Man, Duff is cool. He's done it all, burned the house down, rebuilt himself from less than zero and just has a wealth of knowledge. He's a Rock Star but seems like you could just chill with him too. So respect for him. He's like the Ultimate cool uncle LOL. I always LOVE a Duff conversation.

Duff dude youve inspired me in soo many ways, like you’re definitely one of the most positive heros i look up to, would love to play some tunes together sometime. Im 30 and i was buying guitar strings and picks at the local pawn shop one day. He was taking care of someone else so i started looking when i noticed he had some CDs for sale. They werent displayed very prominently, i guess because it was like 2012 lmao! But music is my life, so i started trying to make out what all he had on that lil rack. I bought two CDs that day, Duffs first solo album “Believe in Me” and im guessing either he or maybe whoever sold/pawned those CDs were a Gunner. Had to be because the other one i noticed and decided to buy was Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds, his first solo album as well. I didnt really groove with Izzys stuff, but damnit Duffs album rocked my world, and like opened my mind from the sort of tunnel vision i had on my favorite bands. I URGE anyone whos here, if youre unfamiliar with Believe in Me, you need to order/stream/download it ASAP!! I was soo lost in that period of my life i was 22, i was raised by my grandma and she died in my arms not even a month after I graduated high school. She was both my parents, and the only person who would support me, and show me unconditional love. That really had a negative impact on me, my life soon started spiraling, i was surfing that downward spiral in style atleast. I had been left some money, i heard my favorite band at the time was about to do a residency at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. This was band i always loved growing up, but i had kinda forgotten them. But i happened to see their behind the music the week before she passed on. But i was like woah! I need to get back into guitar and get another band together ASAP because thats what ive been missing past four years. I have always had depression and abandonment issues since before i was 10. So there i was literally homeless, lost, and crushed because i lost the only person i loved and cared about. I started couch surfing, and once a little money started coming down the pike, i decided id enjoy flipping cars, which i did and i bought my dream car at 21. 2002 Firehawk Trans Am LS1 Corvette engine and 6 speed stick, t-tops, tinted windows and a rockin Alpine system i installed all myself. I bought a couple guitars and a bass, and started getting my chops back or trying to. It was all good despite the odds against me, till i started hanging with someone i considered a brother from highschool in my band days. He was a HUGE Guns fan lol, i used to give him soo much shit because i was into 80s Metallica and Pantera, and thats the kinda music i played. I loved Guns as a kid but my mom burnt me out quick on them. So ya know brother went in the Marines and that just mindfucked him on every level, he wouldnt touch his guitar ever again because some of his brothers didnt make it home from the war. He found that he could self medicate his mental issues with heroin. I had been curious of heroin because of so many of my heros, but always turned it down because i wasnt gonna end up a statistic like my mother. But in that era of my life i was getting suicidal, and started getting it in my head that i just needed to put myself in the ground too, because i was alone, and no one was checking on me to see if i was processing my grief, or how i should say. I started running the bars every night, buying half ozs of good coke, snorting pills, and chasing every good looking girl i could find. At the time it seemed like thatd be the best way to fill the emotional hole inside me. Im not gonna lie it was great fun for a long time. Until I remembered i had a vacation in Vegas in a week. So i stocked up on party supplies, and partied my ass off and had to reschedule for the next flight because i showed up an hour late smh. So they were paying extra attention to me, so i decided that i better not try smuggling shit on this specific flight. So as i touch down in Vegas and as i was checking into the Hard Rock Hotel i could hear Mötley Crües show raging on, but i wasnt too concerned i had front row tickets for the final four shows there. By the time I decided what to wear and whether or not to drink the whole pint of Jack Daniels from my mini fridge, i caught the last maybe four songs that first night but the production was insane for that residency, blew my mind! I was like this is right where i belong, im right at home here! I was soo high that withdrawal didnt rear its head into my life until my third morning in Vegas. I thought maybe i was jet lagged, i was naive and didnt think id ever let myself get strung out to the point of waking up sick. So i had the best and at the same time worst time of my life in Vegas. When i was waiting on my flight home which got delayed half the day. I popped in the bookstore in the McCaren airport. I was happy to see they had a very nice Rock section. I happened to buy Duffs first book because I recognized his name from the Mötley Crüe books, and I decided to give Guns another chance and found my new favorite band for years. But Duff inspired me to get clean and really to be a man. Im typing this from my finally own first place. And Duff opened my mind about Prince. He talked in his books how much of a hero and inspiration he was to Duff. Maaan im soo thankful for planting that seed!! See i used to not believe in fate. But think bout my guitar strings story finding his album, then his book. Life has taught usually in hard ways i was wrong about that. Its also taught me things are cyclical. Prince inspired Duff, who inspired me, and turned me onto his inspiration, and last month a kid wrote a small book like im doing now. Telling me that im literally his hero, that my lil guitar videos i do when im bored, have lit a hunger and drive in him, and that just tripped me the hell out, total mindfuck! I saw my first concert when i was six, Kiss reunion tour 96. I knew when the lights went down, the pyro went off/up, they hit the stage with a force to be reckoned with. But i told my mom on the way home that i now know what i want to be when u grew up. Still aint grown up, and still havent given up though i havent picked up my guitar in a couple months since losing my job, then the only girlfriend i actually loved and planned on being with. Trying to keep it together, but with each day it gets harder, and now live music isnt even a thing. Im sort of crestfallen at the moment. Ive overcame sooo much shit, and cheated death more times than i can count on one hand, and for what?! Idk why i even decided to share all my baggage now, but i guess to thank Duff for kinda saving me, teaching me to be a man, introducing great tunes, and reminding me of the one thing i do love and thats music, and the creation of it. Hopefully my trainwreck will maybe help someone else along the way. If i can overcome an 8 year heroin addiction, so can you and im here to encourage anyone struggling!
