This video is part of our series commemorating the 160th Anniversary of The Overland Campaign. You can view the full series here: • The Overland Campaign ...
As the Union and Confederate Armies moved South from The Wilderness to Spotsylvania Court House, they briefly clashed at Todd's Tavern, fighting for control of the Brock Road (again). 83 years earlier on the same ground, the Marquis de Lafayette camped with 3,000 Continental soldiers on their way to Virginia to being the Revolutionary War to a close.
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

Excellent, also fun. Special kudos to Dan Davis for his Revolutionary War perspective, also for reminding us that Sheridan was probably the biggest humbug of the war.

Many kudos to Andy for his camera work, and to the whole crew for pronouncing Catharpin correctly! Didn’t realize there was so much Revolutionary War history also connected to the site, but the entire Central Virginia area was strategic in both wars.

Glad this site has been saved! Thanks for the info about the action around the tavern. Used to pass by this area a lot when I was a kid.

"The original Todddddds Tavern" Garry's been hanging around Tim Smith Again. In all seriousness, I love these videos. I've never studied the Overland Campaign beyond the major actions. The 1864 Army of the Potomac bore so little resemblance to the 1863 Army of the Potomac, it's sometime difficult to remember this was just 10 months after Gettysburg.

Finished rereading Sheridan’s biography. He commanded a cavalry regiment and later a brigade in Mississippi before commanding an infantry division

I really have to get down there, haven't been to this site yet. I really wish the Tavern was still there though. :( Great job again everyone, but you did not answer the main question I had when I was going to watch this video. Who was Todd? :) No seriously, I want to know! :)

@@AmericanBattlefieldTrust Awesome, thx guys! So Todd was the last name, not the first. I just thought it was some guy named Todd lol Saw that the Tavern was already in disrepair at the time of the battle, so no surprise it didn't survive the years. Would have been cool if it did though :(
