianity didn't recognize the existence of other gods) It's kinda true that Christianity didn't recognize other gods, but there's some asterisks. The biggest is that the Pauline texts that became Christian scripture seem to explicitly refer to those gods existing. (Colossians refers to powers and principalities who are disarmed and humiliated in the crucifixion and resurrection and 1 Corinthians refers to all pagan gods as demonic spirits.)There is a strong sense in Christian thought that many of the gods of various polytheistic systems are more or less identifiable with real spiritual beings somewhere, but that these are virtually always malevolent to human life and will be judged in the end for their rebellion against Jesus. (This theme doesn't seem to come out of nowhere, either. See Psalm 82 for an Old Testament example)
@benjalucian15152 ай бұрын
*1 Corinthians refers to all pagan gods as demonic* This was because early Christians knew they were never going to convince the pagans that they hadn't had religious experiences and miracles from their own gods. So the Christians had to literally demonize them.

One thing people both outside and inside the faith typically do not understand is that "loving thy neighbor" was not Jesus saying its ok to sin and that christians should be ok with it, he still said that gods laws should be followed, and part of that loving of people who are different should be encouraging them to turn away from their sin. So no, christians are not misconstruing Jesus's teachings by being against things like homosexuality, prostitution, abortion etc., they are only wrong if they are hateful towards others in the process. Lets not forget that god supposedly turned two cities into glass for being too evil, that evil being massive amounts of lust and homosexuality. That is the same god christians worship, the same god Jesus says he both is and is and is the son of, he didn't have a change of heart or something between the old and new testament. Not that I believe in any of that of course, this is a big reason I've fallen away from the faith myself. being raised in it however, I find it silly when I hear people try to make jesus out to be this hippy dippy dude that was cool with whatever as long as you weren't mean to each other, its white washing and trying to make chistianity appealing to modern sensibilities, once you get into it you realize it was a trap to get you in a pew, and then they will passively shame you into changing everything about yourself to fit the christian lifestyle

When you follow him with your whole heart and follow his example to the best of your ability the world becomes kinder. I was a staunch Atheist for most of my adult life and was controlled by my baser emotions (ie anger and resentment.) But when I had a realization of how much my hatred for myself was caused by my resentments. I found Jesus at the time I was at my lowest. And I thank him for coming into my life. I’m now a minister and I work to honor his love by giving as much love as I’m blessed to contain. But thru my new found conviction in my faith I’ve found a kinder world. I’ve been blessed to dine at the tables of many Muslims and Jews at different times. And find that my love helps to make them feel seen and protected. I would gladly lay my life down to defend and protect my brothers and sisters. I love everyone in this comment section and thank Simon, (an out spoken agnostic.) for this great video and I hope anyone who is seeking Jesus’ love finds it. ❤
