Just saw Todd for the first time 7/24...out if the hundreds of concerts I have seen, just phenomenal, easily one of my top ten concerts of all time...man have I missed out. His band is great, and he played two on a half hours...very deep, intricate lyrics...did an Irish folk song a capella..with the bass and guitarist singing harmonies...simply stunning...his voice and guitar playing are still phenomenal. I just can't get over how great he really was...my wife was equally impressed.

I was this typical growing middle class humble 15-years old world kid during this classic intricate trending time. And this song marked my love for the Golden Years of the 1970's --- the height of counterculture change for global peace, rock, jazz, folk protest songs, Apple 2e, Visicalc, Yoga and Meditation, higher consciousness book collections, faded jeans, concerts and great jamming parties. Life adventures then were altogether then so easy. Henceforth, the golden year. (please click photo image to play this wonderful KZbin video music) .

It has another Todd Rundgren song "A Dream Goes on Forever" Other songs on the soundtrack : "The Air That I Breathe" by the Hollies "Magic Man" & "Crazy on You" by Heart "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" by Al Green "Strange Magic" (ELO) Electric Light Orchestra "Come Sail Away" by Styx "Alone Again (Naturally)" by Gilbert O'Sullivan "So Far Away" - Carole King "Run to Me" - The Bee Gees

Todd grew up in Philly along with Daryl Hall. They had a kinship. Todd had a Philly Soul sensibility but didn't want to be pigeonholed in a certain style...the male Carole King. So he branched out into a space-rock style with Utopia in the first couple years of their thing. He trimmed the band down to a four-piece by 1976...but they had a niche audience.

HUGE rabbit hole if you choose to enter...and i hope you do. Todd is a GENIUS musician, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, singer, producer. this is one of the few big hits he had, but there's a TON of great innovative music he has put out...and still does....covering SO many genre's. one of the reasons he was never huge was, rather than following this album with the same ckind of album, he went TOTALLY in another (very strange...and awesome) direction...much to the chagrin of the rocord company. his thoughts were, he had a great income from producing...didn't NEED to just pump out hits.... please more todd!!

Oh, this rabbit hole can keep you occupied for YEARS. (Yes hello Todd is my all-time favorite I have Opinions. XD) "I saw the Light" and "Can We Still Be Friends" round out his other big pop-ish hits, and you've probably heard "Bang the Drum All Day" at a sportsball event at some point. Beyond that, I will *attempt* to keep this short, but he's been recording for over 50 years and shows no signs of slowing down, so no promises: Baby Let's Swing/The Last Thing You Said/Don't Tie My Hands (Picking one is impossible, but if I have to pick one, it is this one, but picking one is impossible.) Broke Down and Busted We Gotta Get You a Woman Just One Victory Couldn't I Just Tell You (another one with a fun studio outtake at the beginning!) Song of the Viking All the Children Sing Determination Real Man Can't Stop Running Parallel Lines The Waiting Game Hawking The Want of a Nail Change Myself Who's Sorry Now Second Wind I Hate My Frickin' ISP Side jog over to his band Utopia for some other good stuff, most notably "Love Is the Answer." In addition to putting out a ridiculous amount of music, Todd's produced a number of albums (Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell, Stagefright by the Band... whichever Grand Funk Railroad album has "We're an American Band" on it... I think more than one Hall & Oates...). *And* odds are good he's playing most to all of the instruments on any given track. He keeps busy.

Not on this song. It is on side 4 of Something/Anything, which features songs that were recorded live (in the studio), with session players, in NY. Here is the lineup for this song: Todd Rundgren - lead vocals, piano Mark Klingman - organ Robbie Kogale - guitar Stu Woods - bass John Siomos - drums Randy Brecker - trumpet Michael Brecker - tenor sax Barry Rogers - trombone Hope Ruff, Richard Corey, Vicki Robinson, Dennis Cooley, Cecilia Norfleet - backing vocals Rundgren said it was rehearsed and recorded in less than two hours.

If you can get your hands on the liner notes to Something /Anything, it tells the story of what's happening in the studio the day they recorded side 4. It explains all you heard counting in the song, and why. It's funny as hell to read along as you listen to side 4, and makes sense of all you hear on the album.

I Love Your Todd Rundgreb reaction! And Your Love of the Hammond B3 ... Wow, what an instrument, handled the right way it sounds as if it was connected to some heavenly sphere! Anyway, You asked for more Tpdd songs: A very powerful pop song is his "Couldn't I Just Tell You?" from his first album "Something - Anything?", a doouble album where Todd plays all the instruments on three of the four album sides. I saw Todd in 1976 with his band "Utopia" i Stockholm, Sweden - my hometown. I was blown away by the groups musicianship and lively antics on stage. And as I was reporting the show for my local newspaper I also shot both black and white and color pics. Very cherished images today 45 years later. So, happy listening to Todd Rundgren - he is truly one of the Great composers - although somewhat undervalued and a little forgotten.

Thanks for this thoughtful detailed review. The first three sides of this album (Something / Anything) Todd played all the instruments and performed all the vocals. There are couple of power pop type songs (I Saw the Light and Couldn’t I Just Tell You) that are on those first three sides. The fourth side of this album was recorded in the studio with a group of musicians, many recruited right before the recording. Hello It’s Me was on the fourth side of the album.

Something / Anything was one of the first albums I bought with my babysitting money as a young teen when this song made it on radio. You could play it all the way through, front & back, not a bad song on it! That was back in the day when you just can't pick songs at random, what a missed opportunity for artists now, IMO. Find his double album set titled: "Something/Anything" , and pick any song on the collection. You won't be sorry. Todd is a genius who pioneered electronic music with his early synthesizer use. He also plays multiple instruments, writes lyrics composes, and arranges his own music. But oddly, his audience was never as big as his genius deserves.

Great to hear your reaction to Todd's "pop" side of music!! There are many more to enjoy in Todd's more popular repertoire. However, there is Todd's other very "progressive" side with his band Utopia! From his first Utopia album, listen to the intro song "Utopia" which sets the stage for what is to come. Then listen to "The Ikon", which is the entire side 2 of the album. So much of early progressive rock's origin came from the UK. This progressive rock came from an American artist, before anyone here called it progressive. That introduction will hopefully send you on a journey into Todd's Utopia and solo progressive music.(Check his album "Initiation"). Trust me. You will not be disappointed!! Looking forward to seeing your reaction!!

Oh yes! The (extended version?) (Original version?). Whatever it is, my personal favorite. Now, a little background behind this song: Todd was digging this was one girl. I believe her name was Linda. But her father wasn't digging Todd's presentation, particularly his long hair. So he put an end to their freindship. So she had to break it off with him. Hurt, Todd still had her deep in his blood stream. So when he wrote this song, he wrote it as if he imagined her, breaking it off in such a way, that still "left the door open" between them, should they meet again later in the future. In this song- it's her telling him to keep her in his mind.
