In a recent Wretched TV episode, Todd Friel made an argument that pastors are to be men of God and that means...well it means a lot. What is a "man of God?" And is it what Friel says it is. Are pastors supposed to be perfect? Or are they real people like me and you?

I know a Pastor who's a good friend of mine, which I never expected because he's older than me, but he's relatable and friendly and respectful. I sometimes still joke around with him calling him Mr. Dr. Professor Pastor

Pastors are not supposed to fraternize with the little people?!? Didn't Jesus and the apostles stay with little people?!? I can't imagine they would go to someone's house and when they weren't out "ministering", they were cloistered in their rooms praying and the families slid their plates under the door. I bet they prayed but they spent plenty of time talking to the host family and others who might stop by about Scripture, the news, hobbies, etc...

Todd friel did an episode where he talked about how Christian music has negative themes. I swear to you I was listening another day a little ways down the road and he did an episode where he discussed….. how Christian music has too positive vibes . He also was in a video where he tried to describe the music of a band he criticizes often and he had no clue what he was talking about. Then another episode where he was mocking all these songs that used the word fire in them and he again was reaching. Now, this is just one topic and he looked entirely ridiculous each time I hear him discuss it. I imagine his researching efforts don’t typically break into an intellectual sweat.

I would say I grew up in a fairly fundamental church association, but there was a big shift at some point when pastors started to burnout really bad. My father was a pastor, and he constantly fought against these fundamental ideas, he encouraged people to be normal, that the gospel was freeing. He also constantly fought for our independance as PKs, he protected us from people's pressure and expectations. I'm really grateful for this.

@@Underdogtheology the sad part is that a lot of my friends who were PKs really got hurt. My brother was one, our expectations of the church were crushed. I'm still struggling with my own faith. I'm holding fast, trusting God to keep me up. But it took many years to even restart a relationship, even though I was craving it. Fear and trauma kept me from going back. A few of my friends who are technically fundamentalists brought me back. They were still loving and knew my heart for God.

Thank you for demonstrating what being a man of God looks like, brother. I'm a recovering Fundi my self...lol! Three years sober this past January.😅🥰 I no longer walk in the way of the Light, but Im carried by Him. And His words are the song of our God. He's beautiful and He's taught me our Daddy is too. It is so very different living in the strength of His joy!! Not worried about how Im seen, because who cares? I am daughter of the living God! And I live that. How can I do anything else?? Dont get me wrong, as a child, I still throw my fits or do things I know to be wrong, but will my Father beat me for that?? He'd hit His Son first, wouldnt He? Since Jesus is holding me? Those scars on His hands wouldn't mean much, would they? Is Jesus gonna throw me down if i act up? Nope. But I dont get fussy very often any more. Like you said, stop worrying about it just do it! Following the example of Christ. Did Jesus allow Himself to be called "Good"? Nope. He accepted "Teacher" though. Jesus didn't pay taxes. He was a homeless wanderer. He had no wife or children. He had no interest in politics. No higher education. No income. A reputation with the "men of God" as a heretic. A shiftless lay about having the nerve to teach about God. He didn't even own a Bible!! (Cluctch my pearls, Mercy! I'm having an aghastrophy!!) By the standards of many churches Jesus wouldn't be qualified or accepted as a leader today, would He? But His example lives in you and I'm thankful to have seen your heart. My love and prayers to you and yours, brother!

Yeah, I agree with you on this issue. As a former pastor and a former student of Tennessee Temple University, I saw this kind of behavior. Many preacher students in college lived self-consciously to NOT offend others, thereby staining their reputation as future pastors. On the other hand, I came from a Southern Baptist Church, so that sort of thing didn't bother me... much, lol! Now, after leaving the role of assistant pastor and pastor, I discovered something on the other side of the fence that is just as interesting. As an ordained lay minister, I found that if a lay minister wears his "ordained calling" on his sleeve, those around him in the workplace may not be themselves. Why? Because "A preacher is in our presence. I got to watch my Ps and Qs." I learned this by observation. I'm pretty observant. In my past hospital employment of nearly 20 years, you wouldn't have known I was an "ordained preacher." I didn't wear my calling on my sleeve... not because I'm ashamed of Christ or my calling, but because I wanted those around me to just be themselves. I've made a lot of acquaintances and friends that way. Now I would, if the opportunity arose, slip the gospel into a conversation. Including my calling if I thought it would be appropriate.

Honestly brother, I have a lot of respect for you talking about this. Legalism has really plagued the church in many ways. It’s like the passages about liberty in Christ have never been considered. As you mentioned, I think there are things we should stay away from but our conscience should be our compass in making those decisions (and when I say conscience, I mean the Holy Spirit speaking to our conscience). If we are weak in something, we should avoid putting ourselves in a position to be tempted. If a brother is weak in something we should not be a stumbling block to them when spending time with them. But if we have a conviction about something we should not be forcing the entire church to abide by our own conscience and convictions (1 Corinthians 10:29).

I like Todd. I don't like everything Todd says, but that's okay. Sadly, I don't think Todd would like me. The "man of God" concept also makes it hard for normal people to have any confidence sharing the Gospel, leading their family...because a normal person who is real with themselves and God has trouble seeing themselves as a "man of Gawd" like they talk about in their preacher voices.

This type of doctrine regarding pastors is a form of thought control which results in congregants being forbidden to question or criticize their leaders. It’s damaging to leaders and congregants because it recasts accountability as “a critical spirit”, “divisiveness”, etc…. See Steven Hassan’s BITE model of authoritarian control. Great discussion!

To me it is ironic that people like Todd who want the church cleaned up are doubling down on the exact things that cause pastors to fall. Put them on pedestals, isolate them from the community (clergy-laity) of faith with artificial expectations. And be shocked when they act out in private. So Todd, with the royalty-commoner analogy, are you endorsing the spiritual caste system in the church now? Isn’t that the same issue with pop culture celebrity pastors as well as “man of God” pastors? Separation from the average believer, regardless of the nature of the separation. And Todd, what do you think about Jesus? Was He too relatable (John 4, Luke 5:29-32) or not?

In regards to Todd’s comments on royalty. Is he saying that a pastor is supposed to be royalty when compared to the congregation? Where the heck does he get that? If anything, all who are born again are a royal priesthood before God. This idea that a pastor is above his congregation is a very Papal idea to it’s core and they are treating the pastor as if he is the Pope. It’s no wonder why the Roman Catholic Church is the organization that it is. It is in our human nature to crown someone king over the people. Just read 1 Samuel. The people did not want God to be their king, but they wanted a human king over them.
